‘Mr Sarath Fonseka’ – Downfall of a General
Posted on August 14th, 2010
Dr.P.A.Samaraweera, Australia
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ On the 13th of August, the First Court Martial against Gen. Sarath Fonseka found him guilty of dabbling in politics while in uniform. He has been stripped of all ranks, medals and honours won during his career. This includes all perks and privileges. He was Sri Lanka’s first 4 Star General but due to his misguidance as to who his true friends are he got into hot waters and now discharged disgracefully.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
During the court martial it had transpired that he had put pressure on the then Opposition MP Johnston Fernando and MP Lakshman Seneviratne to pave the way for him to join the UNP and contest the Presidential elections.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
At the time, the UNP and the JVP as now, was in disarray and had no proper leader to contest the Presidential elections. So they made SF a cat’s paw. Having tasted power and being an ambitious man he was like a duck to water. The very people with whom he joined hands with, had ridiculed him as the army commander and the armed forces when the war was at its height. They treated the war as invincibleƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and joined hands with terror backers.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
SF quickly forgot that the President and the Defence Secretary had given all the help to be where he was in the army. If not for them, he would have never becomeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the Army Commander. HeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ had already packed his bags when the President gave him an extension and made him Commander.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The President had also helped his two daughters to go to the US for studies. But he bit the hand that fed him.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
It had also come to light that not only he had been disloyal but also corrupt. There is another Court Martial with regard to tender procedures in procurement of arms. He had made illegalƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ tenders toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ hisƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ son-in-law , who is now absconding from the court case.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He has also a Supreme Court case with regard to a statement he made about the concluding stages of the war. He had made a statementƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ to a News Paper with regard to war crimes and ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ condemning the army in which he was the Commander.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
So like ‘Humpty Dumpty, Sarath Fonseka too had a great fall’.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

Dear Priyan
I just can not understand what you have written. The issue here is about the revoke of SFs commission. Lets know how do you justify the verdict. Based on your reply we could start a healthy discussion. By the way were you the site engineer worked at Trans Asia hotel way back in eighties? Regards.

The general, needs no titles, stars and stripes. He need only bare his body to the public gaze. What one sees on it is infinitely more meritorious than the tags and labels that could be pasted and removed by the giver; gruesome slashes, cuts, deep incisions and stitches standing out like patch work. They tell the story of a life long combat officer who always stood in the thick and the din of enemy fire at its worst. He did not desert ranks and run away to the safety and security of the USA, and return after twenty years to bask in the glory of a brother become President. And now, puppy dogs are howling at the full moon and the crows are cawing at the eagle that scaled the heights beyond their reach, into history.
You may place doctorate tags on the scum of the earth, they do not change their nature. So too you may strip this conqueror of the LTTE of his title, decorations and crumbs that fall from the Rajapakse table, but you cannot change his nature. The nation knows, the nation will always gratefully remember.

This is a strightforward decision. We all know what he did in Washington Buddhist Vihara. SF the infantryman was a hero but SF the politician is a dirty traitor and a liar. The politician SF killed the infantryman SF after the war. SF was so strong that only he could kill himself. Sadly he did it. First the UPFA rejected him. Then the people rejecrted him with the biggest ever DEFEAT in January 2010. Then the UNP deserted him. Then the TNA and SLMC deserted him. Now the JVP is also deserting him. But this verdict is only the tip of the iceberg. His other allegations must be investigated and appropriate punishment must be levied.

Mr. Mario Perera seems to have woken up from a deep sleep like Rip Van Winckle. Where have you been during the time the war was at it’s height? Probably licking the feet of the Western masters like SF. You should not throw stones at others when you live in a glass house yourself. You and the Nation should thank the Rajapaksa brothers for ridding the country of the LTTE menace instead of making sly comments about people who came back to their country in it’s time of need. I believe you must have been touring the Western World having fun while our poor soldiers died to save the country. Please Sir, do not insult the people who saved the Nation. If you really are capable of undestanding the law and the legal system in Sri Lanka, you would not comment on the decision of the Judges. It almost amounts to contempt of court. Please sit back and rethink what you have written.

Everyone has their own openions and we do not have to agree with one another, but I have to strongly disagree with Mr. Mario Perera. Once one betray their own mother land does it matter what good they had done for the country? SF had been badly misled by the people who destroyed the country during a black era (JVP) who destroyed transformers, buses, school building and many more public properties and killed many lives of innocent armed forces personals and their families. How come Mr. Perera does not want to accept the fact that if there was no Gotabhaya and president Mahinda there would not be a SF. He did not win the war by himself. There were Navy and the air force involved too. Why don’t you talk about the commanders of those 2 forces too if you wanted to make SF a hero. He was a hero until he became a politician and started talking rubbish and started destroying the image of our Mother land. I know in your mind Mr. Perera that you know the truth, but since you are against Rajapakshas you will never let the truth to come out of your mouth.
