Buddhist Sri Lanka set to face another threat by Wahhabi extremism

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ LTTE extremism did not spring without a plan. Successive Governments did err and Tamil leaders stand guilty of misleading the Tamil people and tragically continuing to do so. Tamil civilians have helped little by maintaining their silence over the years ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” that was how Sri Lanka suffered 30 years of terror. That mistake should not be repeated. Previously it was terrorism of a cult kind ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” this time it is likely to lead to terrorism in religious camouflage that will rip apart the entire country unless we read the warnings and take appropriate actions ever mindful that these are all engineered to destabilize nations and disintegrate and divide the people. The Tamil people and the Sinhalese were not aware of the global dynamics that exist in the formulas used to divide nations ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” today we are more aware which necessitates the need to remember how historically the people have been welcomed by the majority race that today comprise over 74% following Buddhism since 4th BCE which is nothing anyone should take offence when the country is referred to as Buddhist as enshrined in the Constitution of Sri Lanka.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Whatever governs the teachings, practices or behaviors of Wahhabism what we know from history is that it has been associated with vandalism and destruction of Islamic heritage. It is nothing anyone can deny or raise fury over ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” the examples are many, the damage to Saudi houses and mosques associated with Prophet Mohammed and family, raids on ShiƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢a cities of Karbala and Najaf and the destructions in North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Pakistan, the Balkans, Egypt, Libya, Mali where Wahhabi groups destroyed Sufi shrines, mausoleums, cemeteries of Timbuktu ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” a UNESCO World Heritage site as well as the inhuman manner in which the Bamiyan Buddha was destroyed in Afghanistan.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In all international forums the subject of religious tolerance is given prominence ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” never answered is why majority Muslim nations do not allow a single religious activity to be practiced, a sale or display of a single non-Islamic religious idol whilst it becomes Muslim right to practice their faith and erect anything to promote that faith in non-Muslim nations. If many are not aware there are over 25,000 Jews that live in Iran and they have over 30 synagogues to pray in while in Libya there were churches which have now been destroyed during the conflict and Libya was one country that did not force women to wear the Abaya or followed Wahhabi Sharia laws.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ So the question is why do Muslims tolerate Wahhabism founded in the 18th century which is demolishing not only Islamic monuments, destroying Islamic culture and traditions that date back to 14th century as well as watching these militias destroy entire nations and their people? Is the House of Saud so powerful and above the will of the 1.5billion Muslim people of the world though we are well aware of their ties to the US and British allies and do those links connect to the crisis that prevails in Syria, Iran ultimately targeted at Russia and China? Perhaps the Muslim people themselves should read and find out how much of Prophet MohammadƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s history has been wiped out thus far though ironically Wahhabism is the official religion of Saudi which controls Mecca, Medina and Hijaz.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Muslims

The Muslims arrived in Sri Lanka as traders of East-West trade. It was during the 9th and 10th centuries that Muslims appeared to have settled in coastal cities of Sri Lanka. There is also the links between Muslims of Sri Lanka and MaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢bar from which Arabic-Tamil emerged as a common language form (Muslims Arabicising the Tamil script). The Muslims of Sri Lanka are close to Sufis in culture and religion and the Shafi school of Thought. The Portuguese destroyed whatever mosques were built by Muslims. It was King Senerath, who in 1626 settled nearly 4,000 Muslims in the East of Sri Lanka following their expulsion from the islandƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Western coastal belt by the Portuguese.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The Sufi Islamic movement has been part of South Asia for centuries whereas the Wahhabi ideology arrived to Sri Lanka in 1940s but was rejected by Sri Lankan Muslims until petro dollars from 1970 onwards has increased Wahhabi jihadism in Sri Lanka.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Unknown to Muslims, the peaceful Islamic community that once lived with the saree covering the head is today in full black attire because that is what is being taught and promoted as the right thing to do.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Large donations, material benefits have become easy ways to convert moderates into fundamentalists and these cash donations are doing the same wonders that enabled the LTTE to buy over even State officials as is evident from the language used as official statements.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ LTTE made $300m profit annually but Sri Lanka is dealing with a financing giant throwing close to $90BILLION annually to spread the Wahhabi fundamentalism worldwide working in unison with the worldƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s most notorious intelligence outfit. It is Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s punishment for ties with Iran. Muslim-Muslim clashes will reveal that it is nothing other than Sufis and Wahhabis clashing over beliefs with Sufis often falling victims. Today Kattankudy is not Sri Lankan soil but self-declared Wahhabi soil with no Sufi is allowed to be buried there. The Muslims of Sri Lanka, the kind that many remember ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” so different to Muslims in other countries are today a subdued community because of Wahhabism. Just as all Tamils are not LTTErs we must note that all Muslims are not Wahhabi fundamentalists. Tamil leaders followed LTTE because they thought they could fast forward Eelaam in Sri Lanka towards the greater Dravidistan with India through Prabakaran. The agenda of Wahhabi is simply to throw nations upside down in turmoil. How many of Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Muslim leaders or even Sinhalese leaders have fallen prey to the Billion coffer?

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Let not what happened in Libya, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia and many other nations happen to Buddhist Sri Lanka. Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s leaders need to seriously take stock of the situation ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” we are talking about the future of an entire country and its peoples who are all under threat and it is far graver than India. We are well aware that the West attempted and failed with LTTE but through injecting Wahhabi followers the West stands to upset Sri Lanka in a far more powerful way ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” we just need to look at the state of affairs in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India to realize the gravity.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ For the Sinhalese, Sri Lanka is their land of birth and heritage ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” there are no Sinhalese anywhere in the world. Buddhism is the language of that majority people and it is a religion that they have protected with sanctity and which currently rouses concern and harkens to make people unaware aware of the dangers that loom. Bodhi poojas and other merits alone will not suffice to protect Buddhism. We cannot be taken to another phase of conflict one in which we know we can never be a victor. Bangladesh and Maldives were once Buddhist nations ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Burma/Myanmar had only Buddhists ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” today even Buddhist monuments, priests and historical artifacts are not spared in these nations. To everything there has to be reciprocation and we cannot see that with Islamic dominated nations where Wahhabism reigns. If the Sufi Muslims of Sri Lanka are being hounded and victimized we can only imagine the fate of the rest of the people in Sri Lanka with time and that time is never stretched to decades which is what spells the greater tragedy that needs to be addressed forsaking funds that will only advance that doom.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Our leaders erred in many ways dealing with the LTTE and Tamil leadership over decades, our leaders at most times compromised the rights and freedoms of the Sinhalese and in particular the Buddhists making us to continue to wonder what or who remains the custodian of the nation and the Buddhist religion. Having allowed a greater danger to now enter and take root expanding gradually in militant style fundamentalism we can only say we do not want to have to experience what the Burmese Buddhists are going through now and no Buddhist prelate should have to give his throat to save our people.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Buddhism is the only non-violent religion spreading a philosophy that requires no one to convert to follow. Buddhism existed far beyond all of the religions that exist today ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Sri Lanka has proudly continued to protect Buddhism and will continue to unite all Buddhist nations together in common unity while all other communities that respect that place are welcome but Sri Lanka says a big no to any forms of fundamentalism and our leaders must now wake up from their slumber. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Let the Muslim civilians not be misled as the Tamil civilians had been. Let the Muslim leaders not follow the path of the pro-LTTE TNA and let the Government not do the mistakes committed by previous Governments.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Buddhist Asia needs to launch inquiry

It is not too late for the Buddhist nations of Asia to inquire how and why once Buddhist nations fell to the sword of Islam causing most to abandon Buddhism. To IndiaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s defense we must mention that it embraced Hinduism having realized the steel must be met with steel and compassionate Buddhism did not offer the answer. Nevertheless India lost many ancient monuments to Islamic vandalism and India is facing enormous divisions not made easy by the unjust bargaining trends from its federal states ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” a path Sri Lanka does not want to take applying similar federal option.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In the last 1000 years the Buddhists have been losing the territory that had been part and parcel of their cultural heritage. Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Maldives all used to be Buddhist countries but now Muslim. Why is this marginalization and loss of Buddhist territory not taken up on any international platform? Why should the Buddhist world not rise together and demand their rights that are far historical than any other. We are today being dictated by human rights slogans that have come into place during the past several decades totally ignoring the ancient rights of Buddhists or compromising the territory that was once Buddhist.

