Sir:

Although ‘Tories target refugee smugglers’  show that the Government had little choice now but to admit
that 90 per cent of the Tamil refugees were scammers, and the Conservative, Liberal and the NDP  parliamentarians had to  go along defending  the Tamil refugees anyway, as they were bloating their voter bank and did not want to antoganize the Tamil community in the Greater Toronto Area.

I hope this bill will also target the Canadian-Tamil groups who are in the refugee smuggling equation like the  association that admitted that they had information of those who were on ‘Sun Sea” as well as their relatives back in Sri Lanka as well as in Canada.

And finally, I am glad to know that the bill will also revoke the refugee status, “If an asylum seeker returned to his or her country for a holiday or a wedding, that could be grounds for revoking their refugee status.”

This was a point that I openly discussed  about the Tamil refugee claimants through your letters to the editor columns for over 20 years.  Maclean’s Paul Kaihla in his feature article ‘The People Smugglers’ of April 29, 1996, made this point clearly when he said,

“According to records from the consular section of the Sri Lankan high commission, more than 8,600 Sri Lankans with refugee claims pending in Canada applied for travel documents to visit Sri Lanka in 1992.  The following year, the figure was 5,865.  If those refugees feared persecution in their homeland, why were they so eager to return.”  Good point. But the then the Liberal government wanted nothing to do with this scam.  And I understand, as they were clawing at the Tamil votes, to send nine Liberals from the GTA ridings where the Tamils resided in the thousands.

You have brought up a very valid point in the refugee business Mr. Asoka Weerasinghe. You should follow this up with a letter to the Defence scretary in Sri Lanka to compile a list of recent refugees who have visited Sri Lanka to their respective adopted coutries for their information and see what they do next.
