Ref; Whither Sri Lanka? by Mahinda Gunasekera Canada
Posted on October 15th, 2011

Douglas

Thank you Mr. Mahinda Gunasekera. You have hit the nail on the head. The people of Sri Lanka are at the present moment lamenting ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ Aney, Anichchan. Mokada Me WenneƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚. (Alas, what is hapepning). After winning and eradicating the ruthless ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-terrorismƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, this Govt. is unable to win the war against its own clan of ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-TerroristsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.

What about the eye witness who said that he saw ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-DumindaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ first slapped Bharatha and he fell to the ground. Then he pulled his pistol and shot Bharath on his leg. (please note, this is according to what is reported in the media). Why Police not notifying that to the Courts and ask for protective custody of the MP Duminda who is receiving treatment at the Sri Jayawardane Pura Hopital? ShouldƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢nt he be a prime suspect in the murder of Bharatha? Of course, Police will say that there is no complaint to that effect by the victim. The victim is no more.

AlsoƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  please remember, there is a ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-systemƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, (in Sri Lanka,) called ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-billy boyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ who agrees to surrender and accept any crime, provided they are looked after financially and very well protected. This is a well organized system orperated by the underworld gangs and the real criminal goes free. Of course, the real criminal, has to pay a lot of money for this ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-billy boyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ operation. Who knows whether these so called arrested belong to this system? So far the information, is that they are all underworld gang members. So there will be lot of people who will admit to have paid passage to India and provided protection. Well, as you said, we will wait and see.

We expected a lot from this Govt. ( minimum of decent linving, free of corruption, intimidation etc.) and still hope that things would change for the better. We have not given up hopes. Look at a Minister who goes to a Hindu temple and releases the sacrificial animals. Although, it is a good deed, he is not the authority who is entrusted with that responsiblity. Now the, LTTE rump is planning to interpret that as a ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-human right violationƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and the GovtƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-active high handedness in supressing the minority,TamilsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚. This is highlighted with the threat that MuslimƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s issued to the Minster that he would be seriously dealt with if he tried the same tactics on the sacrficial of goats on their holy day. Evidently the Minister in question was silent after that threat.

Next, this same Minister summoned a parent who ciritcized a lottery of a school to raise funds to build a swimming pool and slapped him in the presence of the buddhist clergy and the school pricipal. This has been well documemnted in vedio clips and those working to bring the S/L Govt. to book are very active preparing the next ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Channel 4ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚³. This will be screened along with the Kollonawa shooting.

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Whither Sri Lanka ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ is a very appropriate subject that every Sri Lankan should raise at this stage and draw the atttention of the Govt. Also, remember the outside sources and big powers are waiting with ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-dollarsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ to organize the so called ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-mass prtestsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ for democracy which would give them an opportunity to put their fingers into the affaris of the country. The dangers are imminent, unless the Govt. and the people are waking up to recognize the seriousness of this situation. So emminent writers and experts, please take up this situation for a very serious discussion and bring home the truth and press the governing parties to wake up and initiate some concrete steps to drive away this menace and clean the stable.

That is the greatest service to my country at this point of time.

If the President downwords are disciplined and behave like ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-true gentlemenƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and carry on the governance, it will set an example to the rest. The capitalists (perhaps you refer to the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-business communityƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚) would never resort to asking for favours or go through the wrong way to obtain their fortunes in the wrong way. There are well laid down procedures and everyone from the Top must follow it and no favours, however much important will never be circumvented for any reason whatsoever. The next is to follow the steps of transparency and allow the public, including the media the right to obtain information. The next step is to come down hard on anyone who violate the procedures and meet out punishments through the junstice system, which should be swift and fair. A long drawn legal battle in courts will be expensive and will not bring the desired effects of commiunicating the results to the public.

The ordinary man on the streets and villages are waiting this to happen. So donƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t say that there is no way. There is a way, if there is a ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-willƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚. The politicians from ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-TopƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ to ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-bottomƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ are not bent on good governance, but simply bent on maintaing and hanging on to power in the wrong way. They spent a fortune to get into power and naturally they have to recollct that by hook or crook.

For example, look at the Police. Are they allowed to do their job independently? If any criminal is arrested, there will be a politician who will call on the Police to safeguard him. On the otherhand, the Police offficers, themselves act in the most stupid manner in many instances and lost the confidence of the public. The Angulana case and the Dompe cases are examples. Why?. The recruitment and the taining process are so bad and leave room to be disired. Go round the city and suburbs and see for yourself the type of people who have been recruited to the Police Force. Can they command respect and expect them to be law-enformcement personnel? In all that process there is Political influence and interference.

