Fonseka’s rally to re-launch his political career !

P.A.Samaraweera, Melbourne

The former Army Commander, Sarath Fonseka, along with the National Bhikku Front is to hold a rally on the 18th Oct. According to the organisers the main reason for this exercise is to re-launch Fonseka’s political career. The major opposition party, the UNP, is not attending. ButƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ UNP ‘reformists ‘are . At the moment, the UNP is not coming under one umbrella. The same could be said with the JVP. Though the UNP reformists are attending the Fonseka rally, Sajith, the leader of the reformists is on the fence. So the National Bhikku Front and Fonseka accuses him of playing a double game. On the other hand, the UNP Working Committee whichƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ had unanimously decided not to attend the rally had threatened to suspend UNP parliamentarians who defy.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Nothing is heard from the TNA about this rally. Obviously, they are waiting for instructions from their God Fathers in Tamil Nadu and New Delhi !

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The UNP is accusing Fonseka of breaking up the opposition by having this rally. According to them, Fonseka had turned down a joint opposition rally proposed by the UNP some time back . Therefore, the decision made byƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the UNP could be a tit for tat.

May be, Ranil feels that this rally is a stepping stone for Fonseka to be promoted as the next Presidential candidate. So obviously, Ranil wants his parliamentarians to keep away from the rally. The UNP is nowƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ reaping what they sow during the war.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ They aligned with pro-terror groups to give a life-line to the LTTE.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Then, the organisers of the rally also claim that they are canvassing for the abolition of executive Presidency. To take a hypothetical case,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  if Ranil or Fonseka becomes President, will they ever abolish executive Presidency ? Never. AllƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the noise they make is only an eye-wash.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ With the rally, there are now more cracks in the opposition.

    SF + NBF !

If they shout to SCRAP 13 amendment, I support them.

SF can’t run for next presidential election in 3 years. What he can do is run a campaign to boycott the election.

  2. nandimitra Says:

It is time we have a parliament led by one party and the president from another party. Parliament then can amend the constitution to benefit the country and the president will not be able to change the constitution to benefit him or her.

  3. crobe Says:

Ranil is a fool(this is not breaking news). Ranil should have joined hands with SF and NBF and the rest of the losers and kept on harping for a common candidate. Remember, SF cant run for presidency at the next presidential election, so the most likely candidate would have been Ranil. Then, Ranil could make all the promises to the common opposition and not kept them just the way SF would have done had he won.

  4. Dham Says:

SF is the yankee agent in Sri lanka. He is only second to Prabhakaran.
He calimed he is “the people’s president”.
May be “zionist people’s president in waiting”.
If USA arrange a revolution, Fonseka will lead it. He will be the puppet.

What “Political Career” for Sarath Fonseka, the man who threw his Motherland to the wolves for political gain!

He should run for office in the United States to which he sold his allegiance; not in Sri Lanka.

We will NEVER FORGET what he did. Even today Sri Lanka is suffering from his treachery.

  6. ranjit Says:

We can call him also a war hero because he was also responsible for the downfall of L.T.T.E and the death of the most ruthless murderer Velupillai Prabakaran. This guy don’t have any vision or new ideas except he is a revengful and a zero political experience person. I thought he will retire from everything and live like a true General after he was released from prison by the President but no way he will stay put like a Gentleman but like to come to do politics by day dreaming to become the President of Sri Lanka. This ungreatful war hero cum General must stop his dirty games jumping from one politically bankcrupt group to another and bring disunity among our peoples. For God sake General go home and look after your power hungry family and read ” WAR & PEACE” and relax until you say GOOD BYE to this world.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is well seasoned politician. He know the correct time to move to cards. Before Provincial councils elections he got down “Kapila Wasthu” from India show and got the support of people. There are so many Lord Buddha’s Dhathu in Sri Lanka in several Temples. One and only Sacred Tooth relic for the whole word is in Kandy I cannot understand why this not been shown regularly. But Sacred Tooth relic will show only to VIP not to ordinary people. Before dissolving the Parliament for next election MR will make sure 13 or 13A will be abolish. Then its sure win to the Govt and all opposition including SF can go to h..! with their rallies.

  8. Dham Says:

    Ranjit,
I am yet to convince that this brainless, brutal, selfish Gonseka had anything to contribute towards victory. I think it is others contributions he want’s to take credit for.

  9. Fran Diaz Says:

Do Sri Lankans know their Democratic norms ?

In advanced Democracies, any General of an army straight out of a war will NEVER run for any public office for a number of years till after a war. Such a person is still in hyper ‘battle mode” and not in “public service mode”. Sri Lanka ought to add that part to our Constitution, i.e. that none of the leaders of the Armed forces should run for public office for at least 5 yrs after a war.

Also, the public must be well aware of the background of the people they choose/vote for public office. Ultimately, in a democracy it the People who must hold themselves responsible for what happens in their democracy.

  10. Vis8 Says:

The real Fonseka has been found out even by the UNP. Everyone’s shunning him, except those hell-bent of discrediting the Rajapaksas, those who only talk big trash. Fonseka is going to make a big fool of himself.

  11. Raj Says:

As Dham says, he is a yankee agent. Just after the war he visited USA and Blake met him. The following day he goes to a temple there and tells that he may come to politics. Is there anyone who cannot see what happened in that meeting with Blake.
What ever some people say we must show gratitude to the president for being able to fight the mighty west, in a democratic way. Anyone else would have been trampled upon and thrown out a long time ago, by the west.

