Traffic cop or traffic lights not both please!
Posted on December 23rd, 2011

By Dr. Mrs. Mareena Thaha Reffai, Dehiwela.

Yesterday while I was driving to Wellawathe from Dehiwela a traffic cop at the Ramakrishna road junction traffic lights asked us the motorists to drive on while the light was red, as there were no vehicles coming from Ramakrishna road. What he forgot was that the oncoming vehicles from Wellawathe towards Dehiwela still see the green light for them to proceed, and that includes the ones taking u turn too. When I drove on a small boy on a bicycle who was watching the lights took a u turn and a horrible accident was averted in the nick of the time.

We must have either the traffic lights to obey or the traffic cops when both are giving contradicting signals such accidents are possible. If a traffic cop does want to show his power let them put off the traffic lights so that we can obey their ruling!

Traffic cops come to color lights when there is a serious congestion problem. You should use your common sense to figure out that when traffic cops are there, they are there to override the color lights.

Well you should also be grateful for being in Sri Lanka where anyone over 18 who is physically fit and mentally capable can drive. Had you been in Saudi Arabia (where Rizana Nawfeek is wrongfully convicted and awaiting execution) the nation to whom you are loyal would you be able to drive? Let alone rant like this?

Come on, Mareena, what is this? You live in Dehiwala, and you earn your money at Wellawatta Delmon Hospital, and how much you charge per person? Are you paying tax on that?

That is good the accident was avoided.

Otherwise Tamilnet headline would read as “Genocidal SL police and Taliban kill Ezham Tamil boys”.

    Mjaya,

In Saudi they drive on the RIGHT HAND side. That is the confusion!

I just came after visiting Qatar. There were many traffic lights there but policemen stopped all car for 10 minutes to let the Royals go. No compalin there. Complaints will not live long in Arabarbaric countries.

Well done Mareena for avoiding an accident, a big one!. You must be a really good driver. How about taking part in night races.

This has been the practice in Sri Lanka more than a decade. S L cops like to be smart in thies situations. You are fortunate to avoid bad happaning. They create extra traffic lanes and signal to drive fast than designated speeds looks like they doing exrta but if small acc’ create more delays. More than that creates a feeling of changing the LAW to make things quicker is acceptable, or lawful. this is why no one want to stop at crossing lines., school crossings…etc. Sri Lankans LIve on luck not on systems or law
