“Country name change”

The recent post in Lankaweb on country name change highlighted by Lorenzo and supported by Prof. Hudson surely brings fresh breeze of rationality and logic. As a contribution to this vital topic more thoughts will not go amiss.

Name of a country directly bears the name of the National Land Deed declaring National Ownership to a particular country, similar to a personal property deed which must state the true name of owner. In brief, Lanka is a pseudonym adopted by the early Indian poets to distinguish the islands beauty and it is the derivative of the Indian word ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-alankaarƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚. In pre-historic origin, the island was named as Heladiva (island of Helas). Hela means people of the Sun as sun is the life giver. Later, with the intrusion of Indian Vijaya, Hela was coined with Sin to Sin+Hela or Sinhela, which later became Sinhala for easier pronunciation.

Indeed, if the name of the country had been Heladiva or at least Sinhale, the ongoing conflict situation would never have arisen. In fact, rather than ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-country name changeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ it should be the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-correction of country nameƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚. In correcting, there is much protection in defending its National Sovereignty by reverting to its original name Heladiva. Because Heladiva means the WHOLE island but Sinhale could face threats from fraudsters limiting only to the southern parts of the Island Country. Hence, much sense in the wisdom of our ancestors to name it Heladiva, which is up- to- date in facing the current threats.

When it comes to Language, it is precise to say that language is the backbone of a Nation & Country, which binds not only the nation INCLUSIVE of all its communities together but in turn links to the country in unitary state. But within this artificial Srilankan nation, unlike in any other national country not only the non indigenous Tamil language is constitutionally recognised but the non indigenous Muslim minority too is legally recognised including polygamy like in a Muslim country. Such a paradigm is only justifiable if the Island is inhabited by only settlers from other lands, marginalising the islandƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s only Nation of Hela/Sinhela as a mere ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-majorityƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ in grossly violating the Indigenous Hela/Sinhela NationƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s inalienable and inviolable national sovereignty in their only national motherland.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  National Sovereignty is also the fundamental human right of a nation of people ONLY in their indigenous land. Even in settlers countries like Americas, Australia, Canada, New Zealand nations are unitary and unambiguous.

It is elementary to realise that when a country is made multilingual by law, the people naturally tend to separate according to their languages as ONE language is the only unifying factor to hold the nation together irrespective of their race.

One vital clarification is required between Nation and Race where the people in the nicknamed island of SL have got it completely wrong. Nation is a mindset whereas race points to blood and gene. However, the origin of nation is an indigenous race, which has evolved into a nation INCLUSIVE of all minorities who came to settle in the host country, leaving their lands of national origins elsewhere. This shows that in almost every national society in every country is broadly multicultural in nature but NOT officially multicultural like in SL. This multicultural nonsense within the Island has created Tamil apartheid! As Paul Harris the investigative journalist once stated in Colombo during RanilƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s premiership that ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-it is the greatest giveaway in historyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ referring to bending over to Tamil terrorists. Diversity and multiculturalism should prevail officially among different countries of the world but NEVER within ONE country like in SL. World will be a much better place if we follow the old saying when in Rome do as the Romans. Recently, watching an old Western called The Unforgiven, where a Red Indian girl-child brought up by white people as white was exposed and everyone got upset including the now grown up native Indian child. Immediately after this revelation, Indians started to attack the whites in order to take away their blood sister into their community. The girl wanted to join the Indians but her brother acted by Burt Lancaster stopped her and gave a gun to shoot the Indians. She refused to shoot her own blood to which Burt L. replied it is only blood and her present mindset emerged as reality.

    Absolutely!

    Sinhala INCLUDES Tamils, Muslims, etc.

Look at Obama. Though he is an African American by looks, he was brought up by his someone who was a white American with white American values. He is a bigger Bush than Bush himself!!!

If Obama tried to speak in Kenyan language in USA or demand African American aspirations, he would be long dead by now. Instead he chose to EXPAND American imperialism of which African Americans were VICTIMS!!

Good on you Obama. We need Tamils to become like Obama. GIVE UP Tamil Nadu identity and adopt Singhale identity.

  2. Dilrook Says:

Heladiva is just one name. Silan & Deepa became Serendib. That’s how Arabs called it.

Europeans called it Ceylon and the people Ceylonese pronounced as Silaneese. Natives were also called Sinhalese pronounced Sinaleese. It is not difficult to see the similarity between Silaneese and Sinaleese.

Chienese called it Sinhale (Fa Hein).

Indian texts referred to it as Sihala Dwipa.

All these indicate the names connected to Sinhala was for the entire island and not parts thereof.
