“Sri Lanka will not compromise security while part of LTTE still at large” – Secretary of Defence

The statement by Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Secretary of Defence of Sri Lanka, that the Sri Lankan government will not compromise when it comes to providing security to the nation should send a clear message to all the foreign governments, bogus human rights propaganda purveyors and the LTTE leadership in the affluent West, which keep on demanding demilitarisation of the North or a reduction of the armed forces in the Northern regions of Sri Lanka.

As the Defence Secretary had quite rightly pointed out it was only the military wing of the LTTE, which was based in Sri Lanka that got annihilated during the humanitarian operation that culminated in May 2009. The rest of the LTTE is alive and well, and is more active than ever before, pushing and enticing the corrupt politicians in Canada, the US, the UK and many other rich countries to raise non-existent human rights issues against Sri Lanka at the UN, IMF and the Commonwealth.

Additionally the LTTE seems to think it has a monopoly on the use of the word ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-genocideƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, when, in fact, it was the LTTE that committed horrendous massacres against the Sinhala and Moor ethnic groups for a number of years. Reporting a recent meeting that a Canadian Minister, who serves as a spokesperson for the LTTE, has had with Tamil Canadians, the LTTE refers to genocide and annihilation. It was none other than the very same LTTE that chased away all the Sinhala and Moor people, as well as the Sinhala undergraduate students who were studying at University of Jaffna ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” a national university funded by the Sri Lanka government ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” and created a Tamils-only North.

It is the defence establishment of Sri Lanka that decides on the location and the strengths of the military contingents in the various regions of the country. Any peace-loving Sri Lankan would say that the military presence in the North should be increased a great deal ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” and certainly not reduced ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” because the LTTE curse was born in the North and any resurgence of the terrorist group can be nipped in the bud through proper intelligence and active engagement where necessary, if the military is present as needed.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary grouping of the 54 nations that once came under the British Empire. The United Nations, similarly, is a gathering of 193 nations each of which, by its very charter, is entitled to equal treatment by the others, irrespective of its military might, the financial prowess or the ability to coerce others to tow its line. The threats of the Prime Minister of Canada that he will not attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) due to be held in Sri Lanka in November, or the US and its lackeys using the UN to bring up issues of alleged human rights violations by Sri Lanka are driven by vested interests and ulterior motives.

Sri Lanka has to ensure that its sovereignty and territorial integrity are not threatened by the LTTE or any other groups. An essential measure that should be in place for achieving such a goal is to place the armed forces in sufficient strength in the North. If the Secretary of Defence feels that all members of the armed forces should go to the North, so be it.

Let the Canadian Prime Minister, his pro-LTTE ministers and other groups and organisations that demand troop withdrawal or its reduction from the North of Sri Lanka keep on demanding what they want. All that the sovereign state of Sri Lanka should do is to direct them to the age old saying, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Let the dogs bark: the caravan moves onƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.

I am no supporter of any politician but love the country of my birth.
I commend them battling with tremendous odds of the conniving IC against us to bring that terrorist hold to the end and we have relative peace in the country get on with our lives. They were clever and well thought of in every step, likewise there must be a logical reason for allowing likes of KP and Karuna to be free.Perhaps going lenient on those Uni, kids must be another logical reason for no strong action against the students. So must hold our horses and wait…
Never should allow any terrorist or separatist to re group in anywhere in the island. Also the majority Sinhalese and buddhists shouldn’t weld their powers on others which is divisive. In advanced countries social cohesion is very much in evidence and no majority or minority faith or group has preference. This way we could move forward as one nation and every citizen will be a stake holder in devoloping and defending the island.Devide we fall.

  6. Lorenzo Says:

    Nimal,

In advanced countries the MAJORITY language and religion RULE!

e.g. UK, USA, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, etc.

ONLY the majority’s language is the OFFICIAL and NATIONAL language (ONE).

ONLY the majority’s religious festivals are holidays.

I find NO HOLIDAY for Thai Pongal, Sivarathri, Diwali, etc. in USA!!! :((
I spoke in Tamil at a Seattle police station and they told me to go to hell!! :((

These are facts I experienced first hand.

  7. Hiranthe Says:

Gota wants to do many things including abolishing 13th Amendment. But MR must have temporarily blocked him. Gota is the only person does some constructive work in SL today.

I think MR is playing a political game,, don’t know which way it will go… but Gota will not drop this idea. Although I do not like MR’s leniency towards India and tolerating our currupt politicians, I have a strong feeling that he will get rid of these PC’s in the right time. Now he must be playing a safe game. Once the IC’s bashing of Sri Lanka finishes, he will do that for the country… similar to his tolerance to Mervin Silva….. for some reason.

That must be the reason he still wants to maintain 2/3 of the parliament majority by giving ministerial posts for useless, headless politicians and increasing the number of ministries just to keep these politicos happy.

