Ranil says, “Protest outside UN office brought shame to the country”!
Posted on July 9th, 2010

Dr.P.A.Samaraweera, Australia

The Opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has said, “…The protest outside the UN office had brought shame to the country – Civil society does not approve such actions…”
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Ranil mentioned this referring to Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s protest march and fast unto death in front of the UN office. On the same day an English Daily displayed photographs of two protest marches. One led by Ranil with about 15 people and the other by WimalƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ with more than 500 people.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
The photo with Ranil showed him with his cronies posing on the steps of the Parliament eachƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ holding a paper with both hands. Ranil and a few were in the western attire andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the photo appeared as if some ‘oldies’ were singing Christmas carols!
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
The other showed a vibrant and a lively group led by Wimal waving the Sri Lankan flag marching with courage and vigour towards the UN office. Almost everyone had a flag showing their national feeling for those who salvaged the country from terrorism and against whom the UN had alleged war crimes.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
In contrast to this Ranil’s group was protesting against the President who freed the country from terrorism.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Ranil’s stance is not a surprise because during the war he ridiculed the army to get the support of pro-LTTE voters. And then after the war, went behind Sarath Fonseka hoping he would win the elections and become President so that he could take over from him.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
People like Ranil, coming from the so called elite families of Colombo with Christian background have no feelings for the country or for those who fought for the country. It is Ranil and his henchmen who should be ashamed that they had not condemned the UNSG for appointingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  a UN Panel to investigate alleged war crimes.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Instead of condemning the UNSG , on the 7 of July, Ranil in a speech in theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ParliamentƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ defended Ban KI-Moon for appointing the UN Panel,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ displaying his anti-national feelings and showing support for the “Bullies” who have lined up with terror backers!

What else is new???? RanilW’s position on any foreign affairs matter affecting Sri Lanka has been WITH the neo-colonials who have now revealed their hand by officially backing Ban-Ki-Moon on this particular issue. It will add another nail to the UNP coffin unfortunately. If Ranil were interested in his party and in Sri Lanka he would have attempted to give some decent advice to the Govt., and probably even assisted in resolving the matter, instead of revelling in this unnecessarily.

  2. A. Sooriarachi Says:

Ranil only sees the imagined faults of SriLankan Govt, the SL armed forces and the Sinhala Buddhists. He never condemned or even criticise the LTTE terrorists or those Foreign Forces and NGO’s that acted against the interest of SriLanka. UNP had been a great party launched by the Late Baron Jayatileka and DS Senanayake, with a large voter base, and it is imperative someone within the UNP find a way to change its dictatorial constitution and rescue the party from one man rule of Ranil as he and his close associates have paralyse the UNP and made it a tool of the enemies of the nation. Once the UNP and the opposition cooperate with the Govt to support the interests of the nation, no foreign force will find it easy to undermine SriLanka’s economic and social progress.

This was posted at Adaderana, a good insight into what this group of scum are up to:

“”First our Srilankan cattles must know what this panel about, it is not a panel to charge anybody only to investigate the truth about both sides but MR-Clan is afraid the investigation will lead to LTTE money & assets where they have swindled, robbed, some shared with KP giving him perks & security. The clown acted to safeguard his masters but failed miserably

    M.H.Sheriff”

Just shows what a bunch of selfish short sighted power greedy and politically jealous losers these people are.

They support having our soldiers taken away for bogus “war crimes” and the nations image destroyed (regardless of the consequences to the people) just to settle their political dreams, vendettas and power grabbing agendas.

So desperate for power they can only do it this way -by begging their white masters. These people will do anything for power be it an LTTE victory, our own Army defeated, our soldiers tried in their masters kangaroo courts, economic sanctions and hardships for the people going all the way to the disintegration of the state itself just to get power.

They know the people hate them so the only way they can come to power is by working with their masters to bring economic sanctions and misery onto the people (which they REVEL in as they hate the masses anyway) in the hopes of toppling the current popular Government with the masses blaming the Government for the hardships they create and thus ride into power that way. They think they are being really “smart” but the reality is the people have seen through this conwork and hate them even more for it.

They behaved this exact same way during the war, colluding with Tamil violence and their white masters to assist the LTTE (using the economic weapon) to facilitate LTTE victories to “prove” that the LTTE cannot be defeated (as they so foolishly believed and followed on their white masters dictates).