Why are these same slogans not questioning animal sacrifice where globally 100m animals are sacrificed within 2 days and the West remains mum because of its sale of animals for slaughter ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” animal sacrifice is totally against Lord Buddhas teaching? Economics and Trade win the day.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Unlike the West ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” ours is a country rich in culture, with an ancient heritage and man-made ancient engineering works found in no other civilization ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” the efforts of the Sinhala kings remain a marvel even today ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” it is for these reasons that we need to preserve and protect what other nations envy. Multiculturalism is for countries without long histories or significant ancient cultures.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ If for Muslims Umma means uniting to protect all Muslims, Christians unite to protect Christians, Catholics do the same, Hindus too then it is time Buddhists do not stand in isolation. There are Buddhists today spreading West to East and they must all be united and that start should be launched by first securing the safety of the Asia region which is today under threat because the ultimate goal is to attack China ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” it is for China and Japan to unite the Buddhists and for Sri Lanka to take a main lead.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Let us not behave like ostriches anymore! Buddhism cannot be betrayed for money.

“To India’s defense we must mention that it embraced Hinduism having realized the steel must be met with steel and compassionate Buddhism did not offer the answer. ”

This the most foolish statement. (Same sentiment was made by the late Ben Silva).

Now, HussainAppuhamy may jump immediately with the excuse of CONTEXT but whatever the context such statement shall be avoided. Read no further, this statement is venom against Budhism.

Why ? I need not explain. Compassion is the easiest to develop out of 4 brahmaviharas. “Mudita” is such a beautiful quality I am unable to explain, has no chance if compassion is not there. While the 4 brahmaviharas are not the “core” of Buddhist teaching, yet attack on compassion shows how foolish this writer is.

Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism and even Islam all have compassion as a quality to develop. It is the lack of compassion that makes this world an ugly place.
Hinduism surely is the origin of 4 brahmaviharas which Buddha continued. How can Hinuds have no compassion.
Shenali , please attack all religions, but do not attack devine abidings, the keys to humanity.
Avoid going to Hell , even if you are an Athiest , just in case a drop of compassion exists in the corner of a heart.

  2. Dham Says:

“If for Muslims Umma means uniting to protect all Muslims, Christians unite to protect Christians, Catholics do the same, Hindus too then it is time Buddhists do not stand in isolation. ”

Well, Buddhist unite humanity – not a particular religion. If you don’t like it, please embrace any other religion of your choice.

I am sure LOrenZion , will come out approving such nonsense, spreading hatred.

  3. nandimitra Says:

The arrogant sinhala rulers are to be blamed for this. all they care is to fill their pockets and saudi money is therefore worshipped. Today in colombo mosques are built every 2-3 miles , early morning call for prayer wakes up every body majority being non muslims. All this done with middle eastern money . What ever the reason the mosques far outstrip the needs for the number of muslims in the society and carries the risks of religious friction and destabilisation of the society. This is the price the sinhalese are paying for electing idiots to parliament. Dambulla , Dehiwala mosque issues are only a tip of the iceberg. The idiotic rulers are deaf and blind to the risks.

  4. Lorenzo Says:

    I agree with Nandimitra.

Money makes SL rulers forget EVERYTHING. They even export SL women to Saudi for money.

    This is disgraceful.

Wahabi threat is WORSE than or EQUAL to Tamil threat.

Dollars 90 billion for 200 countries = dollars 450 million for every country = in SL dollars 450 million to spread Wahabism and Satanislam

Tamil terrorists only had dollars 200 million!!!

    The threat is DOUBLE.

Wahabis are paid to write to SL forums, newspapers. We are very familiar with them. They get paid for every quote they write from Koran in Saudi Rials.

Now mosques are everydamnwhere. It is like a cancer. They have NO regard for people. They scream in ARABIC which is a very coarse language disturbing people of ALL religions.

We have been saying this for a long time. AT LAST some people take note of this threat.

    There are other related threats.

    1. Polygamy
    2. Female genital mutilation which is secretly done in SL Muslim GHETTOS in Akkaraipattu, Beruwelai, Maradana, Darga Town, etc.
    3. Lashing people based on Sharia law – cases reported in Kurunegala, Puttlam, Gampola, Slave Island, Potuvil

    This is a curse.

  5. Dham Says:

Fully agree with Lorenzion and nandimitra.

However, any action to alleviate these barbaric killers encroaching in to our society shall be done without attacking or blaming very principles of great religious values, especially blaming Buddhist principles.

It is not the principles of Buddhism that has caused these pathetic situation, it is going against them. It is basically the GREED of the Sinhala and non Sinhala politicians, government workers, doctors, engineers, academics and all.

If one blames Buddhism for that, it should not be allowed.

  6. Dham Says:

Female genital mutilation which is secretly done in India (worse than any other country) and also in Australia as reported in media recently. There are many peaceful Muslim leaders speaking publicly against it.
I did not see “the great Islamic peace lover ” HussainFahmy speaking against it yet.

  7. Dham Says:

If Shenali is a great Sinhala Buddhist, I humbly invite her to come out in public and apologise unconditionally for making the statement ““To India’s defence we must mention that it embraced Hinduism having realized the steel must be met with steel and compassionate Buddhism did not offer the answer. ”

I had so much faith in this writer and all that is shattered. The above statement implies a hidden agenda. There is no point asking us to read “IN CONTEXT” like the fool HussainFahmy.

  8. Piyadigama Says:

    What she says is right.

As Buddhists we must face reality without trying to hoodwink ourselves. All Buddhist nations are facing this challenge. I have extensively traveled in Buddhist countries including Bhutan, Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Tibet (now part of PRC), South Korea (unfortunately this Buddhist country is now like a Christian country) and Japan. This problem is all too visible. Except mountain locked Bhutan and Japan, all other Buddhist countries are in grave danger. Even in Bhutan, sectarian riots displaced Buddhist Bhutanese and Hindu Nepalese (they left to Nepal a few years ago).

Compassionate Buddhism has not faced ruthless threats well. We all see this.

Japan is a very good example of limiting compassion on national matters. Japan has restricted by law the practice and spread of Islam. Sri Lanka is encouraged to follow Japan, the most prosperous Buddhist country.

Those who use Buddhist concepts in their names and promote militaristic Buddhism of bashing those who write their opinions are doing more harm to Buddhism than outsiders. They are misplaced crusaders from the middle east who want to show to be Buddhists to get various economic benefits. Their conduct shows how Buddhists should not behave. If these people teach Buddhism to others, they are a threat to the Teachings by setting a very bad example.

  9. Voice123 Says:

Shenali, wake up and smell the roses. Japan’s religion is no longer Buddhism. (Buddhism was always viewed as a foreign religion and second to indigenous Shintoism anyway). It is to follow the latest fads and trends in America. Many Japanese worship Western culture and view Asian Buddhists as inferior to them. If they wanted, they could have spent enough money to counter the Saudis. China after Communism also feels no particular affinity with Buddhism. Even before that their culture is moulded by Confucianism and Daoism also. Buddhism is one of 3. If Chinese loved Buddhism, they wouldn’t be suppressing Buddhism in Tibet. Eg I was told Chinese teachers give assignment to Tibetan Buddhist children to kill an animal for homework so that they lose the Buddhist values. Sri Lankan Buddhists must face present day reality and act strategically but with reality in mind, not wishful thinking.

  10. Nalliah Thayabharan Says:

Quite early, the LTTE had joined hands with Radio Veritas (‘Truth Radio’), which is a Catholic oufit run by the Asian Bishops Council. The LTTE controlled VOT (‘Voice of Tiger’) quite established a coordinating office to tie up with Radio Veritas at St. Sebastian Church in Mallavi located between Mannar and Vavuniya

The strongest supporters of LTTE in Sri Lanka have always been the Tamil speaking Christian clergy– Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and evangelical. And as in the notorious fake ‘Church bombings’ in Karnataka a decade ago in which the christian propagandists took the help of the Islamist Deen Dar Anjuman, these Christian organizations have not hesitated to take the help of extreme terrorist Islamist outfits.