But, if he does not do it… then no one else who can do it. We only have to wait and see, while tolerating his political game played to buy time (assuming)

In the meantime we only have to pray and wish for a simple administrative system for this small island nation.

  8. Voice123 Says:

Agree with Nimal, we need to be patient for a while. MR is not a total fool. The government must have a strategy but cant disclose it too openly for fear of enemy retaliation. Let us not allow things like him worshipping in a Hindu temple to upset us. If it helps to get the average Indian voter to install governments that are more favourable to us, what is the harm? These are only minor things. Strategic and symbolic moves are very important, especially in India.

If we are to defend our county against the enemies across the sea to the north you can’t compare SL with the countries you mentioned above. We are sadly a backward and relatively an underdeveloped country, where we still don’t manufacture, invent and innovate like the countries above. We still depend on the foreign aid and loans.Anything worth taking about the industries or commerce we indulge in is left there by the recent colonials and we are in self denial but trying a step back by going and glorifying our nasty and original colonial from the subcontinent.
We are in a such a weak position that we must have a link language first to unite our communities and communicate with the all important English speaking world. This is exactly what my Chinese guest is saying. They too need a link language to unite their vast and multicultural subcontinent. For a sinister reason by their leaders will not agree with the wish of their people. It’s one way of controlling their people, but they too send a small percentage of her people to learn English in to various western countries.
We must follow Singapore and have English as the link language, which is the language of technology and world wide media.
Our people must communicate and assimilate with the people that are winners in the world and they are in the countries you mentioned above. So to do so we must have English as the link language. If that is good for the non English advanced countries to send their selective siblings to study English then it must be good for us.They could easly teach English in their own countries but they are sent to far away UK to learn the stable lifestyle of UK.Out of all the above countries I have visited, lived and done business,UK comes up the best.People in UK is relatively fairminded, politicians and other leaders are honest and transparent, people respect the law and the law enforcers(especially the police and the judiciary)respect the people. These qualities makes a country a great place to live, the reason people wants to invest and live and we can do the same in UK.So let’s follow the winners and gain credibility and respect that would help us to combat any unwanted attention of the meddling IC.

  10. Nimal Says:

Correction. We can do the same in SL.

Symbolic things are good as far as diplomacy but should not be allowed to be imposed on our lives. They sometimes impede our daily living and working lives in SL.They tool are used to control and suppress people and encourage corruption.People are not intrested in these.

  12. Lorenzo Says:

    Nimal,

You are wrong on 2 counts.

    1. ALL those advanced countries were VERY VERY POOR when SL was rich. They became advanced by having ONE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE and ONE NATIONAL LANGUAGE!!

    2. SL was a VERY ADVANCED country in the past when there was only ONE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE and ONE NATIONAL LANGUAGE!!

SL MUST have ONE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE and ONE NATIONAL LANGUAGE.

All this discussion started with the RUMOUR that SL national anthem were to be changed to a “malu kade” song by singing it in both Sinhala and Tamil Nadu language on independence day. Thank god it didn’t happen. Actions speak LOUDER than words. Well done!

  13. Voice123 Says:

Lorenzo, I sometimes wonder whether you are an agent provocateur?

Sinhala can remain in place as the official and national language but all communities have a basic human right to speak, perpetuate and function in their language/s. Even Sinhalese have a right to learn and use other languages should they so wish to and vice versa for members of other communities. MR’s idea of everyone learning everyone elses language is good. Dont knock it. Its our best protection in a globalised world. We are not living in a malu kade but a global village.

  14. Lorenzo Says:

    Vice,

Sinhala MUST be the ONLY Official language of SL (as with many many developed countries and as with how SL WAS in the past when it was a PROSPEROUS country).

ANYONE should have the right to learn/speak ANY language. For that you don’t have to make them OFFICIAL or NATIONAL languages!!

In USA people speak OVER 100 languages!! But only ONE OFFICIAL language!! :))

SL MUST have ONLY ONE VERSION ONE LANGUAGE national anthem just like 190+ other countries.

If SL national anthem is sung in more than ONE language, it will be like “MALU KADE”.

Global village is made up of 200+ countries out of which 190+ countries sing their national anthem in ONE LANGUGE ONLY. No Malu Kade national anthems except for a very few.

MOST Tamils have NO PROBLEM (only RACISTS and IDIOTS have a problem) singing the SL national anthem in Sinhala only. Tamils sang the SL national anthem in Sinhala only in Trincomalee just a few weeks ago!! (This should teach the racists and idiots that they have NO say on the matter.)

I sing the US national anthem in English ONLY. I don’t demand or want it to be in Tamil!!
I forgot the world’s LARGEST democracy. It sings its national anthem in one language too. (Indians!)

  15. Voice123 Says:

Lorenzo, we will have to agree to disagree on this point.

  16. Lorenzo Says:

Yep. We have to agree to disagree and let the voting majority of SL make a firm decision.
