IDPS of North Demanding Lands Occupied by Sri Lankan Military

The media reported on 16 February that thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are on a hunger strike in Jaffna demanding that they be given the land that the military occupies. The clamour should be dismissed outright.

The armed forces of Sri Lanka are there to ensure the security of the country as directed by the Minister of Defence. The men and women in uniform will be stationed in any part of the country in whatever strengths that the defence establishment considers necessary.

The LTTE ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” the concept of kotiyas was almost considered somewhat of joke by many Sri Lankans at the very start until they gang was transformed into a ruthless killing machine later on with the help of Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”friendsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” originated in the North. The Sri Lanka government cannot afford to lower its guard lest the curse of terrorism raises its head again to destroy the country.

The armed forces have large contingents in many parts of the country, and most of these lands that they occupy today may have belonged to civilians at some stage. Panagoda, Pallekele, Diyatalwa and Anuradhapura are just a few examples of the locations that the military rightly occupies. We never hear the Sinhala people complaining of the army presence or that their land has been taken over by the military.

Many in Jaffna and other parts of the North feel that there are separate Tamil areas in the country. They mistakenly believe that the Sri Lanka armed forces should not venture into territories that they consider as theirs and no one elseƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s, so that they can carry on with the detestable thesavalamai laws and caste-based segregations of their own.

The attitude gets propagated by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs who are in the forefront in carrying the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Tamils OnlyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ hogwash. They are ready to run to Tamil Nadu, New Delhi, Cape Town, Geneva and other such places to degrade Sri Lanka at every possible forum at the drop of a hat. They rarely utter anything that has even a semblance to suggest that they consider themselves as Sri Lankan nationals, in spite of the fact that they receive their salaries and perks from the taxes paid by the rest, 75% of whom belong to the Sinhala ethnic group.

The hunger strikers should invite the TNA bigwigs to join them. Going without food for a while would do some good to the latter, too, at least on health considerations.

By the way, the people who label themselves as IDPs fell into that state because of the actions of their saviour ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Sun GodƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢. It is Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s military that extricated them from their peril and gave them a chance to live as civilians without fear of forced eviction from their habitats.

We need soldiers every where to maintain peace and to safeguard others from barbarious tamil tiger supporters. Only the murderers dont like that
This is srilanka not EELAM WE know how tamils killed their own people

Thanks to the army now we are free

  2. Lorenzo Says:

    Give them NOTHING.

We gave them ALL their lands PLUS the lands of Sinhalese, Muslims, govt., MOST army camps. Now they want REMAINING army camps, etc.!!!

“They are like crocodiles. The more meat you give them, the more they demand.”. – Former Israeli PM

  3. Senevirath Says:

Srilankan Tamils are wild hunting dogs trained and sent after sinhalese to hunt them and to to them in to peices. More schools were given with english education so that they can understand british orders– catch.. kill ..catch ..kill.

land s with special THESAWALAMEI powers were given and stil look after them

Sinhala majority 75% should be ashamed that they have not taken any action against tHESAWALAMAI
THIS AN INVITATION TO BODUBALA SENA, HELA URUMAYA and M .E P AND JATI HITHAISHI ORGANISATION TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION

PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE OF THE DANGER – NOT EVEN SOME LAWYERS IN SRI LANKA

SOMEWHERE IN 1970S fELIX DIAS WANTED TO ABOLISH THESAWALAMAI BUT DUE TO THE PRESSURE HE GAVE UP

SO FAR NO LEADER HAS COME FORWARD. NO REAL LEADER WITH A BACKBONE.

MAHINDA CAN DO IT IF SINHALESE ORGANISE THEMSELVES AND DEMAND HIM TO ABOLISH IT. WHY CANT HE DO IT IF HE CAN KILL PRABHAKARAN AND CHALLENGE SARATH F.. AND SHIRANI B.as U N P bhikkus say.

  4. nilwala Says:

This is the only leader with a backbone…so let us face that reality and give the support needed to bring about the fundamental changes to the mindset and to the divisions left by the Colonials.

  5. Fran Diaz Says:

How many Tamil people in the N&E and even other places in Sri Lanka are ILLEGAL MIGRANTS, now demanding land ?

Also GOSL is asking for proof of ownership of land demanded by IDPs (see LankaPage). Apart from those who are still awaiting de-mining of their land where land mines were laid by the ltte, wht about the rest demanding land ? Lankans, stay with the Law – demand that proof of ownership be shown first !