Travel to other countries and compare the stature of the personnel who man the law-enforcement divisions. The recruitment procedures are so taugh and rough and the training programmes are well designed that they are looked upon to be the custodians of the law to ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-protect and serve.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ They are made capable.by training, to carry out their assigned duties without favour and their dicisions are only to be challenged through the legal systems. So the public have a tremendous trust, confidencs and love towards them.

What do you find in Sri Lanka? I was cought for speeding and the officer bluntly told me that if a ticket is given you pay so much, but it can be settled, if I pay a lesser amont to him. So what more? This is the type of corrupt administration, at the very botton, we have.

In other countries, the officer will issue the ticket and explain the legal system available to me in case that I decide to challange his dicision. If I try to bribe him or talk my way through, he will issue me another ticket and that will be another offence.

So think who corrupted this system? It is no one else, other than the elected representatives of the people. That is why I say that it shoud start from the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-TOPƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚. Just think of what is going on in Kelaniya. The elected respresentative declares himself as the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-thugƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-lawƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ ect. Would the :TRIPPLE GEMƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ ever bless this country, even though, the day is started with the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-PIRITHƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ chanting on all media outlets aired beginning at 4.00 a.m?

  1. Lorenzo Says:

“Would the :TRIPPLE GEM” ever bless this country, even though, the day is started with the “PIRITH” chanting on all media outlets aired beginning at 4.00 a.m?”

This is a spiteful and racist remark.

In my understanding the Noble Triple Gem always bless the country to save it from evil and help people understand what is right. However, people (especially politicians) must do their share in doing the right thing.

If all Sri Lankans seek guidance in the Noble Triple Gem and Pirith, none of this would ever happen!

Now who is not following the Noble Triple Gem and Pirith?

I can think of many including the Silvas!!

May be it is a good thing to teach children of all faiths to seek guidance in the Noble Triple Gem and Pirith.

But then why are some people against it? Isn’t that the problem?

  2. Dham Says:

4.00 am pirith came after 5.00 am ALLAHHU AKBAR loud around Colombo.
Whther Pirith is there or not Noble Tripple Gem will always be the Tripple Gem.
Blessing will depend on how you practice Douglas.
If you practice loving kindness Tripple Gem will bless you too , regardless of your race , religion or caste.
Even when Buddha’s time violence was there , right next door.
Jesus was killed mercilessly by violence.
Lorenzo, not sure whether Silvas follow Noble Tripple Gem or “Survival of the Fittest ( animal)” religion.
Action will tell ! Fools are killing each other to strive in the modern world with maxiumum craving and desires.
Let them die, we cannot stop but it is the Prsidents duty to clean the country of thuggery before it is too late.

  3. Ben_silva Says:

Douglas, you mentioned Chanting and triple Gem. Has the triple Gem protected us ? Has chanting achieved any thing ? It is perhaps a neurolinguist calming tool. Are we still in the dark ages, hoping that chanting and preying will work ? Dham may benifit from listening to Pirith chantings.

  4. Ben_silva Says:

To respond to Lorenzo. Should we teach children facts and critical thinking or should we teach unproven myths in religion, that could cloud their thinking. As for religions, which mainly rely on belief, there are over 0 religions in the world. What is the point of teaching Buddhism, when it has led to the extinction of Buddhists and is not now believed, as the major religion, in the source country India. Or would Lorenzo prefer Christianity or Muslim religion to be taught ?
My view is we certainly need to teach children values, truth, justice, fairness, morality, right and wrong without dragging religion.

  5. Sri Rohana Says:

Dham this man Rev. Ben Silva has to stop insulting Buddhism. He is a Christian fundamentalist. I have noticed his every comment ends up in insulting Buddhism or Buddhists. He has no right to do so. What is the relationship between Mulleriyawa murder case and Buddhism? Why should Buddhism get blamed for a criminal act. Enough is enough!
Christian fundamentalist Ben Silva should understand that in Sri Lanka’s 70% have a faith on Buddhism so what right he has to criticize other’s faith. If he continue to criticize Buddhism we also have to treat the same way he understand. Get ready to criticize your Christian faith Ben Silva. We taught Prabakaran the language he understood. Similar way Christian fundamentalist Ben Silva will get the reply with the language he understands.

  6. Lorenzo Says:

    Dham,

    Read what I wrote.

“Now who is not following the Noble Triple Gem and Pirith?

