TERRENCE DE SILVA – K.S.A

Attached is a photograph which I took in the Transit Lounge of The Frankfurt International Airport, Frankfurt Germany on 2nd June 2010 and the “Christ” Jewellery & Watches” is a popular brandmark and this retail outlet has been there for several years; with no untoward problems arising and no one being offended by it.

I made it a point to take this picture as I had in mind people Who raise objections to the use of the name Buddha & Mohammed.

And Pandula Ranatunga and his article which appears with pictures In the Lanka Web of 28th November 2010 is a very good example.

Therefore I cannot understand people who profess to be Buddhists and Muslims who lay claim that they are offended by the use of the Name Buddha or Mohammed on signboards. True enough the words “The Greedy Buddha” may sound and look a bit too eye-catching.

But there can be no claim of their followers to a copyright license against the use of these names.

Yes the Word CHRIST on a signboard is OK, but would it be alright as Jesus Christ Bar, or image of Jesus Christ on Ladies Brassieres, underwear, and on footwear.

Christians do not believe Jesus Christ is a prophet. They believe the God came to this world as Jesus Christ and died at the cross to pay for the humans sin of eating a forbidden fruit (apple). Indeed, Jesus Christ said he is the God. But Old testament says as earlier Prophets of the God said that everything we see and perceive had been created by the God. So, using God’s name for brassieres or wine bars or for anything may be acceptable for Christians.

Buddha had given up all worldly pleasures when he became an acetic. He had never been greedy. Greed plays no part in Buddha Dhamma. As such, the name ‘greedy buddha’ to a restaurant or ‘buddha bar’ to a pub does not go with the teaching of Buddha. That is why such usage offend Buddhists.

Muslims believe in the same God as Christians and Jews. But popular thinking is Allah is a different God. Actually Allah is singular and is the Arabic name for ‘the God’. Koran says Jesus ate just like all others; so, Muslims do not buy the Christian theory of the original sin or Jesus is ‘the God’. Muslims say Jesus is a prophet and Mohammed is the last prophet. What matters is what last the prophet said, they say. After Koran Muslims look up for Mohammed’s life and work for guidance. So they hate using Mohammed’s name for anything they dislike. Unlike Buddhists Muslims would issue fatwa on those who offend them.

You are being presumptuous in your statement about “no one being offended by” the advertising sign at the Frankfurt Airport. I bet many Christians are even if they have not made a song and dance about it. It is offensive to Christians just as the improper use of the names of the Buddha and Mohamed is to believers of those faiths. Indeed, for many of us, improper use of the names of holy people of any faith is unacceptable.

If nothing else, it is simply a matter of good manners not to give offence to others.