But Sri Lanka also counts 7% of its people as Muslims, and among them, as elsewhere throughout South Asia, the spiritual tradition of Sufism is vigorously present. After 1973, and the Arab oil embargo that enriched Saudi Arabia greatly, the ultra-fundamentalist Wahhabi sect, which is the official religious interpretation in the Saudi kingdom, began to penetrate Sri Lanka’s adherents to Islam. The Wahhabis in Sri Lanka act through a movement called Thawheed, or Monotheism. They opened numerous medresas. They despise Sufis.

The All Ceylon Thareekathul Mufliheen was founded in the late 1980s by Sheihul Mufliheen M.S.M. Abdullah, known as in the southeastern Sri Lanka village of Maruthamunai. It was registered as a cultural society with the civil authorities in 1989. The headquarters of Thareekathul Mufliheen is now located in the small eastern coast village of Kattankudy, which has 42 mosques. The order maintains branches around the island, and claims 15,000 members.

Thareekathul Mufliheen opened a Meditation Centre at Kattankudy in 1996. On May 29, 1996, at midnight Wahhabi arson struck the building. Sheihul Mufliheen M.S.M. Abdullah and the members of the order were targets of shooting and grenade attacks, and other physical aggression, as well as threats. Worse was to come. On October 31, 2004, at noon 500 Wahhabis organized under the title “Jihad” again set the Meditation Centre ablaze, destroying its library, along with homes and businesses owned by Sufis. Financial loss to the injured parties was considerable, and one Sufi was shot and killed while another was wounded by gunfire. Thareekathul Mufliheen’s president M.C.A. Hameed accused police of assisting the assailants. Eight alleged perpetrators were arrested, but were released on bail with no further consequences. A complaint was entered at Police Headquarters in Colombo in 2004, and a subsequent protest was filed with the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (HRC) in 2005.

The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission found in favor of the Sufis, stating that their constitutional right to adhere to the belief of their will and choice had been violated, and submitting recommendations for redress to the Inspector General of Police. But Thareekathul Mufliheen asserts, “Sadly, the Police were inactive in implementing these recommendations in an equitable manner.” Still, the Meditation Centre and headquarters were rebuilt and a birthday celebration for the founder of the order was held on July 25, 2006, with 15,000 people provided free food.

Sheihul Mufliheen M.S.M. Abdullah died on December 6, 2006. Wahhabi preachers from the Thawheed network and the armed “Jihad” incited the local clerics and politicians (Jamiathul Ulama Kattankudy, the Muslim Federation of Mosques, and the Urban Council of Kattankudy) to oppose his burial according to Islamic rites, in the Meditation Centre, as he was a supposed “apostate.” Another member of the Sufi order had died on December 1, 2006, was buried that day, and on December 2 was exhumed by Wahhabis on the same pretext and laid out on the soil. According to the Wahhabis and their accomplices, “apostates” could not be buried in Kattankudy.

The Jihadis, armed with lethal weapons, rioted after the death of Abdullah, bringing life in Kattankudy to a halt by a general work stoppage (hartal). Schools, government and private offices, banks and businesses shut down and some banks and shops were looted and burned. The official clerics of All Ceylon Jamiathul Ulama, Jamiathul Ulama Kattankudy, the Muslim Federation of Mosques, other Islamic organizations, and the Kattankudy Urban Council initiated a judicial argument on December 11, 2006. They denounced the interment of Abdullah as defying Muslim norms and traditions and charged that Thareekathul Mufliheen had failed to seek permission from the authorities for the burial. The petition by the official clerics and Wahhabis was dismissed in 2007.

But the Sri Lanka HRC declared in 2007 that it could not “interfere in the disputes between various sects of a religion” and recommended the conflict be referred to the Council of Ulemas – All Ceylon Jamiathul Ulama, or to the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

In a separate controversy, the Urban Council in Kattankudy had ordered the dismantling of the minaret at the Meditation Centre, as an “unauthorized structure,” in a decision announced on December 13, 2006. Police prevented commencement of the demolition, but Wahhabi fanatics interfered with the officers. Three rioters were shot and killed. A police post and police vehicle were assaulted. On December 15, 2006, nevertheless, members of the Urban Council joined a Wahhabi mob that invaded the Meditation Centre and knocked down the minaret, removing the body of Abdullah, either burning or reburying it in a location yet unknown. The houses of 117 Sufis were leveled by fire. Many were threatened and fled the district. Two were injured, and one lost an arm.

Evidence of persecution of Thareekathul Mufliheen was submitted to Asma Jahangir, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, during a visit she made to Sri Lanka. In her 2008 Report to the UN, the Special Rapporteur expressed “regrets that she has not received a reply from the Government of Sri Lanka” regarding the 2006 incidents. She affirmed that “the Government of Sri Lanka has to fulfill its positive obligation to protect the right to freedom of religion or belief of all its citizens… in most of the cases that have been brought to her attention… these obligations have not been satisfactorily fulfilled by the Government.”

The 2007 International Religious Freedom Report issued by the U.S. Department of State noted the Wahhabi interference with Thareekathul Mufliheen. Since then, however, abuses against the Sufis of Kattankudy have continued, with the Wahhabi Thawheed faction in the forefront of violence. Official ulema and the village authorities attempted unsuccessfully to prevent celebration of a Sufi festival in 2008. That year, a Sri Lanka Supreme Court order, providing that 200 members of Thareekathul Mufliheen be allowed to return to their homes in Kattankudy and practice their beliefs in freedom, was obstructed by armed Jihad members.

In February 2009 a 150-year old shrine was destroyed by Thawheed in the city of Ukuwela, in the central hill country of Sri Lanka. Conflict in July 2009 between Thawheed and the Qadiri Sufi order, in the southwestern town of Beruwala, led to two deaths, more than 40 people injured, and 132 arrests. The Qadiri devotees complained that the Wahhabi mosque in their town, named Masjidur Rahman (Mosque of the Merciful) had accused the Qadiris of the Bukhari Thakkiya mosque of being “qafirun” (“disbelievers” or “concealers of the truth”) continuously in the eight years since the Wahhabi mosque was inaugurated.

According to the Sri Lanka newspaper The Sunday Times of August 16, 2009, Muslim Home Guards recruited by the Sri Lankan government to fight the Tamil rebels had deserted with their weapons and joined Thawheed to fulfill its demand for “Jihad” against traditional Muslims. The newspaper described a significant influx of Wahhabi preachers and activists from south India and Saudi Arabia. Riyad S. Al-Khenene, counsellor of the Royal Saudi Embassy in Sri Lanka, denied that official Saudi support was granted to the Wahhabi interlopers, while admitting that “certain wealthy persons… are helping various religious groups in Sri Lanka to put up mosques. But this has nothing to do with the Government of Saudi Arabia,” Al-Khenene insisted.

In response to the campaign against it, Thareekathul Mufliheen has appealed to the Sri Lanka authorities for an impartial inquiry into Wahhabi activities in the country; to disarm the Wahhabis; to provide for reconstruction of the headquarters of Thareekathul Mufliheen in Kattankudy; to enforce the revocation of the fatwa issued by the All Ceylon Jamiathul Ulama against Abdullah (Rah) and his disciples, as ordered by the Colombo District Court, and to compensate the displaced Sufis, facilitating restoration of their lost heritage, ruined homes, and businesses. The Sufis of Kattankudy seek “peaceful resettlement with honor.”

Thareekathul Mufliheen defines itself as “a peace loving and non-violent Religious Society… The members have displayed their patience and tolerance even in times of grave injustice and calamity… The words of wisdom of our spiritual leader are to detest arms and adopt peaceful means to find a solution in a crisis situation.”

The Wahhabi, Deobandi, and Mawdudist jihad trends have revealed their ambition to control South Asian Islam through violence in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. In all these countries traditionalists resist them. The Sufis of Sri Lanka, although obscure to the rest of the world, deserve no less support than anti-radical Muslims elsewhere in the region and around the globe.

  11. HussainFahmy Says:

One should have an open Mind to sift the true message of Islam from the cultural practices. Example Female Genital Mutilation is originally from a North African cultural practice. It was never an Islamic injunction.

Islam in its essence promotes open borders. Discourages Ghettos. Border protection is recent and a nationalistic concept. Islam encourages free movement of people (Atheists and Theists) to live as people and to know and learn from each other and thus enrich their lives. With the advent of technology, Virtual borders are fast becoming a reality.