I can think of many including the Silvas!!”

    Ben,

I agree religion alone cannot resolve this. We need action.

But lets not discard religion yet. Buddhist meditation has proven physical (including mental) benefits. We should get them. I see no connection between Buddhism and the Mulleriyawa shooting.

Of course there was a strong connection between the Puttlam killing of an innocent policeman and a barbaric religious group. But no such connection here.

  7. Dham Says:

    Rohana,
I agree all SirLankans should condemn this fool Gon Silva.
This foolś view is the fool certainly need to teach children values, truth, justice, fairness, morality, right and wrong without dragging religion.
Gon Silva may not have born into a Sinhala-Buddhist family.
Sinhala Buddhist have a unique set of values found no where else in the world.
What values Gon Silva teaches his children in UK ?
Jumping up and down after getting drunk on Friday night ?
    Telling lies like BBC ?
Killing innocent people in Libya ?
Fortunately for us and with merit to our noble Sangha we do have the best religion regardless of the Silvaś killing each other due to foolishness. Who is this fool to teach us how to live ?

  8. sarath Says:

The relegions Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism all are fundamentally tell the same think. Unfortunately the leaders of the relegions are the one’s who creates lot of ills around the world. Involvement of relegion in plotics should not be allowed. That is dangerous particularly in multi cultural society. Relegion can play role in deciplining the society but should not allow them to create hatreeness with others. So, no point in teaching relegions. As Ben Silva poined out Children should be taught human values such as truth, justice, fairness, tolerance, transperancy etc.

  9. Fran Diaz Says:

Whatever is good & life supportive in all religions should be retained, and whatever is not helpful in life should be gently put aside. Chanting & Meditation quietens the mind into sanity & life supportive activities. In all religions, the Core Teachings are life supportive and should be practiced.
Animal sacrifices are barbaric and pagan practices. Killing human beings may come easy to sections of society that practice animal sacrifices. Someone known to me in Lanka was horrified that a goat was brought into their neighbors new home and slaughtered as an animal sacrifice. Tamil Nadu has banned animal sacrifices by Law, and many states in India have done the same. Animal sacrifices are not allowed in the grounds of any Temple or Mosque in the west either.
As for political killings in Sri Lanka, thugs of various hue have to answer for those killings. What can we do about stopping thuggery ?

Dr Sudath Gunasekara’s article in the Lankaweb addressing a new system of governance within Democracy will solve most of these problems created by the political party system that we have at present. Under Dr SG’s solution, the law of the land will prevail and not political interference.

  10. RanjithD Says:

It is sad that some of those who are commenting here have caught this article at the wrong end. It is true that the last statement is simply unwanted. But the crux of the matter is not in that statement. yet many do not seem to be responding to the real issues raised here and are trying to kill each other in arguing on the validity/ invalidity of Pirith in the morning. Douglas has blundered and made a gross injustice to his own article by this last statement but what he has raised before should be taken up. We in Sri Lanka seem to be good at scornful attacks on each other’s religions and beliefs and ideas. Please stay on course and write sensibly. Thanks Fran Diaz and Sarath for not falling into the pit.

  11. AnuD Says:

Sri Lanka’s law enforcement and justice system is not working right now. Everybody complains but people at the top seem to be deaf.

Generally, the system is set up by the bureaucrats and the system is steered by a politician. If that system gets frequent complains that minister should resign as he has proved that he is incompetent to handle that ministry.

Can that happen in Sri Lanka.

I think, in the case of Kudu-Duminda’s case, the verdict is already delivered. Generally, when the president’s office wants to something it is a minister who suggest it to the media. This time, it is too sensitive ministers don’t want to handle it. So, a bureaucrat, govt top media guy has come out and had said that “DUMINDA IS INNOCENT IN THE SHOOTING”. So, that is the Sri Lankan Justice and law enforcement system.

As Douglas says says Sri Lankan law enforcement system is out-sourced. That is why BILLY BOY system exists.

  12. RanjithD Says:

You are absolutely right Anud, there was a news item that said that there was no evidence to suggest that Duminda was instrumental in the shoot out. So the final decision has been taken possibly at the highest level HE IS INNOCENT. Doctors have been brought from singapore to save his life and the government is on overdrive to clear his innocence.

Although it is not the right thing to do, do not be surprised if the people will deliver their own justice in the circumstances. Shall we say that the beginning of the end of MR is just beginning. Gotas statesmanship has descended to the lower pits. Poor Sri Lanka, it will never be able to rise. Poor Sri Lankans are doomed.

