That he bats with power albeit judiciously mostlyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and bowls with ferocity combined with stunning accuracy despite a few strayers on the legsideƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ is probably putting it mildly about our gentle giant Thisara Perera who somehow fails to attract the attention of selectors at times and pre-empted for experimental minnows who time and time again come a cropper against superior opposition.

Perhaps at times the lastƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ name ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ get mixed up and the wrong Perera is selected (not forgetting the name MendisƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ that also comes to mind in this respect)ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ as we have seen relative to the former in the case of the choice for the Champions Trophy and the Tri Nations where in all probabilities Thisara’s selectionƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  might have netted Sri Lanka at least one trophy but allƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ that is speculationƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ as the uncertainties in cricket ’tis said are glorious but there might also have been glory had the selectors chanced to pick the young Sri Lankan superhero where theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ dissapointingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ climaxes may have been avoided.
While it seems almost certainƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ that aƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ fortuitous future awaits him based on the form he has been showing in recent games and previously, hopefully in all formats of the game he needs all the encouragement towards continued performance and honing of skillsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ rather than the ignominy of being bypassed for selection by what appears to be one of the most wayward of selection committees ever, headed by what many see as a self opinionated and insensitve chaiman of selectorsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  basking in past glory whoƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ seems to be motivated by patronage and personal favoiritismƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ whereƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the personage akin to a fresh breath of airƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ with fantastic experience to moot such as that of an Arjuna Ranatunga will surely do wonders for Sri Lanka Cricket.
The magnificient runƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Thisara hadƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ in the ODI’s thus farƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ against South AfricaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ is indicative of hisƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  vital importance to the Sri Lanka squad and to watch him hit the South African bowlers in true Jessopian style (35 in a single overƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ) while also rattling timberƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  to the chagrin of the South African batsmen is indicative of greater things to come not only in the continuation of the present series but also down the roadƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  fitness permitting.
On another note,It also needs to be observed that Sri Lanka Cricket suddenly seems to be in the doldrums where even the ICC appears to be slighting it withƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ an indifferent attitude that has restrictedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ major tournaments with Sri Lanks as a venueƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ being bypassed for other locations, a sad reality that needs to be changedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ . perhaps as the impasse such an attitude by the ICC could create in Sri Lanka could have dire ramifications for the nation not only from a cricketing perspective but also the general image of Sri Lanka which as always been classified as one of the most idyllic settings for cricket.
Hopefully the fair winds of change and ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ fortune will deliver Sri Lankan Cricket to the heights it deserves with its spritely and talented young cricketersƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  like Thisara and the rest riding a crest towards great cricketing heights even moreƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ than those already reachedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  and not compromised by bad choices and decision making by the powers that be!