In Islam; Honour and Property are sacred. Faith is a personal choice and one should tolerate each others beliefs; whatever they may be. Islam prohibits coercion in all forms and destruction of all places of worship. Islam stands for Peace, Defense of Honour and Property. Those who violate these tenets are accountable.

Those who follow the true Message of Islam are known as MUSLIMS. Wahabi, Sufi, and some others are misnomers. In the Islamic history Wahabi, Sufi, and some others were mere Schools of Thought. All these Schools of Thought had only a perspective or an interpretation according to their understanding. Long after the Death of these Scholars; the followers created their own version with their political masters. Some of these groups have strayed away completely from the Core Values of Islam. While some others who identify themselves by any other than Muslim, will be representing these political entities and their leaders interest to control wealth and power. Some of these leaders will ties up with the Devil. Muslims have a specific purpose in Life on earth. Most of them know it and pursue to the best of their ability.

  12. Voice123 Says:

HusseinFahmi, nice platitudes about Islam. Truth is that Sufism is entirely different to violent forms of Islam and has been influenced by / co-existed with more tolerant religious beliefs for cunturies. Do you oppose the violence and intimidation of the Sufis by the murderous Saudi backed terrorists? Saudi Arabia is run by desert barbarians that think it’s nothing wrong to rape women, young girls and boys and behead people in public for having a drink. These gonibilla attitudes are WORSE than the LTTE and have more powerful backers than LTTE does. Do you oppose the terrorists or are we going to hear more platitudes about how Islam is “peace” and opposed to the devil? Maybe you are afraid to openly oppose them, like some Tamil brethren are afraid of the LTTE?

  13. Lorenzo Says:

I want to agree with Saddam. What he has written is promising.

    BUT……..

“Islam prohibits coercion in all forms and destruction of all places of worship.”

e.g. Bamian Buddhist places of worship in Afghanistan
e.g. thousands of places of worship in Maldives, Pakistan, Malaysia, Bangladesh, etc.
e.g. traditional places of worship in Mali
e.g. recent destruction of almost ALL Buddhist places of worship in Bangladesh
e.g. They tried that in SL but got hammered (thank god).

    Stop lies. Face facts.

    This brings another interesting situation.

Looks like Wahabis, Sufis, Shiites, Sunnis and other Islamics are against each other. They will use violence against each other very soon. That is a huge opportunity for non-Muslims to MANAGE these threats. Set a thief to catch a thief!!!

  14. Lorenzo Says:

    Voice123,

Confusion and Shintho are derivatives of Buddhism.

Chinese anger against SOME Tibetan Buddhists is because Buddhist monks are working for Tibet’s separation from China.

  15. NeelaMahaYoda Says:

    Lorenzo
It is called Confucian or Confucianism
Shintoism and Confucianism were not derived from Buddhism at all.
Confucianism developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius 551–479 BC.
According to the Confucian structure of society, women at every level were to occupy a position lower than men. Most Confucians accepted the subservience of women to men as natural and proper where as in Buddhism we treated them as equal.
Shintoism is tradition of worshiping dead relatives
But there was no major clashes with Buddhism and these philosophies survived side by side. In Japan, most of the people follow shinto tradition when they get married and same people follow Buddhist tradition in funerals.

  16. Dr.Rajasingham Narendran Says:

    Shenali,

“LTTE extremism did not spring without a plan. Successive Governments did err and Tamil leaders stand guilty of misleading the Tamil people and tragically continuing to do so. Tamil civilians have helped little by maintaining their silence over the years – that was how Sri Lanka suffered 30 years of terror. That mistake should not be repeated.”

Thanks for acknowledging a part of our history, that is not identified as a cause for what happened subsequently. To educate the many who are either ignorent or deliberately ignore these factors. it important that a journalist of your calibre and especially a Sinhalse explore these factors in depth. This would help the national healing and reconciliation process. Most Tamil arguments favouring Eelam etc., stand on the legs provided by the 1948-1980 events. The best way to counter these arguments is to publicly acknowledge them and point out the changes that have come about since. The Tamils as well as Sinhalesee need this education.

Further, I have lived and worked in Saudi Arabia for 30 + years. I taught at a university and held senior positions in the private sector. I never felt that I was discriminated because of my religion or origins. Most Saudi’s are a courteous and hospitable people. There are fundamentalists among them, as there among other religious and social groups all over the world. The Saudis and other people in the Middle East, do not practice female circumcision. It is practiced in Egypt, Sudan and other African countries. It is an African tradition ( to render the females less sexual and hence less likely to wander) that is yet practiced among the Muslims in these countries.

Most Saudis do not practice ploygamy now. The first wife will not consent to this and most cannot afford it. Historically, the practice was sanctioned in Islam, because of the presence of a large number of widows and spinsters in society at its advent. The sanction to marry up to four wives, but with the sanction of the preceding ones, prevented a breakdown in social values and what were defined as moral norms. In a lighter vein, the war-affected Tamils may consider temporality taking up this practce, in view of the large number of widows and orphans amonst them! Fortunately/ unfortunately, most war affected Tamil men cannot afford to keep one wife or care for one family!

Some Saudis keep a second women through a device/agreement called ‘Misyr’. This is however much condemned. Further, women are very strong forces domestically and rule the roost as elsewhere in the world. In the public sphere, women are finding their place slowly but steadily. In fact, what I have seen over 30 + years is revolutionary. Blanket condemnation , generalizations and judgements are generally unwarranted. I have met and dealt with many more progressive and enlightened men in Saudi Arabia than in Sri Lanka.

The most touching incident in my university career in Saudi Arabia was when a group of Saudi students presented me a copy of the Holy Koran in English. They simply said it is our religious duty to do so, because they appreciated me as a teacher. The Holy Koran they preseented is one of my valued possessions.

Once I was in a group discussion about Mother Theresa, in which my late father- a man who had taught me much and contributed much to moulding me- was also a participant. He complained that Mother Theresa and her group of nuns were converting the poor and needy Hindu Indians to Christianity through charity. I asked in turn, why the Hindus in India were not practcing the same charity towards fellow Hindus, if they want to keep them in their fold. The group had no answer.

It is a fact in physics and life that when there is a vacuum-partial or total, air will rush into fill the vacant space. In life it is putrid air that will normally fill a social vacuum. The lesson is that we should care for our people as a whole and communities-religious, linguistic or otherwise, should take care of their poor and vulnerable better.

I have a relative, who converted to Islam, while in Saudi Arabia, he found Islam provided answers to his problems. he did not gain anything by way of money. he is back in Sri Lanka, is yet a Muslim and is struggling along in life.

  17. Lorenzo Says:

    Thanks NMY for clarifying.

If the timings are right, they strangely correspond to the time of Buddha. Apart from a few dissimilarities, the attempt to seek truth away from mythical gods is a BIG similarity. In common English use, all these are branded as Buddhist.

Without a debate these philosophies are closer to Buddhism than Islam or Hinduism.

  18. HussainFahmy Says:

There is clear distinction between the Message of Islam and those who practice it. There is always a small percentage of those who have deviated from the essence of the teachings of all faiths. These misguided’s sole purpose is to split the communities and or follow the Devil’s footstep of pitting against each other. This strategy has never worked and would continue to fail.

The moderate Muslim Scholar’s all over the world have condemned the destruction all places of worship. Although the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi still refuses to condemn the recent atrocities committed in Burma and the displacement of people and the destruction of their Honour and Property. It’s funny how some people have a clear one sided vision and they do stand out in a crowd when they voice their opinion. They are threatened by the Message of Islam and scares its exponential growth. So they go all out to discredit by unfair means. These people foolishly think they could deceive the fair minded people all over the world. May I reiterate that all communities, who violate human rights are accountable and will receive appropriate punishment. Example leaders of recent Arab Spring.

The article below opened my mind why we have convoluted and misguided people.

Source:- From Author Sunil Vijayapala – Posted on February 11th, 2011 Lankaweb.

