The UNP, ‘the Sunday Leader’ and ‘the Sirasa’

This article is about why ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”the Sunday LeaderƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”the SirasaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ want RanilW out of the leadership of the UNP.The mission of the Western governments for the last 550 years has been to spread Judea Christian values in this country. In their reportings, both ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”the Sunday LeaderƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”the SirasaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ follow this cardinal principal though they pretend to be national and unbiased. The Leader address Colombo wallahs and defend the interests of western governments. And Sirasa inculcate similar thinking to the mindset of the village lad. The only different between these two is that ‘the Leader’ does it in a straight forward manner, whereas ‘the Sirasa’ does it in a rather sneaky way. But their goal is the same; that is to change the prevailing culture of this country.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Since its inception, UNP had been a balanced party in every sense. With the brake-up of the UNP in 1952 however, though its Sinhala vote base declined it remain a force to recon. With the introduction of JRJƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s constitution in 1977, minority vote had become the deciding factor to form governments. Westerners loved the new scenario for they became sponsors and thereby puppeteers of racially based extremist parties that had become king makers. That is one of the reasons for LTTE to survive for thirty years. Westerners thought their game could go on until Eelam is established and their military bases were put in place. They thought no party would ever garner two third majorities to change the situation.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ With RanilW becoming the leader of UNP; the NGOs, owners of Sirasa and the leader, pallikaraya, sallikaraya and kollukaraya had become the rudder of the party. Only when UNP reached power in 2001, the true character of the new party had come to light: RanilW invited the Portuguese to come and celebrate 500 years of their piretical ancestors washing up to our shores. Evangelists started to rent houses in Buddhist neihbourhoods called them churches and started singing noicy plasms on sundays. Colombo was festooned and lit for Christmass as was never before. And the vast majority of Sinhala villagers had become mere spectators of the awful spectre that loomed over the country. They couldnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t do anything to stop them. In the end, they were forced to seek the solace of Soma thero. So, began Sinhala Buddhists abandoning the UNP.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ When the RanilWƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s administration was kicked out by ChandrikaK, no noicy blasts by all that media organs were enough to put the UNP back in the saddle. And RanilW had to be content as the leader of the opposition ever since. For some good fortune of Sri Lanka, Sinhala Buddhists majority by far have flocked together to elect Mahinda Rajapakse to power and he grasped the art of how to keep things that way.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Few months back, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”the Sunday LeaderƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”the SirasaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ had unleashed a crusade to rid RanilW from the leadership of the UNP. It is obvious that they wanted RanilW out but current policies of the UNP to remain. Backers of these two media organs seemed to think that the change of leadership would put UNP back in the saddle.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”The Sunday LeaderƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”the SirasaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and their backers have come up with new formulas and new math. They say, only a minority voted for President Rajapakse. They argue and disseminate that the majority that didn’t vote Rajapakse but would vote with the UNP if only RanilW is dropped.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ If they think they can fool Sinhala Buddhist villagers of this country by merely putting up a new leader to the front they are sadly mistaken. They should know that the vast majority of Sinhala Buddhists are no fools. They have seen what NGOs, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”the leaderƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”the SirasaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢, sallikaraya, pallikaraya, kollukaraya had said and done as the war reached its end. They know with whom this clique does stand even right now.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The cliques that control UNP right now are NGO dollar sharks backed by the Western Governments, Christian Evangelists backed by the Ecumenical Church, and the Federalists backed by the separatists. These people are all firmly entrenched in the party machinery in different guise. They are everywhere and at all levels of the party. They are like an octopus with thousands of tentacles.

Good old UNPers appear to be sick and tired of this game. They are forced to leave the party or are silenced at the central committee. It is NGOkaraya, sallikaraya, pallikaraya, kollukaraya thatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ll call the shots for now. They are the United National Party for now. That is why; Ranil could hang on to the leadership against all the odds all this time.

Those people will formulate and and guide the policies of UNP party not just for now but for a foreseeable future as well. Therefore, even if Sajith Premadasa becomes the leader of UNP, thing will remain as it is in the UNP. It is doubtful Premadasa can ever change the current trait of the UNP. UNP will remain a Menshevik party.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
