Piece for peace

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ mettena cittena

Dear Sir,
Sri Lanka continues to be haunted by people who are least interested by the immense sufferings experienced by one to two generations of Tamils who do not know another life other than war, conscription to fight government forces, hatred towards the Sinhalese, etc. The fight, prosecution attempts, rhetoricƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ continuesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ at the UN, at the WesternƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ government fronts, Human Rights Councils, etc while street wisdom dictates that these people need assistance to restart their lifes, livelihoods, and build bridges between the Sinhalese and Tamils by more exchanges, communication between both communities and overcoming the language barrier through cultural programs, sports, student exchanges,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ compulsory jointƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ student leadership trainings, etc. The bridges needs to be built fast. Too many young people haveƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ sacrificed their lifes andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ it should not be in vain. The support for investment and climate for peace mustƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ be vigorous.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
The people in the field are indeed being helped. AmidstƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the continuing rhetorics, it is indeed a humbling experience for the army to now help rebuild and help the very people they fought against who have undergone rehabiliatation, etc. It is equally humbling and a cognitive dissonance for the ex-combatants to receive assistance from the very people they once were taught to despise, fight against and kill. Please visit this website below, click humanitarian projects and then click the Rebuilding War Torn Lifes- Sri Lanka. Piece, by piece Bhante Wimala assists in this path towards peace in his own way. Little by little these adds on to become so many projects and to think one individual can inspire and pull off so many projectsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ is indeed amazing. That is the power of determination, a Boddhisatva Parami! For the Tamil people, Bhante has rebuilt houses, kovils, provided robes for the Hindu priests, provided cows for single mothers, built wells for drinking water and irrigation, renovated reservoirs, etc.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Let the Tamils know that there is so much good being done by so many people. Such news need to reach out to them. Sadly they are more often than not bombarded with the negative news only which continues to build their hatred within until a point they will not even believe if good work is done.
People need to know there is so much good that is being done, why are they only exposed to the rhetorics etc to create, incite hatred, etc?ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Bad news sells, good news does not? Why do the powers that be continue to drive a wedge between both sides? We humans loveƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ war and hatred, and abhor peace? A Tamil could be reborn as a Sinhalese in the next life, so can a Sinhalese be reborn a Tamil in his next life. We could be fighting, killingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and and breeding hatred againtsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ our past life fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, husband, wife, etc. That is indeed the wheel of life.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Let us not be pawnsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ for others’ hidden agenda.

Most Rev: Mettena Cittena!.. Very impressive & good for all believers & non – believers to read this article & what Lord Buddha said many centuries ago. In the west we believe that every action has an equal & opposite reaction.

Buddhists also beleive in KARMA, we do intetionaly or otherwise just to be a part of a group who are hell bent on FALSE propaganda to do HARM to innocent people. We are guided by PANCHA SEELA ( five precepts)..mostly these are common sense values, even if DO NOT beleive in FAITH. We also beleive that PART OF KARMA, has to be paid in SUFFERING, before we live our NEXT LIFE. Certain %tage MUST be paid as dues in this life.

If majority of Tamil people can live peacefully in the HEART CITY of Sinhakese, WHY cannot Tamils live peacefully in other parts of Lanka, whether it is NORTH or EAST.

In Canada, majority people use to ask OVER & OVER again,WHAT DOES QUEBEC want?? We can ask the same question…WHAT DOES do TAMILS want.??.. After the war was over our GENERAL Fonseka SAID SO ELOQUENTLY.. We are the majority. You tamils are the minority.. LEARN TO LIVES US>> peacefully!!.. DO NOT ASK for undue demands. Unfortunately for some other reasons that General had to go to prison for planning to upstaage a coup against our President.

I feel we Sinhalese HAVE GIVEN enough.. Now I am told the Tamil poupltaion has dwindeled to 3.9% of the total Lankan popultaion.

Who will give ANY leverage to people being such a minority, seeking to ASK or DEMAND with THREATENING comments. Will any govt.,however peace loving with majority will SUCCUMB that type of demands. If Tamils continue to demand & threaten the majority, before long they might even LOSE the equal status, in language culture & ability to live in Sinhala areas.

I feel, as you have expressed your views, Sinhalese should speak up before its too late. Thanks again for the vauable contribution.

Gamunu Alahakkone. P. Eng( Canada).C.Eng (UK).