Read an article here on the decline of Buddhism in Sri Lanka few days ago. While it may be declining in Sri Lanka thanks to our Pojakavaroos, it’s gaining ground in countries like Britain, Australia, USA, where a right effort is maintained to practice Buddhism, without much engagement in Poojas, but as Buddha rightly showed, through Meditation to purify the mind. If Sri Lankan Bhikkus too engage and guide followers in meditation, things would be quite different from the situation now prevailing in our country. If teachers are corrupt what would you expect the students to be? Buddha lived by example and did not commit any act contravening to Vinaya even in secrecy. Well if Emblipitiya Bhikkus grow their own Marijuana what do you expect Embilipitiya people would follow? If Bhikkus keep women in our citadel Anuradhapura and build houses for them and keep families, you need not go any further. If Bhikkus serve liquor to laymen, what example do they show? If sick monks in hospitals have sex with nurses… well the list never ends! Corrupt Bhikkus existed even during Buddha’s time and latter times and they were chased away but that is a thing of the past as the powerful Chief monks in Sri Lanka are the biggest crooks, patronized by corrupt politicians and the rich.

A true Muslim who practices the message of Islam, will condemn oppression and tolerate worship of dead people in Shrines. They will also tolerate all faiths and exchange ideas and concepts towards progress and development with mutual respect to each other with a language of knowledge and wisdom. Life on earth is on an average currently 83 years, choose to use it wisely.

  19. Lorenzo Says:

    Narendran,

Pending a proper answer to the part about Islam let me explain.

What you say about Muslims is true at a personal level. I agree. ALL my Muslim friends are very nice and HELPFUL people. I have lot of respect for them.

Didn’t Cameron or someone say the problem is NOT Muslims but Islam?

    1. The problem is Islam that ALLOWS polygamy, FGM, violence, etc., etc. NOT Muslims who are now trying to MOVE AWAY from Islam. Good on them. But they are not given an easy time by the movement that drags them in.

These people would be WAY BETTER if they were from another religion or irreligion.

    2. The next problem is Islamic Republics/Kingdoms (Islam in governance). It is the root cause of MOST world problems today.

“Most Tamil arguments favouring Eelam etc., stand on the legs provided by the 1948-1980 events.”

    ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE.

A Tamil Racist party by the name All Ceylon TAMIL Congress won ALL (except one) electorate in Jaffna in 1947. It was led by a dirty racist by the name Ponna-ambalam who called Sinhalese “mongrels” in 1939 trigerring a riot. The same guy made the racist 50-50 demand before that!

IF the voters were not racists, they would have REJECTED this party and its leader!!

The racist Vesawalamei law was introduced and practiced well before 1948. That is what eventually made Jaffna a Tamil only GHETTO.

IF the concept of Tamil homelands came into existence AFTER 1948, that proves there was NO Tamil homeland before 1948.

During the independence movement there was NO MENTION of Tamil homelands, Jaffna kingdom, etc. IF THEY DID, the events of 1947 in India and Pakistan would have happened in SL and it may have “resolved” the ethnic problem in a very bad way.

  20. HussainFahmy Says:

    Dr. Rajasingham Narendran

Your extensive knowledge and unbiased perspective in this subject restores sanity to those who seek to acquire the wisdom of truth. Thank you, Sir.

  21. Lorenzo Says:

“There is clear distinction between the Message of Islam and those who practice it.”

    Absolutely.

The problem is the message (I have given enough examples) not very much the misled people who practice it to the letter.

A bad Muslim practitioner is a GOOD PERSON. He will reject all slay, kill, ambush, vanquish, chop, slit, etc. commands in the Message with DISGUST. He will NOT engage in polygamy. He will eat bacon and drink beer with a limit and socialise. He will NOT quote from scriptures but talk sense. He will work in a bank and charge interest for loans and give interest for savings.

  22. Ananda-USA Says:

    Dr.Rajasingham Narendran,

What you say is QUITE TRUE: We should not condemn EVERYONE belonging to any large Community, without specifically identifying the sub-group of the community who espouse and practice what we deprecate.

That is why, for example, I am careful to direct my criticism towards Racists, Separatists and Eelamists among Tamils rather than Tamils as a whole, for I know through personal experience of living among Tamil people, neighbors, classmates, and co-workers, there are no different than other Sri Lankans.

HOWEVER, when you say “Most Tamil arguments favouring Eelam etc., stand on the legs provided by the 1948-1980 events. The best way to counter these arguments is to publicly acknowledge them and point out the changes that have come about since”, there is a HIDDEN IMPLICATION there that somehow the Sinhala people are SOLELY AT FAULT for those events, for example the 1983 riots, while the Tamil people are INNOCENT VICTIMS.

In every discussion of the 1983 riots, Tamil Eelamists present only one-side of the story, quietly avoiding acknowledging their own culpability for the FOUR PRECEDING YEARS of terrorist attacks on Govt officials, police stations, army posts etc etc that culminated in the murder of the 12 Army soldiers. It is the arrival of their bodies in Colombo that sparked the riots, after many years of patient endurance of Eelamist attacks. Neither do they mention the attacks on Sinhala people in Tamil majority areas. Attacks on innocent people of any community is abhorrent, but let us place the onus on the Eelamists who DELIBERATELY PRECIPITATED the 1983 riots.

The emphasis is ALWAYS on what the Sri Lanka Government, or the Sinhala people, did to Tamils, without acknowledgement of the fact these were DELIBERATE ACTS OF PROVOCATION by the Eelamists to PRECIPITATE VIOLENCE against Tamils that could then be used to ALIENATE them from the Sinhala people, and gain a CAPTIVE SUPPORT BASE for the Eelamists, all in the QUEST of their SEPARATE RACIST APARTHEID EELAM for Tamils-only. We KNOW the 30 year war that followed and its terrible impact on ALL communities of Sri Lanka.

A good question to ask is WHY did the Eelamists THEN (and NOW) think they could SUCCEED in this strategy, given that Tamils have always been a small minority in Sri Lanka, and that the majority community of Sri Lanka was bound to summon the WILL & DETERMINATION sometime to EFFECTIVELY RESIST and DEFEAT the Eelamists. What ENCOURAGED them to think otherwise?

I have three part ANSWER to that question.

First part of the ANSWER is that Sri Lanka was largely DEFENSELESS. The military weakness of Sri Lanka’s largely ceremonial Defense Forces of that time was evident to the blind. The Army was good for busting strikes and little else; the Navy and Air Force were mostly non-existent. Well, the Mahinda Rajapaksa Govt has shown how a Democratic Patriotic Government with Popular Support from a terrorism weary population can do to REVERSE that situation, by rallying the PATRIOTS, UNIFYING the people , and BUILDING up the Armed Forces. I hope Sri Lanka will NEVER AGAIN leave itself DEFENSELESS in the fond belief that innocent countries practicing good neighborliness have no enemies.

The Second part of the ANSWER is that they thought that the majority Sinhala Buddhists, recently liberated from colonial servitude, were SOFT and averse to FIGHTING. If the Eelamists had paused to ponder the long history of Sri Lanka, and its resistance over millenia to invaders from countries both near and far …. they would not have made that mistake.

It is not without cause, that a Chola Prince invading Sri Lanka inscribed on a stone where he landed “I have arrived in UNCONQUERABLE Lanka, the forehead ornament of Codagama Deva …. “, for he found out to his misfortune that Lanka was indeed UNCONQUERABLE populated and populated by a people of an unconquerable warrior race.

The record of Sri Lanka’s resistance over 400 years to successive waves of European invaders from the Portuguese to the British, is unparalleled in the history of European colonization. Never have so few, fought for so long, against so many, developing unique strategies to hold the enemy at bay. There is a document in the Royal Archives in Lisbon, Portugal, in which the Portuguese Viceroy at Goa, in command of all South Asian and South-East Asian colonial outposts of Portugal, recommends ABANDONING Sri Lanka by the Portuguese Forces, for military operations in Sri Lanka are costing more, and consuming more Portuguese soldiers, than all of the military operations in its other colonies, combined.

That, my friend, was how WELL the Sinhala Buddhist people of Sri Lanka fought for their Motherland; they were neither SOFT nor UNWARLIkE. What everyone needs to remember about Sinhala Buddhist people is that we are INTRINSICALLY a VERY WARLIKE people, our behaviour only restrained and moderated by the great and tolerant Buddhist religion we follow; a religion that gives the necessary balance for survival in the long run in this world. But when the call comes, we will rally under inspired leaders to the defence of our Motherland.