  13. Ben_silva Says:

Dumb Dham who said ‘We will earn less, be less competitive and die like Buddhist’ would certainly benifit by listening to Pirith to calm himself.

  14. AnuD Says:

Dham says, it is the president’s duty to clean the country from thuggary.

    Think the other side.

If there is a functioning system why president has to involve. It is the police department’s duty. Whose authority is it under. It is the president.

If the police is not doing there job every one at the top need to be sacked. Now many IGPs came. They all said, they are going to clean. If every IGP is a paid servant of the Drug cartels who has to look into that.

Then on top of that, why politicians, mostly Mervyn silva and Duminda are immune to the justice and law enforcement system. Why there is a separate and a different law enforcement and justice system for politicians. (I read some where, that Lakshman Hulugalle, gave major media guy had said that Duminda is innocent. How come, responsible people lie that way ?. Why he is the judge, right at the beginning ?)

It is the president who appoints all these commissions under the 18th amendment. Why did he take over all these if he cannot do ?

Instead of beating around the bush, we need to address the root cause.

  15. Marco Says:

The arrogance of MR GOSL on this shooting incident is unbelievable and beyond all understanding.. We have not even seen the “token” gesture of the Police or CID wishing to interview Duminda regarding the incident. All we appear to hear is that DS is out of danger, taken bullets out. (Frankly, the streets of Sri Lanka are much safer if this thug remains in ICU and the drug issue taken to task).
The President then states that ‘I decide on protection, no one can question’.
Then we have the Hulugalle stating that Duminda is not a suspect.
Who are we trying to kid?

  16. ranjith Says:

    Hello Marco,

Let Duminda or Bharatha or any politician kill themselves.

Why do innocent masses like us need to worry?

Please feel free to think about innocent folks.

People do not have any power in this country.

Let’s shut up our mouths and do mind our business.

  17. Lorenzo Says:

    Dham and Ben,

    My apologies for the misunderstanding.

By “Silvas” I meant Mervyn and Duminda only. Was not intending to attack any commentator here or anyone else.

I have no problem with names; its only the conduct.

  18. Lorenzo Says:

    Duminda Silva is not alone.

What did the governments do to investigate Cyril Matthew, Sirisena Coorey, Ranil W, Hakeem (protected LTTE mass murderers under the 2002 CFA when the world declared war on terror), etc.?

Nothing. This is a problem of the system not particular about the current president. But he is no different to JR, RP, CBK in terms of selective justice. I hope he changes this which will make him a far better president than JR, RP and CBK.

  19. Lorenzo Says:

    AnuD,

The system is at fault. Executive presidency must go. Executive president has immunity from anything and he can select who else has immunity. That is a stupid system that protects criminals.

    A system change is needed.

  20. radha Says:

Lorenzo, please don’t say it is the system that is wrong. That’s just a cop out. Be man enough and say that it is the people who run the system who are at fault. The system will function as well or as bad as the people who run it. All of our leaders, irrespective of their color, they were only interested in filling their bellies and nepotism. Hell with the country, as long as they get fat during their tenure, do what they could to maintain a dynasty and just deceive the people with their words. Try to point out their faults; they dish out fear. There is no future for Sri Lanka really, because there are no leaders who love their country beyond their families, and that applies to all the 4 or 5 families who have been to the Palace near the harbor. Just look at the advancements made by Singapore and Malaysia, both got their independence in the sixties, whereas Sri Lanka has returned to the feudal times of 150 BC. Even we have cardboard cut outs of Dutugemunu in Kelaniya these days.