They also wanted to stop the “political credit” Rajapakse would get from winning the war, this political jealousy is also another driving force. In the end the very thing they tried to prevent happened as the people realised the difficult situation Rajapakse was already in was being made even worse through the lies and defamation (including: “lack of free media”, no “freedom” “human rights) the opposition was actively engaging in disseminating on their white masters requests. The people appreciated the manner in which the Rajapakse navigated through all these obstacles the Opposition in particular created and are grateful for the manner in which he fought hard for the country’s unity and the success of the Army. His love for the nation was obvious and the people loved him even more for it. When all hopes of an LTTE “bringing down” Rajapakse (this included through assassination) became less and less possible they resorted to trying to haul our leaders, Army and in essence the people to the kangaroo courts of their white masters to be “punished” (again in accordance with the orders of their white masters).

It should be noted the GSP+, the US GSP plus “labour review” and then Moons panel all coincided at the same time, as did the sudden energising of the Opposition and their moronic foul mouth supporters who had been demoralised and depressed all this time. These people get excited and activated when the country has some kind of misery brought on it by their white masters.

They are all sick scum and a curse on our nation. These white worshipping slaves and Colombians are after all the descendents of the very same people who sold our nation out to European savagery in exchange for a few scraps falling from their masters plate. Treachery and white worshipping is in their blood now.

  4. Siri Says:

Ranil is a self centered fool and should be chased out of politics. He has been running to India and the West every time he had a problem, seeking their advice. He is still in the mode of a subserviant sevant to the Western masters like in the Colonial days. People like him sold the country to get personal benefits from the foreign rulers, and even today we have a group of people among our citizens who ape the West and will do anything to pick up the crumbs under the Western Master’s dinner table. The people of his kind and the LTTE supporters voted for the Traitor Sarath Fonseka. These so called UNP supporters are known as the Colombians who think they are better than the average Sri lankan citizen. They voted for Fonseka because they could not bear to have a common man from the masses such as Mahinda Rajapaksa as the President. Unfortunately I also belonged to this group and now am ashamed of it. I have been living in the USA for the past 30 years as a citizen and see the World in it’s true colors. We should be proud to have a great President like Mahinda Rajapaksa. He has saved the nation from the LTTE and is going on in the right direction to develop the country. The Western Powers do not like this change in Sri Lanka and are trying their best to change ithe regime and put Ranil back in power so that they will have a puppet regime in Sri Lanka also. The country needs a strong opposition for the democratic process to progress in Sri lanka, but Ranil is not the man to do it. It is high time that the decent and patriotic people in the UNP threw out Ranil and replced him with a man from the masses like Sagith Premadasa (I am expecting him to be like his famous father President Ranasinghe Premadasa). Mahinda is doing a great job, but a man like Sagith will make the opposition strong and be able to keep a watchful eye on the government when they do something improper, and help them when they do something for the good of the country. Ranil is a fool who wants to object to everything as he knows nothing better. Unfortunately the Colombians treated Ranasinghe Premadasa the same way as Mahinda. Premadasa did not have any family members in the parliment to support him and was unable to do more for the country. Mahinda is lucky to have many family members in important positions to help him to do the job expected from him by the masses. He has no excuse not to deliver the goods, so let us all join hands and help him to get the job done soon.

  5. Kit Athul Says:

Who will stop Ranil from apologizing for the civilians lost in the last phase of the war, in the parliament? Siri, lets leave Pramadase’s son for a minute. Your calling Pramadase a famous person? I will call him infamous. Why one might ask? Pramadase gave military equipment to Prabhakeran (earned big money from it) when Ranjan Wijayaratne, then defence secretary, was in Pakistan to buy military equipment for the army to fight Prabhakeran! Prabhakeran used the equipment provided by Pramadase for the massacre of civilians and Buddhist monks at KITHULTUDUWA and ARNTHALAWE. Sorry, you know very little about Pramadase. Now, about his son, Sagith. Did you read in the news about turmoil inside UNP and what connections he has to the underworld? About this muslim who funds his election? He still has connections to his father’s killer gangs. Its time one select a decent honest person to the leadership of UNP!

