ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The Man just like another of the same ilk in a high profile international capacity the ignominious Eric Solheim of Norway has the nerve to enter Sri Lanka, avail himself of an all expense paid vacation under the guise of a UN posting and thenƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ publicises lies and innuendo without a shred of evidence beyond hearsay and the apathetic bleatings ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ proƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Tamil Tiger sympatisers and Tamils who started the decades long insurgency. In a book he calls the Cage he seems to have taken many liberties to paint Sri Lanka as a Nation of criminalsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and perhaps appropriatelyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ relative to the title of his book,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ he needs a cage to be locked up in for the mischief he is attempting to cause!ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
As UN spokesman during the bloody end of Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s civil war, Gordon Weiss says the organisation ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”should have pushed harderƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ to save lives, especially those of trapped civilians… but he does not seem to have an answer as to why the UN has been brought to so much disreputeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ albeit with impunity through the bunglings of leaders such as Koffi Annan and Ban Ki Moon who were not only dubious personalities where the latter has had some good fortune towards a second term based perhaps on the apathies of those who continue to tolerate them despite their transparencies towards inefficiencyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ rather than being dumped for someone with better credentials! where both leaders turned a blind eye to many attrocities around the world during their tenure and fiddled away with their tunes as did a despotic Roman emperor once where all aroung him was burning!

To suggest that “they do whatever they like – arrest people without reason, torture people for as long as they wish, and fabricate charges which can land people in prison without bail”. are bold lies and exaggerated concoctions for which Weiss indeed desreves to be locked up in that metaphorical cage refered to or perhaps even burned at the stake as they did in less humane times of yore for his unspeakable accusations of a Nation and its leader who brought so much calm, tranquility and progress within the land today. He would in all probabilities get scoffed by the Tamils who have settled in the North and East today and may even be asked to go to hell with his “Gilded Caged” which heƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ seems so deserving of being the sole occupant !

The furthest from the truth in the opinions of many who time and time again flock to this resplendent land and enjoy its tranquility even at the peak of the insurgent troubles inƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ places like Nicaragua, El Salvador, Iraq, Afghanustan, Pakistan just to name a fewƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and many other countries of real dangerous repute so where did the man get his facts one wonders!

Weiss seems to be quick to demonise the Sri Lankan Administration and the Armed Forces who in fact have done a huge favour for the Nation in liberating it from terrorism, has the audacity to accuse the armed forces who liberated hundreds of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ thousands of fleeing Tamils who were being gunned down by the terrorists and the humanitarian effort which eventually saved them never even mentioned beyond some ChannelƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ 4 fairy taleƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and instead portrays the terrorists as less culpable than the Armed Forces for the sufferings of the trapped Tamils within a cordon of LTTE terrorists and for this blatant and callous portrayal of suchƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ insidious lies he needs that cage for certain but not before a few lashes are meted out to him!

It needs also to be mentioned for the record that Weiss is no longer with the UN as he is reputed to have fallen from the graces of that not so prestigious organization which seems to have at some stage of his career provided cannon fodder for fis explosive rhetoric which in all probabilities is indicative that all his meanderings about situations beyond his true comprehension are somewhat meaningless!

Weiss means white or knows in German and this fellow is a German-Australian and probably has Luthiren ancestry. He is after money for his book and probably has tasted ‘dosi’ at LTTE gala dinners for collecting funds.

I am not very familiar with Gordon Weiss or how UN acts regarding problems encountered with respective nations. Sri Lanka is a long standing member during which interlectuals such as Gamini Corea, Mr.Dhanapala & many other young orators who contributed to UNO & earned respect and honour.
Re: this unfortunate situation, we as Sri lankans whole heatedly support the present GOVTs. version of events. Its an humanitarian operation that was carried out to save tamils from their own BRUTAL terrorists. Just imagine within 2 short years, massive number of tamils are rehabilitated, some are pardoned by President & still process of freeing all IDPs completely by the end of this year 2011.
When people whether they are white or black, brown or yellow criticize others, they themselves should look at their own wars, problems before casting remarks or pass judgements.
Proper punishments will be given by none other than the general public of those respective countries, and take them screaming for instigating never ending wars, conflicts created by themselves for political or territorial gains.
People will rise up for what their leaders did to their own economies in the name of human rights, and other petty grievancies outlined, judged by their own political leaders.
Till then Hands off Sri Lanka.. because we have done no other country has done, after the defeat of terrorist menace.

Just my contribution to this unfortunate situation, which still haunts us due to our own compassion, our troops professionalism & good nature. Even retired Indian General pointed out the Indian Army could not have won this war, with limited casualities. He also praised our soldiers, so did leaders of Philiphines among others.
Sri lanka is ONE nation united, under one flag, indivisible……and All blessings to our motherland.

Gordon Weiss says in his book titled “The Cage” that “he should have pushed harder” at the UN to avert a civilian disaster. Obviously he is suggesting that a Peace Keeping force should have been sent to the war zone by the UN. Would this be possible without the consent of the Sri Lankan government? I don’t think the SL government would have agreed bearing in mind the desire to eliminate the LTTE altogether. So, why talk about hypothetical and improbable situations. These are arguments brought about to justify the innocence of the author. A reasonable assumption of casualty figures could only be assessed by subtracting the total number of civilians registered at the temporary IDP centres from the population figures in the affected districts. Consideration should be given to people who fled to India and to the south of SL. Rather than quoting hypothetical casualty figures of 20,000 or 40,000 which no doubt arouse emotions and level accusations against the government of Sri Lanka, it would be better if the author worked on these lines. But then, where is his justification to castigate Sri Lanka?
In all probability the casualty figure may be less than 5000 and most of them would have been LTTE fighters in uniform and those fighters in civvies and not forgetting those civilians who were forced to do military duties and the diehard supporters of LTTE who were among them all the time (Mahavir families). Of course what we talk nowadays as “Collateral damage” has to be considered as well. Please tell me about a “war” without casualties?