The Third part of the ANSWER is that the Eelamists thought then, as they think even now, that they can get UNQUESTIONING SUPPORT from Tamil Nadu to ACHIEVE their aim. In fact, many of these RACIST SEPARATIST ideas GERMINATED in Tamil Nadu and were imported from there into Sri Lanka very soon after Sri Lanka’s independence in 1948. When Indira Gandhi, and later Rajiv Gandhi, for the entirely different non-Racist reasons of reigning in Sri Lanka’s free-market economy aligned with the West at a time India was wedded to socialist policies and the Soviet Union, and to gain political support from Tamil Nadu to maintain control of the Union Govt at the center, threw its lot with the Eelamists against Sri Lanka …. it was pure manna from heaven for the Eelamists.

We recall that the Tamil Liberation Army in Tamil Nadu was seeking to secede from India well inspiring the creation of the Federal Party in Sri Lanka. That SEPARATIST goal that still seethes below the surface veneer of politics in Tamil Nadu. The grand old demagogue of Tamil Nadu politics, Karunanidhi, who penned peans to the late unlamented SunGod, even spelled out his grandiose visions of a Greater Tamil Nadu in maps that include the North and East of Sri Lanka.

THEREFORE, you are not going to CONVINCE me, or any others, that Eelamist Tamil sentiments sprang from “the 1948-1980 events”.

In fact, the OPPOSITE is TRUE: “the 1948-1980 events” sprang from RACIST SEPARATIST Tamil Nationalist IDEAS that sought to first INITIATE unprovoked events and then EXACERBATE them in the pursuit of the goal of a Greater Tamil Nadu.

Even today, the pot is kept boiling by the UNREPENTANT Eelamist Wolves of Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora wailing like innocent victims and demonizing Sri Lanka on the world stage, and the Tamil Nationalists of Tamil Nadu feeding the fire with various fabricated accusations and provocations. That, for example, is the reason for the LITANY of accusations that Tamil Nadu fishermen are UNJUSTIFIABLE hjarassed by the Sri Lanka Navy. They encroach on Sri Lankan waters on PURPOSE to provoke a confrontation, and then accuse Sri Lanka of harassment when they are apprehended. What we are seeing is a well ORCHESTRATED AGENDA to keep the pot bioiling, and Sri Lanka and India at loggerheads.

ALL of these events, from the 1948-1983 events, to those happening NOW, are driven by that ONE OVERALL Eelamist GOAL, a goal that will be resisted TOOTH and NAIL by the GREAT MAJORITY of Sri Lankans.

It is TIME, that decent patritic Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka intervened by SPEAKING UP and DENYING support for the Eelamists who are hell bent to make their lives, and those of all Sri Lankan citizens, miserable in Sri Lanka.

THEY will not SUCCEED … They will only DESTROY their OWN COMMUNITY.

  23. Dr.Rajasingham Narendran Says:

    Lorenzo and Ananda,

I do not in any way imply that the words and deeds of Tamil politicians and leaders (?) were lily-white in the period preceding and following independence. I was only pointing out that the faults of the Sinhala leadership should also be acknowledged , identified and discussed. The Tamils have been made to believe that the actions of the Sinhalese led to Tamil reactions. The Sinhalese have been made to believe that only the actions of the Tamils led to Sinhala reactions. Both positions are wrong, because both the Sinhala politicians and Tamil politicians have to share the blame. I emphasize that the Sinhala and Tamil people at large were innocent spectators and later victims.

Sir. P. Ramanathan was a great national leader, but he also made errors in fdefence of his class interests. Sir.P.Arunachalam was the scholar-leader, who had a wider and unquestionable national perpspective. GGP pedalled communlism to push aside the Ramanathan-Arunachalam legacy. It was downhill for the Tamils since then, with narrow communal politics coming to the fore. Chelvanayagam, Amirthalingham and others were landmarrks in this downward slip, which led to the prabaharan phenomenon. This side of the story is being repeatedly recalled for the Sinhalese and Tamils. There were also parallel actions and reactions on the Sinhala side. What I demand is that the side of the story involving persons like Sir. Marcus Fernando, Sir Baron Jayatilleke, D.S.Senanayake, J.R.Jayawardene, SWRD. Bandaranaike, Sirimavo Bandaranaike and others be studied and told to the Sinhala public. The story of the demise of the Ceylon National Congress should be recalled and told. The Tamils are being told this story by Tamils yet. Such biased and one sided approaches do not bode well for our country which has just emerged from decades of a curse.

I have also been quite critical of the TNA, especially its political expediency in the post-war years. TNA stupidity is bringing the Sinhala extremist attitudes and elements to the fore. The re-emerging phenonmenon does not represent the thought processes of the majority of Sinhalese and Tamils. This is sad and is the beginning of a re-enactment of the past.

Tamils are being made to feel that they are a defeated people by their politicians and some Diaspora elements. The Sinhalese are also being told that they have defeated the Tamils. On a war memorial in Mullaitivu, the words in English state that the area was ‘conquered’! This is wrong. Who conquered whom? It was a teriitory regained from the LTTE, which had become an organization that cared two hoots for the Tamils. I can accept words such as ‘Liberated’with reference to the defeat of the LTTE. As more and more Tamils visit this memorial, they are going to be stung by these words.

    Dr.Rajasingham Narendran

  24. Ananda-USA Says:

Voice123 said: “If Chinese loved Buddhism, they wouldn’t be suppressing Buddhism in Tibet.”

Not quite true, because religion is not the only issue at play here.

China, that is emerging from atheistic Communism that suppressed all religions, has allowed religion to re-emerge only recently, but is not particularly wedded to any particular religion.

On the other hand, China’s is driven by Nationalism, national security, and its territorial integrity.

They occupied Tibet for that reason; to forestall India and other powers, including the Soviet Union, from occupying Tibet and threatening its security. Occupation of Tibet was a pre-emptive move by China. China calculated that no other power would dare to challenge its move, after the massive invention by China in the Korean war. Their judgment correct …. everyone complained, but did nothing.

It has nothing to do with a dislike of religion by China. It so happens, that the governance of Tibet was based on the Dalai Lama and his Buddhist theocracy around which Tibetan patriotism crystallized; so Tibetan Buddhism became the target.

Incidentally, China has a historical claim on Tibet, through the Mongol conquest of both Tibet and China, and the Mongol Emperor basing himself in China. However, Tibet has sporadically been an independent state for the last 400 years, until its occupation by China in 1950.

  26. Dr.Rajasingham Narendran Says:

    Lorenzo and Ananda,

    Also,

Chelvanayagam used communalism to oust G.G. Ponnambalam as a political force among Tamils. Velupillai Prabaharan who was Amirathalingam’s hidden weapon, took the lives of those who breast fed him, to take forward his extreme ideology centred on an independent Tamil Eelam. It was an avalanche that gathered momentum and volume with time and nearly buried Sri Lanka. GGP despite his rhetoric had the wisdom to work with the government of the day. This brought enormous benefits to the north and east. The FP/TULF/ TNA have taken an adversarial path and have only brought misery on the Tamils. They enjoyed playing king-maker for the Sinhala polity. They cannot claim credit for any good they have done for the Tamils, except brainwashing them with their rhetoric. The ill-thought and un-understood satyagraha campaigns were a mistake. They only helped arouse adverse reactions among the Sinhalese and inflame the Tamils.

Similar incidents/actions can also cited from the Sinhala side of the fence:

    1. DS Senanayakes moves to disenfranchise the citizens of Indian and Pakistani origin. It now transpires this was done to erode the LSSP support base!
    2. The UNP-MEP competition on the national language issue.
    3. Debasement and elimination of the Senate.
    4. Elimination of the option to appeal to the Pivy Council as a result of the Kodeeswaran case on the language issue, without providing for alternate mechanisms.
    5. The standardization scheme introduced under false pretences and in a very virulent form.
    6. Adoption of new constitutions without consulting the minorities and eliminating the minimal safeguards provided in the Soulbury constitution.
    7. The anti-Tamil riots formented with state support.
    8. JRJ identifying Tamil grievances in the 1977 UNP manifesto and thereafter setting off two major riots, without resolving issues he had identified through the new constitution he promulgated with a 5/6th majority in parliament.
These failures gave a filip to the LTTE.
    8. The lack of investments in development in the north and east (and the South and Uva-which led to the JVP insurrections)

It takes two hands to clap and make a sound. The LTTE was the monster born out of the unholy matrimony in actions and counter actions between the Sinhala and Tamil political players. The LTTE monster nearly destroyed the Tamils and caused havoc among the Sinhalese and Muslims.