  6. samaraweera Says:

I agree with my friend Kit Athul. And I enjoy reading his comments coming from Darwin, NT. A great patriot fighting for the cause of Sri Lanka. Muni keep on with your good work for Sri Lanka. Samaraweera,

  7. cassandra Says:

Ranil Wickremasinghe (RW) is a much maligned man. Arguably, some of the criticism levelled at him – such as the charges that he has not been an effective leader of the UNP or of the Opposition – is at least partially valid but that does not mean that every statement he makes is without merit. We may not like the man but what he is saying can be the uncomfortable truth. RW may have been overstating the position somewhat if he said, as quoted by you, that “the protest outside the UN office had brought shame to the country”. But you cannot quarrel with the substance of his statement. The protest may not have necessarily brought shame on Sri Lanka but it clearly did not bring her much credit. If it was simply a peaceful protest it will have been different. The fact is it turned ugly and there was at least at some point a situation where the personnel working for the UN were subject to harassment. There is hardly anyone in the country who believes that the panel appointed by the UN Secretary General is warranted. But that is a matter that needs to be dealt with via normal diplomatic channels. Quiet diplomacy rather than strident street protests is the way to go to resolve such matters. And it was unfortunate – to say the least – that a cabinet minister should have led the protest and go on to stage a ‘fast unto death’. That fast ended in predictable fashion, with the man with the professed intention of ‘fasting to death’ calling it off, presumably to come back and fast another day. The fast unto death as a weapon of political protest has been much used – and more appropriately, much abused – especially in India, and particularly in South India, to such an extent that the rest of the world has come to look upon it more as a farce – a veritable joke. When you have the likes of Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha calling off their fasts after a few hours as they did during the closing stages of the war against the LTTE, you can understand why. The rest of the world will not have looked on Wimal Weerawansa’s fast any more favourably.

I cannot accept your statement that “people like Ranil, coming from the so called elite families of Colombo with Christian background have no feelings for the country or for those who fought for the country”. Patriotism is not the monopoly of those from families outside Colombo or a non-Christian background. You may wish to reflect on the fact that many of the leaders who fought for independence from Britain did in fact come from Colombo families and some of them had Christian backgrounds. There seems to be a mistaken belief that to be truly patriotic you have to be from outside Colombo and be non Christian.

I have no doubt that RW is as patriotic as the next man. His politics may be different from Mahinda Rajapakse’s but that does not make RW any less a Sri Lankan. And as for having “no feelings for those who fought for the country” it is good to remember that it was during the time that RW was PM that the government declined to sign the Rome Statute on the International Criminal Court, and it is because the government did not sign it that Sri Lankan service personnel cannot be forced to appear before the ICC. Declining to sign the Statute, and so protecting the country’s service personnel from prosecution before the ICC, was surely not the action of a man who had “no feelings for those who fought for the country”.

  8. Raju Says:

Haha Caassendra, coming to defend fellow carriers of the faith like a god boy, but no need to lie.

“The fact is it turned ugly and there was at least at some point a situation where the personnel working for the UN were subject to harassment.”

    That did not even happen.

Nothing happened to the staff. They were only forced to stay in the building, incidentally until 5 o’clock which is the normal closing time. Besides what work do they do exactly? They spent more time lying and defaming the country while the rest of the time they have luxury lives at Sri Lanka’s expense.

Of course for someone like you anyone with some connections to your white master is naturally more “holy” than those that do not.

The protests were peaceful (it had already been portrayed as violent by your masters media), until the police beat up several protestors and tried to clear out the whole lot. This is where it was stopped. The entrance was cleared but the Police we told to stop when they tried to act like big shots and get rid of all the protestors which is denying them their rights.

What we see is a mountain being made on purpose through usual lies and manipulation of the West.

Moon and the West are deliberately being ignorant to the fact that Wimal and the protests represents the views of the thumping majority of people in this country, but unsurprisingly Moon and his gang are trying to falsely portray the protests as an “isolated event” projecting himself and the West as some holy force fighting for the masses rights when they knowingly are actively trampling the masses rights and sentiments with lies and deceit as a mask. The attitude of the UN is simply unbelievable and unacceptable. What a ridiculous situation where these people think they can boss Sri Lanka around? They are absolute trash hated and spat on by nearly every country in the world, including the West who use the UN like a worthless tool as and when it suits them then tosses it out when it “gets in the way” or serves no purpose for the Wests agendas and geopolitical/economic hegemony.

