ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Results are being announced in the 2nd round of local government elections held in Sri Lanka today.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Elections were held for 65 Local Government Institutions which were postponed due to pending Court cases following rejection of nominations by the Elections CommissionerƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Office.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ There was a great enthusiasm throughout the country in todayƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s election.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The United PeopleƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) headed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa has taken a lead and the in the first result announced, the Talawakele Village Council has been won by the UPFA.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Candidates of UPFA is also reported to be leading in other LG Institutions as well.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Voting commenced at 7 am today in 2,226 polling stations. The elections were held for one municipal council, 9 urban councils and 55 Village Councils. 5,686 candidates from 20 political parties and 72 independent groups contested in the elections to elect 875 members.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ This is the first time that the people of the north joined in a free and fair election. People of Kilinochchi and Mulaitivu districts, which were under the jackboots of the tiger terrorists exercised their franchise for the first time after 30 years.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In the Northern Province elections were held for 20 local government institutions in the Jaffna, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Elections were held for 6 institutions in the Western Province which were Kaduwela Municipal Council, Kesbewa and Minuwangoda urban councils and Homagama, Aththanagalla and Agalawatte village councils. In the Central Province elections were held for 5 institutions which were Lindula Urban Council and Harispattuwa, Akurana, Yatinuwara, Wilgamuwa and Ukuwela Village Councils.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The number of institutions in the Southern Province amounted to 4 and which were Elpitiya, Baddegama, Akmeemana and Akuress village councils.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In the Eastern Province elections were held for Karaitivu, Thirukkowil, Seruwila, Kanthale, Kuchchaweli and for Trincomalee village councils.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In the North Western Province elections were held for the Chilaw Urban Council and Giribawa, Kuliyapitiya, Polgahawela, Mawathagama, Chilaw and Wennappuwa village councils.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In the north Central Province elections were held for six institutions, which were Central Nuwaragam Palatha, Rajanganaya, Galnewa, Elahera, Hingurakgoda and Welikanda village councils
In the Uva Province elections were held for Siyambalanduwa and Moneragala village councils.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In the Sabaragamuwa province elections were held for 7 institutions which were Kegalle and Embilipitiya Urban Councils and Rathnapura, Balangoda, WeligepolaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and Ruwanerlla village councils.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In the first round of elections held on March 17thƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the United Peoples Freedom Alliance secured a historic landslide victory taking control of 205 local bodies of the 234 Local Government Institutions for which elections were held.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The UPFA uprooted the opposition parties from the strongholds they held for years. The Opposition United National Party was wiped out in many areas and they have been pushed to the third place by the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi which secured control of 12 Councils in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ However, the UPFA made deep penetration into these areas as well taking control of several Local Government Institutions in the North and East as well.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The United National Party which had control of 32 councils previously was able to get control only of 9 councils in the first round of the polls.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The extremist and dogmatic Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) which held control of the Tissamaharama Pradeshiya Sabhawa for over 10 years lost badly in their only stronghold. It came to third place in this local council, and they wereƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ unable to get control of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ any of the local government institutions for which elections were held.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The United PeopleƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Freedom Alliance took complete control of many of the districts which included the ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Batticaloa district in the Eastern Province, Galle, Matara and Hambantota all the 3 districts in the Southern Province, Gampaha district in the Western province, Puttalam district in the North Western province, both districts of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa in the North Central District, Moneragala district of the Uva Province and both districts of Ratnapura and Kegalle in the Sabaragamuwa district.

Tamils even though they highly devided caste or tirbe wise, they are united whenthey want to exploit tamils politically for the politicians advantage. That is why TNA initially, got under LTTE umbrella and made tamils getting killed. Now, they are united party and even Mano Ganeshan got into the gang and now all will exploit tamils.