I have not written the above with malice. The exercise is to bring to the attention of the readers the background to where we are now. Intentions in some instances were above board, however how things were done and explained were wrong. Perceptions also a played a big role in how events unfolded.

    Dr.Rajasingham Narendran

  27. Lorenzo Says:

    Narendran,

    1. DS Senanayakes moves to disenfranchise the citizens of Indian and Pakistani origin. It now transpires this was done to erode the LSSP support base!

It was a very good thing. Why can’t the Indians go to India and Pakistanis go to Pakistan?

    2. The UNP-MEP competition on the national language issue.

It is called democracy. MOST countries have ONE official language. Sinhala must be the only official language of SL.

    4. Elimination of the option to appeal to the Pivy Council as a result of the Kodeeswaran case on the language issue, without providing for alternate mechanisms.

There is an alternative – supreme court.

    5. The standardization scheme introduced under false pretences and in a very virulent form.

Too many Tamils STILL in universities in the south but NO Sinhalese in the bloody racist Jaffna university.

    6. Adoption of new constitutions without consulting the minorities and eliminating the minimal safeguards provided in the Soulbury constitution.

Which country consults Tamils (or minorities) when adopting a Constitution?

    7. The anti-Tamil riots formented with state support.

Anti-Sinhala riots in 1958 and 1977 were done with Tamil civilian support.

  28. Lorenzo Says:

Tamil Nadu is the Tamil homeland. Why can’t you accept that?

SL is a Sinhala Buddhist country. Tamil Nadu is a Tamil state of India.

Those Tamils who cannot become Sinhalese MUST go to Tamil Nadu, if they want dignity.
Those Muslims who cannot become Sinhalese MUST go to Pakistan, if they want dignity.

Sinhalese should not go to Tamil Nadu.

  29. mjaya Says:

Well there is a very simple test to distinguish the good from the bad….

Remember Rizana Nawfeek? The girl who was convicted for a crime she didn’t commit by the most silly legal system on the planet (yes the legal system where you can simply divorce your wife by sending Talaq Talaq Talaq by SMS, where the rape victim is beaten for provoking a rape, despite all the polygamy and women dressing up like Darth Vader rapes still happen there. Believe it or not you can also summon Genies into a court! but you can’t summon Santa Claus even if you wanted to)

But it is no joke, Rizana Nawfeek has been sentenced to death by this stone age legal system.

The people with a heart in this country are doing whatever possible to free this poor girl. Those people regardless of them being Sinhalese, Tamil, Moor, Burgher or whatever, regardless of their faith are the noble people of today.

On the other side are the Dhimmis (eunuchs who don’t have the strength to do anything) and the Wahabis who keep silent on this. No need to bother about Dhimmis but Wahabis are not at all welcome in Sri Lanka.

  30. Lorenzo Says:

One good thing about Wahabis is they are always killing EACH OTHER.

e.g. Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Pakistan, etc.

  31. mjaya Says:

** UNHRC is investigating – (slay, kill, ambush, vanquish, chop, slit, etc.) towards the civilian population in Sri Lanka. Judgement will be to strengthening of 13th Amendment further. **

Who cares what the eUNuchHRC says? They don’t bother about stoning, beheading, amputations etc. in Saudi Arabia. They don’t bother about Shias being discriminated there as well.

Parrots can call for multiculturalism from anywhere in the world (probably to finance a visit to Deira or Bur Dubai) but the simple fact is that a stone age barbaric culture cannot and should not stay side by side a humane culture.

  32. Dham Says:

Hiding behind what you did in Saudi and what you are, you lied.

You are insulting Africans here, hiding the fact that Indian Bora community all over the world practice this inhuman act. It is very common in India. You are shy to accept Indians practice this and cheating the reader.

    2. Saudi Arabia is the only country that did not allow women to drive cars, until recently.
    3. If Saudis are so good , why is Rizana Nawfeek still in death row ?
    4. If Saudis are so good, why the drive nails into poor servant’s body.
    5. “The standardization scheme introduced under false pretences and in a very virulent form.” – How dare you say this ?

What is the false pretense ? Even Tamils in rural areas agree that if not for standardisation they had no chance.
Then you go on to say,

“I have not written the above with malice. The exercise is to bring to the attention of the readers the background to where we are now.”

What nonsence ? 100% malice intentions. It is exactly the dishonest tamil mentality you posess that brought you to where you are now.

  35. Ananda-USA Says:

    Dr.Rajasingham Narendran:

This relates INDIRECTLY to your list of 8 points above, and DIRECTLY to comments you made on a different webpage at LankaWeb. You said:

    1. “Sri Lanka has however an obligation to its minorities. The obligation is to provide them equal opportunities as citizens, afford them equal protection as citizens …”

NO, Sri Lanka has NO OBLIGATION to “minorities” per se’, but YES, Sri Lanka the OBLIGATION to assure the SAME EQUAL rights for ALL CITIZENS, and to hold ALL citizens ACCOUNTABLE to their EQUAL RESPONSIBILITY to obey the law, serve and defend the country, IRRESPECTIVE of Community.

In other words, GOVERNMENT, acting in the PUBLIC SPHERE, should be BLIND to Communal differences.

    2. “Recognise their language rights” …. YES, and the Government should institute a fair language policy purely only because it eases effective governance; otherwise it should let people use whatever language they wish. In my view, the Tri-Lingual Policy advocated by MR is the best, compulsorily requiring proficiency in both Sinhala and Tamil from ALL citizens, and compulsory proficiency in English so that all Sri Lankans can swim like fish in the ocean of the world as a whole.

    3. “Recognise their cultural rights” …. NO, the Government should have NO BUSINESS promoting cultural rights of any community. That should be RELEGATED to the PRIVATE SPHERE of the lives of individuals. Let people enjoy their culture in their PRIVATE homes and PRIVATE institutions.

But, when they interact with others outside those private institutions they should be governed by PUBLIC laws … such as those prohibiting discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, religion, language, caste, sex, and wealth.

For example, a Tamil Brahmin should have the right to deny entry to a lower-caste Tamil into their PRIVATE homes, or to a PRIVATE devotional area within their own home, or into marriage with their children, if they so choose, but they should be prohibited by law from denying entry to a PUBLIC Hindu temple, to a home rented to the public, or to a job in their business that serves the public.

    4. “take into account their concerns in governance and permit them to participate in governance at the national level. ” ” … YES, allow them that as EQUAL citizens of Sri Lanka, through the SAME ELECTORAL and other mechanisms of Governance available EQUALLY to ALL citizens of Sri Lanka, but NOT through SPECIAL mechanisms made available because they are “Tamil” people who should be separately REPRESENTED at the National, or at ANY OTHER LEVEL, of Governance, through positions reserved for Tamils only.

If COMMUNAL representation in governance were to be allowed for Tamils, then there would have to be SEPARATE REPRESENTATION for the SINHALA people and the MUSLIM people as well …. and we are back where we began …. dividing Sri Lanka … and its citizenship rights on Communal bases. There would again be INTERMINABLE accusations of “discrimination” and “unfairness” in the allocation of government benefits. We are back to UNENDING communal riots!

Do you realize that this is EXACTLY what is happening in India, where with the good intention of uplifting disadvantaged people, Government assistance is allocated on the basis of CASTE …. Scheduled Castes, Other Disadvantaged Castes, and what have you, ad infinitum, ad nauseam, leading to a goldrush in getting communities identified and defined as “caste disadvantaged”? Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of poor Brahmins pull rickshaws and clean toilets in New Delhi and elsewhere, without government aid because they are “high caste” … BY DEFINITION … because they wear the “Purna Noola” around their scrawny underfed necks.