And gee guess you cannot protest against UN huh? Whats the problem if Wimal protests? Did he hurt anyone? Did he do something illegal? Is that not his democratic right? Why is Moon so upset? Do the “freedom champions” (including the NGOs within and out of Sri Lanka who make a lot of noise about “freedom”) not recognise the right of protest? Nor the right of expression? Are they trying to deny freedom of expression to those who disagree with them? Is protesting NOT allowed against the West and their lackey the UN? What happened to all the “freedom” talk that comes from these peoples mouths non-stop?

  9. Raju Says:

Now I shall ask again what “vital work” does the UN do in SL that is so important? Going to clubs and bars, spending millions? Visiting nightclubs, shuttling around in the latest Wifi installed SUVs running over pedestrians and crushing other vehicles while living out of 5 star hotels, engaging in paedophilia -all paid for and done in the name of “humanitarian aid”. These people should be imprisoned. These people need to be arrested and tried for crimes against humanity and exploiting people of the third world. Anyway they seem pretty upset, guess there is no freedom of expression or right of protest against the “human rights” and “freedom” champions. ROFL. Good riddance.

The money channelled to the UN is spent on primarily the foreign (Western origin) staffs “expenses” as mentioned above. They do very little work themselves (its too hot to spend hours outside doing any “work” -a frequent complainant). Usually they simply get some local lackey who they pay a pittance to file reports and “do work” which they then edit and put their signature on LOL. If the local staff member is well behaved” he/she gets a few extras.

Most of the projects that are designed and funded are extremely corrupt and achieve little than stated to be or cash provided for and this “move” will primarily affect Tamils fresh out of the war zone more than anyone else (shows the “humanitarianism” of the UN huh?).

Lets not forget how these people, the UN and the humanitarians earned “a little extra” during the good ‘ole days with uncle Praba around who along with other Western funded NGOs built the LTTEs military infrastructure provided huge amounts of resources (including building and construction materials, heavy lifters, radar, maritime equipment, missile launchers, the LTTEs planes, going to the extent of submarine warfare equipment) and logistical support (UN/NGO vehicles including ambulances to transport LTTE cadres and suicide bombers) all to strengthen the LTTEs capabilities –all done in the name of “humanitarian aid”, “tsunami assistance” and “helping the people” of course (these illegal and immoral activities never went unnoticed; it was done with the tacit support and “approval” -i.e. orders- of their primary benefactors –Western Governments.).

So all in all it is understandable there are many “humanitarians” and NGOs that are upset with the conflict being over. The end of Sri Lankas conflict means these people no longer have a tool to exploit and get rich on nor reasons to justify their stay and luxury life that they have become accustomed to.

    Cassandra

“I have no doubt that RW is as patriotic as the next man”

    Ranil “patriotic”?

    Haha.

Just like Moon’s panel is completely legal and Western countries care deeplt about human rights?

But please tell my why this patriot

    A) Goes around defaming the country

    B) Calls for economic sanctions during and after the war

    C) Sold the country out to the LTTE in 2002

    D) Continues to sell the country out

    E) Wants our own Army defeated and destroyed

    F) Goes defaming our Army and nation

    G) Tries to bring misery to the people and nation through his lies and defamation to create hardships for the people to thus ride into power on those hardships (what perverse thinking).

    H) Wants our Army tried in the kangaroo courts of his (and Cassandras) masters when the option of the LTTE killing them became less and less likely.

    I) Continually tired to overthrow this Government, particular getting into “high gear” in 2007, his attempts running proportionally to Army success

The list is endless, but that is just from the top of my head what this “great patriot” has done.

You should do your own comedy sketch Cassandra.

  11. cassandra Says:

    Raju,

You have paid me the wholly unexpected compliment of three responses; let me thank you for that.

I have read all three with great interest. As for the wastefulness of the UN, I have no quarrel with you. Nor do I question Wimal Weerawansa’s right to carry out his protest and his fast. But Dr S’s article is NOT about these things; it is about Ranil’s statement that the protest had brought shame to the country. I respect your right to your views but going by reports in the foreign media and indeed at home, the protest has not been seen in favourable light. And the protest has certainly not been helpful to the government in its current difficulties with the UN Secretary General.

As for doing my own comedy sketch, I am reminded that it has been said that the essence of humour consists in the clever indulgence in irrelevancies. It seems to me, on that basis, that there are others who are clearly better qualified for that role.
