So there we have it – Umpire Ross Emerson now admits he called Murali because a high ranking Australian cricket official told Emerson he would be supported if he called the champion spinner, but Emerson claims he was badly let down. Therefore, one can only conclude, ipso facto, that Emerson went into the game with the pre-conceived notion, that come hell or highwater, he was going to call Murali even if he bowled leg breaks! ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ On that topic It’s appropriate to recall here what Ritchie Richardson the West Indian captain who was at the wicket at the Gabba said at the press conference following the ODI against Sri Lanka during which Murali was called by Emerson.” How do you chuck a leg break maarn – it will end up at cover point” ! Richardson remarked rather sarcastically.

If you might recall, when Emerson first called Murali in this match, Aravinda de Silva Sri Lanka’s stand in skipper went up to Murali and told him to send down leg breaks instead of his wrist spinning off breaks, which led to Richardson’s cutting observation. Incidentally, when Murali was subsequently called again by Emerson in Adelaide, he was supposed to have been on sick leave from his public service job in Western Australia and was obviously found out and thankfully faded into obscurity. However, judging by his recent inane pronouncements, he still seems to be unwell. He probably continues to see Murali staring at him! but I sincerely hope he rids himself of that malady with Murali’s retirement. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

All this of course is now water under the bridge as the cricketing world laments the departure from this great game of a unique bowler who Harsha Bogle the erudite Indian commentator described as a “collectors ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ item, because they only made one of his kind”.

Happy retirement Muthiah Muralidaran and thanks for the wonderful memories. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ “ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