Sinhala people and all those who desire Peace in Sri Lanka should unite to do battle against Injustices brought upon the whole of Sri Lanka, against the true born Sri Lankans, whatever ethnicity or religion. Do not let outside elements usurp, divide, or take over, the country. Remember some 500 yrs of Colonial rule ? United we stand, divided we fall.

America is set to deport some 7 Million Mexicans (figure as at 2013) identified as illegal migrants. As land size and wealth goes, Sri Lanka cannot afford any illegal migrants at all.

  6. dingiri bandara Says:

The Sri Lanka government has the right to have army camps any where in the country. The reason why the why the LTTE was able to build such a powerful army was because there were no powerful army camps. The LTTE caused so much chaos, destructed so much property and destroyed so many lives of Sinhalese,Muslims and Tamils. Although the LTTE army was defeated, there are other LTTE cadres with the support of other countries with vested interests and arms dealers and manufactures are very active and given the opportunity will create trouble again. In addition to armed forces,we need to have intelligence units stationed in the North, East and in other countries to gather intelligence. This is how Israel and most other countries protect themselves. It is only this administration have foresight, the will and the power to do this.
The Sinhalese are mostly peaceful people and it is up to the government to take the necessary steps to protect the country and its people. In order fight the LTTE the Sinhalese did not raise private armies but joined the Government forces. Too many brave and young sacrifised their lives to save the country.

  7. Lorenzo Says:

    From Russia Today.

This shows HOW BS this war crimes, HR allegations are!! Even UK doesn’t believe it!!

But I’m worried about the TONE of this Russian pro-govt. website. May be Russia is turning against SL? What they say is WHY NOT SL buy these weapons from Russia?

“Assault rifles, shotguns and pistols worth over $3.8 million were revealed to be among the goods the UK has exported to Sri Lanka – a country accused of repeated human rights violations by the UN, and London itself.

The export report for the second half of 2012, published by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, revealed that small arms and ammunition were sold to Sri Lanka last year. According to the report, more than $3.8 million in sales in 2012 fell into the ‘ML1’ category, which stands for small arms and weapons, the Campaign Against the Arms Trade said.

The arms sales are made despite reports by British authorities on human rights violations committed in the South Asian country. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office recently said that that Sri Lanka’s human rights record was marked by negative developments over the last 3 months, “especially in relation to the judiciary.”

A Department for Business Innovation and Skills spokesperson told the Guardian such decisions are made on a case-by-case basis: “Each assessment we make takes into account the intended end use of the equipment, the behavior of the end user, the risk of diversion and the prevailing circumstances in the country concerned. We pay particular attention to allegations of human rights abuses.”

News of the arms exports to Sri Lanka has prompted controversy in the UK press. Several major newspapers published critical articles on the matter. “We shouted loudest over Sri Lanka’s abuses. Three years on and we’re arming the regime,” Jerome Taylor of The Independent wrote.”

  8. Vijendra Says:

Should we not start building our own arms now?

  9. Lorenzo Says:

    Very good point by Vijendra.

Self sufficiency in defence is what SL needs now. It can save MILLIONS of dollars.

Then SL will not have to depend on world’s WORST HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATORS for weapons.

  10. Ben Silva Says:

I fully agree with Vijendra and Lorenzo that we should develop our arms industry. Smaller countries in Europe have their on industry. The arms industry will create jobs and develop and skills. Unfortunately, some people who prefer commission may oppose it Also we we have to master economic and financial fields, rather than seek unproven, non existent Nirvana, which is an Indian belief that even Indians do not believe any more. We need to learn and evolve before we lose thew whole of Lanka.

  11. Voice123 Says:

This protest is financed by the LTTE diaspora with a view to churning the propoganda machine and try re-start the stalled engine of terrorism together with its struggling component elements – illegal immigration, JVP and ignorant Sinhala thugs and violent revolutionaries, gutter journalism, corrupt Indian politicians, arrogant NRIs in sympathy with Tamil separatists, NGOs, INGOs, local neocolonialistic people who feel superior to other Sri Lankans, racially arrogant and misguided ordinary western people who deep down still believe in white superiority over the coloured races, western human rights activists, misguided Christians and Catholics in the West for “social justice” and “minority rights in third world countries” (these people are not in Southern Sri Lanka but in the West), the do-gooder and illegal immigrant support industry in the West, the so-called “multicultural lobby” of the West, opportunistic Western politicians looking for gains in marginal electorates, arms merchants, etc. It is an organic problem like a weed with a multitude of sprouts all coming from the same evil infection. We have to see the bigger picture and act accordingly.