  21. Cerberus Says:

Radha here are a few facts for your edification since you seem to see only the bad side of Sinhalese.
    1. Tamils must be the most ungrateful people on earth. Due to 3000 years of being untouchables they seem to have a permanent chip on the shoulder. In Sri Lanka from 1948 we provided free education, free health care and free food for low income families unlike in Tamil Nadu. In return what was done to Sri Lanka by your people is unforgivable. Most of the Tamil professionals abroad who are funding the LTTE and now the rump are people who got their education in Sri Lanka. Where is the gratitude?
    2. If you had really had repressive leaders like Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore where control is so tight no one could criticize him then you would really scream. All the Tamils are free to criticize the Rajapakses’ and no one comes after them. There is a free press where traitors such as Ranil W are free to concoct any tales he wishes and publish in the news papers most of which he owns.
    3. In Malaysia the Malays have all the rights since they have the Bhumiputra laws. The Tamils have to keep quiet and take it. Even though they are a bigger percentage of the population than in Sri Lanka they have only a few rights. If you like Singapore and Malaysia why not move there? All the Tamils want to come to Sri Lanka, why because the Sinhalese are so kind.
    4. If we did not have a 30 year war which was for a meaningless cause killing over 60,000 people by your Sun Goat, in Sri Lanka would have surpassed Singapore and Malaysia long ago. Just look at the development achieved by Mahinda Rajapakse in less than two years. The 1983 riots were orchestrated by then Tamil leaders for their political gain.
    5. In India about a 1/4 of the parliament are ex-jail birds. How is that for a record? If things are salubrious in Tamil Nadu why is that low caste poor Tamils keep fleeing Tamil Nadu to go to Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Australia, Canada etc. Tamil Nadu means Tamil homeland. Why not go back to your homeland?
6.Since the majority of the people are Sinhalese we have every right to put up statues of Dutugemunu every where if we so please. It should not be in cardboard but in bronze or in stone to last a long time to remind our people of our great heroes.

  22. AnuD Says:

I think, Arrogance in the case of Duminda Silva’s case may be because some other thing may have gone wrong.

    I suspect that too.

  23. Lorenzo Says:

    Radha,

It is not confined to the few people at the top. It is the same in the opposition and worse in certain other countries.

e.g. Pakistan, Saudi, Syria, Egypt, Iran, etc.

If we have that stupid approach we have to get rid of all the men (and women too) who rule and will rule SL because from JR to RP to CBK to MR there is no difference. There are no BETTER people to rule SL. This is the truth. We cannot have middle eastern barbarians, Hindutva arsonists, British, etc. colonialists, Russian communists, Israeli Zionists, etc. to run this country. We have to run the country with the people and their elected representatives.

To do that we need a better system – mainly a better constitution that takes away the executive presidency.

All the individuals who became executive presidents were very humane people before!

    Remember?

People LOVED Premadasa actually when he was the PM, until they hated him and ran away from him later.

CBK was so people friendly that they forgive her lateness, abusive language, etc. but after becoming president she changed to become a total b*

MR was a human rights activist before becoming the president!

It is the system that made them that. Not only in SL but also in the USA and Russia – 2 other countries with executive presidents. Take the cases of Bushs, Obama, Putin. They do whatever they want with 100% immunity for them and those who do things upon their support. Same thing. So it is the system that need changing.

Their henchmen OBTAIN immunity from them who in turn get it from the system.

When there was no executive presidency, the level of political violence was much less.

Malaysia is a repressive country where middle eastern barbarianism is now creeping in. Only a few UNA family members run it since independence! Those open their mouths gets fabricated charges and thrown in prison. Malaysia’s majority gets SUPER benefits thanks to POSITIVE DISCRIMINATION favouring the majority.

Are you happy to have the same law – Boomiputra Law in SL – no need to change the name either?

Are you insane Radha to hail Singapore and at the same time criticise dynastic rule in SL, unless you have gained personal wealth in Singapore’s notorious district!

FYI, Singapore is still under LKY since 1965, his family friend and his son!! Even regulatory top heads were hand picked by LKY who are SL Tamils illegal immigrants who would do as told for money, faithfully. Imagine that in SL? Unimaginable to me.

I’m intrigued by your comments about the Great King Dutugemunu. We should have his statutes in every town, I think.

And yes, we should go BACK to his era of Buddhist “dasarajya darma” governance structure while advancing technologically and economically as suited to the 21st century.

Don’t judge the Great King Dutugemunu by Mervyn Silva’s cheap attempted mimics.

  24. Lorenzo Says:

BTW even Mervyn Silva has done some good things for a change. He saved animals from ILLEGAL and BARBARIC needless torture recently.

    1. If the ILLEGAL BARBARIANS who habitually torture animals and needlessly kill them in Munneswaram rule, then it will be much worse than now.

Now every once in a while a MP goes on rampage killing people. If the above group comes to power that will be a DAILY occurrence. And they will call it religious sacrifice to goddess Dwarka!!!

    2. Or if the UNCIVILISED BARBARIANS who chopped a police officer calling him a grease devil in Puttlam recently rule the country, it will be even worse. They will chop people, stone people, cut people’s organs, etc. EVERY DAY. And call it religion.