This communal allocation of benefits has led to frequent civil strife and riots in India. As one Indian Supreme Court judge remarked “There is no country in the world like India where people struggle to degrade themselves socially to receive government handouts!” This is one of the reasons why I say, that India has NO WISDOM IN GOVERNANCE to offer Sri Lanka … they are mired in communal policies that pit their communities against one another. They are trying to force the same poisonous pills down Sri Lanka’s throat. BIG, clearly, is neither BETTER nor WISER!

Allocation of National Benefits on COMMUNAL bases is a terribly UNFAIR, and inexorably DIVISIVE, way of assisting people, that creates more problems than it solves. The CORRECT WAY to allocate National Benefits to the needy, is to base that allocation on verified NEED, and NEED ALONE, irrespective of Community.

Your recommendation of SEPARATE REPRESENTATION for Minorities at the National Level is a step on this fast path to COMMUNAL HELL presumably paved with good intentions.

  36. Lorenzo Says:

“UNHRC is investigating – (slay, kill, ambush, vanquish, chop, slit, etc.) towards the civilian population in Sri Lanka. Judgement will be to strengthening of 13th Amendment further.”

    How foolish these people are!!!

Wasn’t it the UN that planned and carried out the elimination of MILLIONS of Muslims in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Libya, Syria, Turkey, Pakistan, Somalia, etc., etc.?

Wasn’t it the UN that killed a MILLION Muslim kids in Iraq in the guise of a UN SANCTION?

Thank god these people are so damn foolish so that we can manipulate them to their extinction.

Wahabis, Shiites, Sunnis, etc. DO kill each other. BOTH USA and Russia support them to dig their own grave which saves US marines, Russian soldiers.

  37. Lorenzo Says:

“Your recommendation of SEPARATE REPRESENTATION for Minorities at the National Level is a step on this fast path to COMMUNAL HELL presumably paved with good intentions.”

That is why I said the military option must be used CREATIVELY to silence separatism. Otherwise this will be a GHETTO of Bantustan communal hell like Tamil Madu where no Sinhalese can step into.

Violence works against separatism. It worked very well since the time of King Dutugemunu. Invader king Ellalan was a PEACEFUL king. But he created Tamil GHETTOS which was not tolerated by SLs.

  38. Dham Says:

Some fools do not know that UN is a Zionist organisation in the first place. Obviously Wahabi votes for Sri lanka angers them.

  39. Dr.Rajasingham Narendran Says:

    Ananda,

    1. “NO, Sri Lanka has NO OBLIGATION to “minorities” per se’, but YES, Sri Lanka the OBLIGATION to assure the SAME EQUAL rights for ALL CITIZENS, and to hold ALL citizens ACCOUNTABLE to their EQUAL RESPONSIBILITY to obey the law, serve and defend the country, IRRESPECTIVE of Community.”

I applaud your position. This is the proper and permanent cure for our ailments. All other solutions are palliatives to treat symptoms and not the cause. My question is how likely is this scenario? Would the Sri Lankan state roll back various acts of ommision and commision which have over the years severely circumscribed the concept you advocate?

3.” “Recognise their cultural rights” …. NO, the Government should have NO BUSINESS promoting cultural rights of any community. That should be RELEGATED to the PRIVATE SPHERE of the lives of individuals. Let people enjoy their culture in their PRIVATE homes and PRIVATE institutions. ”

I once again agree. If the state takes its hands off the cultural (including the religious) aspects of life of all peoples, there will not be any need for what I have highlighted. Once again how possible is what you suggest in reality? The law and order mechanism should also function optimally and in a fair manner to give form to what you advocate.

I am also for banning all caste-based references and considerations from public life. What people want to do within their homes and families is their private business.

    4. ” YES, allow them that as EQUAL citizens of Sri Lanka, through the ELECTORAL and other mechanisms of Governance available EQUALLY to ALL citizens of Sri Lanka, but NOT because they are “Tamil” people who should be separately REPRESENTED at the National, or at ANY OTHER LEVEL, of Governance, through positions reserved for that Community.”

I agree quite enthusiastically. However, how realistic is this considering what has transpired over almost 65 years of our history? If it can be made to happen, it will be dream come true for me.

I have had the opportunity to meet President Rajapakse thrice, along with delegations of like minded persons. I always had the impression after these meetings that the president wants to move in the direction you suggest and I wish. However, he has failed to articulate this policy clearly and loudly. The post-war investments in the north and east, the manner in which the IDP crisis was handled and the tri-lingual language policy are in the right direction. His efforts at learning Tamil and speaking Tamil in public was an enlightened move. I have been very critical of the TNA for not responding positively to these moves.

What is needed is for the president to clearly postulate his vision.

I do not even in my deams want Sri Lanka to move in the direction of legitimizing castes. They have made the onoxious caste system, a permanent feature of modern India. Even the so-called higher castes in India, project themselves to be lower castes to enjoy some mandatory privileges. The language-based state=system in India probably was inevitable in view of her size. Further, the Índian’conciousness in every citizen has subsumed the regional and language identity. The vibrant democracy and the much respected secular constiution of India, which have stood the test of time, are formidable bulwarks hold that country together, despite the potential for divisiveness. India has found unity in its diversity and celebrates this diversity, through an ability to accomodate.

Thank you once again for your enlightened positions. My objecive in engaging in some of the discussions in Lanka Web, is to bring out such enlightened thoughts from particularly the Sinhalese. The Tamils have to hear these as the voice of the Sinhalese majority. I hope our dreams for Sri Lanka will come true. Let us continue to contribute our mite, through at least what we write and comment.

  40. Hussain Fahmy Says:

Why is Sri Lanka compared with Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Libya, Syria, Turkey, Pakistan, Somalia, etc., etc.? The dynamics of Sri Lanka with these countries are far apart. It is a commonly known fact that inequalities and sectarian division is what causing Death and Pilferage of their natural resources by the so-called International Community. The political system of these countries have strayed away from the authentic teachings of Islam beyond recognition. Does the people of Sri Lanka wish to follow Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Libya, Syria, Turkey, Pakistan, Somalia, etc., path of destruction and subservience to the unpopular International Community?

Shouldn’t we learn what Sri Lanka is up against with the so-called International Community and take corrective measures to avoid loss of more innocent lives. No power on earth can eliminate 1.8 Billion Muslims until the Creator wishes to do so. Muslims believe that ALL aggressors are accountable. However, Muslims are encouraged to promote Peace among ALL communities and preserve Honour and Property of ALL communities.

All these comments on Wahabi, Sufi and etc., are methods concocted by the International Community and their misinformed new immigrant citizens (Tigers in Sheep’s clothing) making an effort to split and pit against each other, so they may continue to live on tax payers national assistance (Dole) and profit the weapon Industry. Muslims around the world are increasingly aware of this phenomena and returning to their original sources. As a result these isms will be a thing of the past. The goods news is most Sri Lankan Muslims have passed the stage of gullibility. Money never buys lasting Loyalty. Sincere loyalty to ones faith and nation is a product of the Heart. Its got to be won over.

Rizana’s incarceration, Judiciary justice differs from country to country. Some, countries who falsely claim FREEDOM JUSTICE LIBERTY detain suspects without any evidence or charges for years, example Guantanamo Bay, Bradley Manning, while some others practice a TRIBAL Justice System. Good that you understand it (even though it is guaranteed that you will never admit it). The simple truth is even if a creator did exist, this creator is unable to change a human mind. Strange isn’t it. The creator who supposedly created the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, is completely incapable of changing the mind of his own creation.

For this miracle to work, it is necessary that the faithful remain firmly faithful. By the grace of the creator, they must listen to the words of the creator, reject modern family planning, go for additional slave women (in addition to their allowed 4 wives), get on the dole and devote all their time to procreation and taking the right path shown in their scripture.

Parithy, one of Sri Maha Bodhi attackers

    by Manjula FERNANDO

    November 11, 2012

The LTTE leader, Parithy, killed in France on Friday was a member of the terrorist group that carried out the Sri Maha Bodhi attack where 146 Buddhist devotees and bhikkhus were massacred on May 14, 1985, Head of International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (ICPVTR) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Prof. Rohan Gunaratna said.

According to intelligence sources, Parithy a supporter of the LTTE Nediyawan faction had been killed by the Vinayagam faction which is now aligned with US based lawyer Rudrakumaran of the TETG.