  12. Lorenzo Says:

SF’s rally was a total FLOP!!!

It was not about the country but about his selfish GRIEVANCES.

Even JVP, Arjuna, Tiran had boycotted it.

Better for him to have remained in prison. At least he had MORE politicians visiting him then than now.

    Good strategy of handling him.

From hero to zero!!! Now going negative.

In my mind, Sarath Fonseka of Sri Lanka is the Benedict Arnold of the United States. Initially a son of the American Revolution, his name today in America is synonymous with TREASON and BETRAYAL.

For those of you who don’t know who Benedict Arnold was, here is a brief summary. Benedict Arnold was a General in the Continental Army that was fighting the British Army in the American War of Independence. He was talented man of war. He captured Fort Ticonderoga in 1775, fought well in the Battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain in 1776, relieved the Siege of Fort Stanwix also in 1776, and was instrumental to the key American victory in the Battles of Saratoga in 1777.

Although successful in war, Arnold was passed over for promotion by the Continental Congress, and others were given credit for some of his successes. Although he was accused of corruption by his detractors, he reputedly spent some of his own money to support his troops. He felt particularly unappreciated by George Washington, the Commander in Chief of the American Army. Therefore, he defected to the British Army in 1779, in return for a commission in the British Army, and power and prestige as a British subject in America when the Americans were defeated by the British. He conspired to hand over Fort West Point that he was in command of to the British. Later, when his plot to enable the British to capture George Washington was exposed, he fled to the British, while his American and British collaborators were captured and hanged by the Revolutionaries.

Arnold was then commissioned as a brigadier general in the British Army, with an annual pension of £360, and a lump sum payment of over £6,000, a princely sum in those days. Thereafter, he commanded British troops on raids in Virginia and Connecticut, and nearly captured Thomas Jefferson, before the war ended with the American victory with French naval aid at Yorktown. In 1782, Arnold moved to London and was well received and treated by the British, including the german-born King George III. In 1787, he became a businessman in New Brunswick, Canada but settled permanently in London 1791, and where he died in 1801.

For his TREASON against his Motherland his name remains etched in the history of the United States as a mark of INFAMY. To be called a Benedict Arnold in the US is as low as you can go in the US. It is synonymous with being called a Quisling in Norway.

Sarath Fonseka, like Benedict Arnold, is flawed in CHARACTER, and lost his ethical and moral compass. Of UNBOUNDED Ambition, UNLIMITED in Greed for Recognition, Wealth and Prestige he quickly forget who befriended him and ENABLED him, frustrated previously by less able pusillanimous Presidents, to succeed with honor in his military profession. Ultimately, like Benedict Arnold, he lost sight of his unwavering duty to his country and his people, and placed them in mortal jeopardy.

Now Sarath Fonseka, tries to resurrect his former glory and honor through deceit and artifice … IN VAIN … for it is without admitting his grievous errors, and begging for forgiveness from the Sri Lankan people. Still blind, this man will never recognize that a cry of “Mea Culpa” is the curative but bitter medicine that he must imbibe.

Today, Sarath Fonseka, the former war hero, is A MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRY, for having abandoned his DUTY he is bereft of all that matters in this life: his HONOR.

For those of us who revelled in his success in our patriotic war, and cheered him on as our great hero, the disillusion, disappointment, and yes … sorrow … is palpable. We grieve, but we are firm in our judgment of him.

Such is the PRICE one pays for the lack of a MORAL CHARACTER to restrain UNBOUNDED AMBITION, an INGREDIENT ESSENTIAL in the military above all other professions.

  14. Dham Says:

    Ananda,
There is no person that exists, it the power of the mind which created a hero and it is the power of lust and greed that created Ponseka of today. Nothing is permanent. In a matter of time maharaja too will become baluraja, unless too much greed is given up and love-compassion is discovered.

  15. Nimal Says:

JVP should stay well clear of him.He is an army man but not a politican to start with.

FINALLY! Much needed Legislation to monitor and control NGOs activities thatare INIMICAL to Sri Lanka.

We have DEMANDED such Laws for a LONG TIME.

Expect FIERCE OPPOSITION from Foreign Powers trying to control, undermine and destabilize Sri Lanka.

    …….
Sri Lanka to bring legislation to monitor NGOs

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 18, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government plans to bring in legislation to monitor the activities of the numerous voluntary organizations in the country, a government official has said.

Director General of the Media Center for National Security (MCNS) Lakshman Hulugalla has said that a program has been launched to take action against the organizations which are engaged in activities against the interests of the country.

Hulugalla, participating in a discussion programme at the state-run radio Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, has said that several voluntary organizations engaged in numerous forms of irregularities have recently been identified and a new legislation has been drafted to take proper action against them since the existing legislations are inadequate.

Following the approval of the new legislation in the parliament it would be possible to monitor the activities of all the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) island wide, the Director General of MCNS has said.

He has pointed out that many NGOs in the North and the East in the recent past had encouraged the activities of the terrorist organization LTTE.

The official has further said that the government is prepared to identify and assist voluntary organizations engaged in providing services beneficial to the country and the people.

The government had decided to amend the existing Act which deals with both local and foreign NGOs to enable the government to probe their activities and take appropriate action against them wherever it is necessary.

  17. Christie Says:

Sad to see fighting among the majority of the island, that started with SWRD in 1951.

What we need is unity among the majority wiuth one voice, that will bring prosperity and peace to all of us.