  25. Dham Says:

    Lorenzo,
I know you did not mean Gon Silva. But to me Mr. Gon Silva is in the same category as Mervyn, Duminda because he belives in “survival of the fittest” and western values only.
To Gon Silva only materilism makes heaven. Strive to become another UK is his theme.
My theme is to hell with money Sir lanaka should remain Sri lanka. Gon Silvas who do not belive in our values are frre to migrate. So he should shut up and be faithful to his contry rather than attacking Buddhism like the fool he always has been.

  26. Lorenzo Says:

Ministry of Defence and Urban Development

    http://www.defence.lk/english.asp

    Well done!

Now the joker who became mayor will be either a mare or an ass driven by a good driver. It doesn’t matter it is a mare or an ass. The driver will ensure it runs as fast as it can or get a new ass to run according to the driver.

  27. Ben_silva Says:

Well said Lorenzo, you have understood the threats we face. Dumb Dham says ‘to hell with money, be less competitive, earn less and die Buddhist’. He should certainly listen to Pirith to calm himself. Where would it lead us if we follow Dumb Dham ?

  28. Fran Diaz Says:

If we take a close look at the Democratic System & the Money System we have at present in Lanka, it is Democracy with an overlay of Capitalism mitigated by Socialism. The emphasis is on the Money/Capitalism by some in our society. Money making is alright if it is done legally, with checks & balances and some ethics & morality, with taxes paid. However, look at the human emotions caused by SHOW of money by some – it creates envy & jealousy in others. Most of our citizenry are ordinary folks who have no talent as such for entrepreneurship or ability to gain professional qualifications. Fortunately, most of the people who are not entrepreneurs or professionals are NOT envious or jealous. This is where the practice of the Core Teachings of religion comes in. However, some of them will stoop to unscrupulous methods to make money through sale of dangerous drugs, cheating, posses illegal weapons, etc. Hasn’t Pres.MR tried to re-hab some of these people ? Surely, Duminda et al must have cut their thuggery teeth way before Pres.MR or Gota came into their life ?
Changing the rules of governance within the Democratic System as suggested by Dr Sudath Gunasekara will surely help to have power to the people more evenly distributed and independent of political parties. Then the focus will be on the welfare of the People & the Country and not on political parties which compete for power with resultant harm on society.

  29. douglas Says:

Thank you all. I must say that my contribution was not thought provoking, because many of the comments were to attack each other than to contribute to a burning problem that Sri Lanaka is facing today. I expected to get the participation of all to propose and bring about public awareness and awakening to help our Big Powers to bring home the feelings of good governance. Unfortunately that did not appear to be the case, in that , I too (as pointed out by RanjitS) to be blamed to little a extent. In my remark, as regards the Blessings of the Tripple Gem and Pirith chanting and starting the day at 4.00 a.m. created lot of “anger” and distraction. I never meant to hurt anyone’s feelings or discredit the system. If I did, I am sorry. What I had in mind was “when the people do not follow the Dhamma which is included and recited in Prith, what blessings it could generate. This was a question generated in my mind in relation to the incidents (killings, rapes, use of drugs etc) that are taking place in my country, even in the remotest villages. As pointed out by Dham, those who follow the “Dhamma” will alway be blessed. No doubt about it.

Thank you Ranjiths – You at least tried to direct the discussion in its intended proper direction, but many could not get hold of it. Therefore, in general, I feel (pl. note my personal opinion) that we Sri Lankans who love the country must be more capable and effective in discussions of subjects of this magnitude in a more constructive manner and create awareness to generate a public opinion to guide the Governing Authorities to do what is right for the common good of people and the country, but not to bring douwn the Government.

We have come to a very critical stage. Please do not allow the history to repeat. We have seen in our history how sons killed fathers and brothers killed brothers to capture the kingdoms. Even the last king of Sri Lanka was betrayed and taken away by foreigners like a dog. Such processes are available at present in “World Criminal Coourts” set upto haul world leaders and put them behind bars for life. So many (local and foreign) are very active in that process. If we go on at this rate, it is no wonder if that too happens. We also, during our life time saw how a President ascended power, coming from small beginnings and perished on a public road.

So please be very responsible and discuss issues in a broader perspective to bring awareness among the public so that they can participate in guiding our Big Powers in the correct path leading to peace and prosperity.

Also it is imperative that the “Powers” in power too get the feel of the pulses and take corrective measures without delay. So let us get involved in a more constructive manner to usher in a good future for our mother country – Sri Lanka.

    Douglas,

“they can participate in guiding our Big Powers in the correct path leading to peace and prosperity.”

    Exactly.

    We already see results.
