Ranjit WickremeratneƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

We love our religion, and our country is blessed by Lord Buddha who have been to my beloved country three times. We respect Buddhism as the majority of our people worship and live according to the buddhist teachings. Buddhist priests are the deciples of Lord Buddha andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  teachers who show us the path of rightiousness. You should preach what Lord Buddha asked you to preach not politics. We are confused because of yourƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ behavior. We bend like David Beckham and worship you when we see you anywhere on the road,Temple or in the house when you visit for Dane or Pirith etc. We kissed your feet and wash your feet because you were the deciples of Lord Buddha and the religion we respect most. We come to the temple to listen to your sermons and we do all kinds of spiritual things to our religion because we trust and respect and it helps us to live a good life. We want you to be neutral and teach good things according to the Buddhist teachings and our Government specially the President of my beloved country wants you to show the way for a just society. He needs your help and advise. Those ancient days too our kings and Queens took your spiritual advise and ruled the country in a rightiousness way. Our Buddhist culture makes us feel spiritual and it teaches us to be good human beings. Eighty percent of our population is Buddhist and were living with other religious minorities with harmony and in peace for centuries. Dont make us angry and insult you because of your behaviour andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ attitude. We like you to be our beacon of light in our society and be example to others. Respect your teacher and founder of Buddhism and follow his teachings and show us the right path we should take to be goodƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ human beings in our lives instead of following politicians and dirty politics in our country.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
After a bloody war of thirty years we just got our freedom and Peace in our country. Because of the divided nation we still cannot enjoy our happiness fully.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Thanks to our war heros and the Government who stood tall against all odds within and outside to crush the most ruthless enemy of our history. While Sadus were massacred in cold blood our war weary brave lads in the Forces fought gallantly against the evil forces of Velupillai Prabakaran. What you, the deciples of Lord Buddha did during those dark days can you tell me please? Did you know how much blood was spilled during those thirty years and how many innocent poor village lads were killed by those terrorists? Did you sadu’sƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  do anything brave to stop the massacres? When Sadu’s wereƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ killed in hundreds did you try to unite the country? Buddha Sasane too like a political party now as you too have taken sides in the political arena andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ bringing shame to our religion and to the country. Why dont you stay neutral and give your blessings to the Government in power to govern the country we all loved to become a just society? When ever political leaders visits you in your temple or Aramaya you should bless him or her and give spiritual advise not political advise like what you Sadus do today. Our religion is very peaceful and beautiful and it’s a religion of love and kindness. We dont like to see Sadu’s running on the highways lifting their robes and shouting slogans when Police or security personel baton charged you for disturbing the peace and joining with saboteures to break the law of the land. Instead of love and kindness you preach hatred and violence by joining hands with bad guys on the street. How can weƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ worship with a clean heart to these kinds of Buddhist priests when we go to the temple? You Sadus should stop these kind of activities and live a spiritual life preaching goodness to the mankind not hatered and violence.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Mahinda Rajapksa’s Government has given prominence to our Buddhist religion where no other Government has given. As leaders they like our children to live and do things as per the teachings of Lord Buddha andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ requesting the BuddhistƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ clergy to work for the upliftment of ourƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Buddhist culture. Dont give unneccessary statements to the media and make us uncomfortable in the eyes of the world. World media who doesn’t love our country much twistƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ your statements,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ your actions and try to make a big story about it and put in the front pages of their newspapers to discredit our Government and bring shame to our beloved country. You Sadu’s shouldnt act like an ordinary citizens. People look in to you for guidence and advise, by doing unwanted things you only bring bad name to our religion and to to our country therefore behave yourself. Dont think for a moment that we love you like we love our children but Yes for some not all because we expect from you not politics but guidence and advise to become good citizens. Political leaders come and go and we forget them but not the sacred religion of ours BUDDHISM it will be in our heartsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ for ever. Sadune we want you to guide our next generation to become better persons to live a better life with respect for religion, elders, teachers and respect for themselves as human beings. You should not riot on the streets like rowdies who carry slogans and shout dirty words like ordinary laymen. Your place is in the house of God and you should be polite, kind and decent toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ those who comes to ask your help and guide them in the right path. My personal view is that you should join hands with the people to build our shattered nation without taking sides as our society always respect you as the deciples of our Lord Buddha.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Our nation is becoming a disciplined country thanks to the nation’s leaders and their vision for the future. We have a decent Government elected by the majority of our citizens from all corners of our land. The President and the current parliament was elected by a vast majority because of their valuable services to the country and mostly becauseƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ of winning the war of thirty years. Sadune, you should think of those who sacrificed their lives to save our country not the traitors who tried to take our war heros to the war criimes tribunal in Hague? Be reasonable no one has sent to prison for revenge by anybody.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Our justice system is same for every citizen of my country whether rich or poor and their verdict should be respected by all. Treason to your Motherland is punishable crime and those who were guilty should pay the price without shedding crocadile tears. Ven.Monks should not get involved in poltics and interfere in judicery mattersƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ or take sides on highly important matters concerning our country. The world is watching us therefore we need to be careful because we have still enemies out there who dosent like our country moving forward as free peaceful nation. If there is a headlineƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  stating” BUDDHIST MONKS WERE ATTACKED BY GOVERNMENTƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ POLICE FORCE”ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ what will the reaction of our enemies? They are waiting for such headlines and our dirty opposition good for nothing politicians will be more than happy to bring our homeland to that situation because of their hatered towards this Government and specially to our beloved President Mahinda Rajapksa. We have heros and villians in our society but if the hero and the villian both were guilty of any crime both should be guilty as the other one. Our true heros were those who sacrificed their lives to save our Motherland. Because of their sacrifice all the other heros were able to eliminate the enemy completely and bring peace to our beloved nation. So please dont try to divide our nation but help to unite specially by the Buddhist clergy and all other religious leaders in the country also treat all the human beings alike whether rich or poor as we are all God’s children.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Our ven Monks should advise the opposition not to take our country backwards and be against of everything this Government does but to be partners and helps our nation to be the LIGHT OF ASIA for every citizen to live in peace and harmony. They criticize when we were having war with Tamil terrorists. They criticize when our war heros were taking over our land inch by inch from terrorists clutches. They criticize when we were killing and arresting those who did war crimes during the war. They criticize when we end the war and laughed at our war heros making ugly stories about them and our leaders.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ So dear Monks rather than healing the wounds of the cruel warƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ why you take sides and confused the people by doing things what majority doesn’t approve. Dont waste your valuable time by going behind saboteures and traitors instead serve the people of this country in good faith, love and kindness to keep our Buddhist and Lion flag fluttering above the sky and make us proud to be a Buddhist nation who loves peace. Let the politicians do politics and you Ven Monks take care of our religion and the people to be good citizens.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Ane Sadune ratata yahapathak wenna vedakaranna pirisidu hithakin ape dharmayata anuwa. Religion is very important to become a good citizen or good individual. So help us O’ LORD BUDDHA.

I will not be attending Ven Sobhitha’s sermons anymore. He does not know where to draw the line. Frankly monks must stay away from politics.

  2. Malinda Says:

As a leading Sinhala Buddhist intellectual in Sri Lanka (also a poet, novelist and raconteue), I would like to agree with Calistus’s odes. I myself will follow.

We are of the like mind here!

Most of the Buddhist monks in our country are now off the path that Lord Buddha has invented. They use saffron robe and buddhists’ courtesy paid for buddha’s disciples for their own personal gains. Shame on them. What all the buddhists have to do now is that boycott sermons conducted by fake monks and do gather around real monks who practice Lord Buddha’s teaching.
