ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ By Ameer

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ There is a photo on page 02 of the Daily Mirror of 27/09/2011. The photo shows our mayoral candidate Muzammil flanked by Devatagaha “moulavis”, devotees, Ranil Wickremasinghe and Muzammil’s well-wishers. This photo has been taken beside the grave of the Devatagaha saint. The Meezan on the head side of the grave is bedecked with garlands. This reminds one of the chief deity of a Hindu Kovil where the statue of pilliar is bedecked liberally.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Our Prophet Sallahu Alaihivasallam has compulsorily prohibited and made it haram of high order of anything Jews, Christians and followers of other religions practised. For example, he prohibited Muslims from fasting on the days the Jews fasted. Like this a lot of examples could be cited. It is sad our fellow Muslims, especially Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan follow all what followers of other religions do. Here are a few examples:ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Churches and kovils and dagobas are decorated with cloth flags from the pinnacle to the earth. It is done in some mosques and graves of “supposed to be saints”.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In the places of worship of other religions males and females freely mingle and they (the places of worship) are even used as meeting point for loversƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬- Tamil cinema is a typical example for this. Same kind of things happens or can happen in the Muslim grave sites as well. Kalmunai Kadakaraipalli and Kattankudy jawath “alim’ palli, payalwan palli are examples.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Buddhists and Hindus wear a kind of blessed threads round their wrists. Muslims who visit these Muslim grave sites also wear this blessed threads.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Thali tradition (it is now fading but not fully eliminated)

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Music (Bajan) is part and parcel of Hindu and Christian religious traditions. Ungrammatical Arabic songs like “Thalai pathiha”, the moulooth are sung at the houses of people who frequent this graves.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In Pakistan, there is a grave site which is known as “whatever you askƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ Waliullah will give give” (a loose translation for Kettathai Kodukkum Waliullah).ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ This grave site was frequented by benazir bhutto.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ She venerated and worshiped this throughout her political life to face a tragic death.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In my home town Kattankudy there were a lot of strange practices until recently during annual 30-day Buhari recital.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ During this period, the people encouraged by the trustees and conniving ulema would bring vows “Nerchai”.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ Here are some examples:

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ A kind of rice flour porridge with flour lumps in the shape of marble balls dipped into it (It is called Kottai Pukkai).ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ It is a vow for those having hernia as it has something to do with testicles.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ A portion of first harvest from the plants (Mango, plantain, coconut, pomegranate, etc) is given at the Buhary Recital to get the blessings. This is something similar to pongal.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Salt will be given to the mosque during Buhari Recital to protect people from skin diseases.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Like these people would bring different kind of stuffs and even live animals and birds (goats, fowls, ducks, etc) according to their particular vow.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ At the end of the recital every night after the Isha prayers the things will be auctioned.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ A bowl of water will be passed to be blown with the Buhary reciters into it and the it be distributed to the sick.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The religion I was born into and studied categorically instructs me that these things are haram, stupid and idiotic.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Our Muzammil hajiyar perhaps believes the Devatagaha saint will make him victorious in the Colombo Municipal election.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ For exposing this, please do not label me as a Wahabist.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ Put these things into your mind and educate others too to follow pure Islam as far as possible.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ You need not be thableeque man/woman or a Wahabist to do this.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ You have the evidences handy – Al-Qaran, Al-Hadheeths and books of Imams – Shafie, Hanafi, Hambali, Malik.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ Pool them and follow what is suitable to you.ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒÆ’‚£ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¡‚¬

    Agree with Ameer.

This politician is making use of religion for political purposes which the very reason why he should lose. He cannot win.

We need a mayor who can work with the government, western provincial council and people of all religious groups. This person cannot.

Though UNP won in Colombo, UNP is in short of majority. Thousands of traditional Tamil speaking Colombo voters are blindly loyal to UNP for so long. UNP has never done anything to solve garbage, slums and dirty run down streets in Colombo. Just because of their blind faith, the “intelligent” voters of Colombo prefer to wallow in shit, voted for a UNP candidate who is a three wheeler driver with no political or governing experience.
The “intelligent” Colombo voters elected a person who has connections to Panchikawatte gang and underworld gangster M.N. Naufer alias “Potta Naufer” as a mayor of Colombo.
