Vigneswaran former Supreme Court Judge seems to have lost his head, OR is he being made a cat’s paw ?

The TNA Chief Ministerial Candidate Vigneswaran does not only hero worship the Terrorist Prabhakaran,‚ ‚  but he is also preparing to follow Prabhakaran-â„¢s path of terrorism.

He is reported to have said, – ‚ Opportunities might arise to resort to arms again in case rights are not offered to the Tamils. Due to ranting, ravings, tormenting, nagging and harassment by the ruling elites, we might be forced to take up to arms-

These words can come only from a cheap third rate terrorists, but not from a former Supreme Court Judge.‚  We begin to shudder when we thinks what we had as respected Judicial luminaries in Sri Lanka.‚  One‚  was a deceitful manipulator of finances filling and emptying‚  bank accounts and keeping them empty to avoid Tax payments, the other a racist hero worshipping a cheap ruthless terrorist psychopath.

Is that what the TNA is capable of giving to the Tamil people of the North as a Chief Minister ?

Vigneshwaeran is already a stooge of the International Community. He had said that, -‚  the ‚ Sri Lanka Army which is not needed to our people, should not be present here anymore to subdue us-¦-¦.We would also inform the international community that this government has failed to implement the 13th amendment to the Sri Lanka-â„¢s constitution-¦-¦Our rights would be attained with the active involvement and contribution of the international community. -

While again when‚  Vigneshwaran says, -‚  we will get the mandate of the people and pack up the Army away, if in case the government fails to cooperate with us, we will go up to the United Nations.--¦.. Sampanthan had said, – We will not allow Sri Lanka government to impose any political solutions on us, that are not acceptable by the Tamil people.-

All this ranting of Vigneshwaran appears to have been pre-arranged.‚  To what extent the Tamil diaspora has contributed to Vigneshawaran-â„¢s fiery elocution ?

Viswanathan Rudrakumaran the self appointed Prime Minister of a yet to be created Eelam barks from his comfortable‚  kennel somewhere in Canada:

-We cannot sustain hopes of winning over our rights from the existing State agencies through the mechanism of the PC or through other forms of struggle, even with the support of the International Community. The Eelam Tamil Nation could win over its rights only by liberating itself from the bondage of the Sri Lankan State. We believe that the TNA leadership is taking cognizance of this reality,-

Rudrakumaran ‚ had further said‚  that, – the TGTE is committed to struggle for the creation of a free and sovereign State of Tamil Eelam through political and diplomatic means, and that he is of the firm conviction that the 13th Amendment as well as the idea of Provincial Councils had expired long ago.-

In the midst of all this tirade our Sinhala politicians have yet to awaken for the looming danger.‚  They have failed to do what is essential and will be taken‚  by surprise,‚  perhaps for an unexpected uprising of the Tamils helped by the Tamil Diaspora, the Indian RAW, and the American CIA.

The TNA with the assistant and secret support of the International Community seems to be preparing for a demand for a Eelam State through Self determination.‚ ‚  But Self determination‚  for the Tamils in the North is definitely ‚ outside‚  the concept of the theory of Self determination.‚  In International law, it is stated that nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and fair equality of opportunity have the right to freely choose their sovereignty and international political status with no external compulsions or interference.‚ ‚

But the North‚  of Sri Lanka does not fall within this definition.‚  Firstly the Tamils in the North are a community and not a nation separated from the rest of the country. Its people are not confined to a geographically separate area, but spread across the whole of the island.‚

Therefore, a Tamil Eelam State cannot be set up separated from the rest of the Tamil people settled down in different places in Sri Lanka, unless all those Tamils settled down in different places in the South declare their willingness to leave the South to settle down within the confines of the North if it is declared a Tamil Eelam State.

In the mean time the Global Tamil Federation is also showing its presence in the fray of‚  the Northern PC Election. GTF has issued a statement, that it has, –¦-¦ developed a strong collaborative working relationship with the TNA. We have promoted TNA among the international community. Equally, our active engagement with the TNA adds credibility to the political positions we adopt and promote world-wide.-

There would be lot of activity to promote the Tamil Eelam State in the North.‚  The GTF had further stated :

‚  -GTF calls upon the Tamil diaspora to help the TNA achieve the best possible victory by impressing upon their relatives and friends in Sri Lanka about the significance of this election. Tamils and others who live outside the North but registered to vote in the North must take the trouble to travel to ensure their votes too are counted in favour of the TNA.

‚ Most importantly, we call upon the Tamils and other communities in the North to take an active part in the election, with the expectation the outcome will prove that a proud community with long history, however mistreated and brutalised, will not give up on the mission to achieve its legitimate political rights and will continue to work towards achieving justice, peace and equality for all.-

‚ -Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.-

‚ In this confounded‚  atmosphere of‚  still unknown underground activity, Minister and Senior Vice President of the SLFP, Nimal Siripala de Silva, bleats the usual words of appeasement , “The manifesto of the TNA is not a new concept, but if they seek to go beyond that and try to divide the country, we have the necessary medicine for that as well. Hence, there is no need to panic over it.”

Nimal Siripala de Silva says, – : “We will take the necessary measures at the right time to safeguard the sovereignty of the country, and against any attempts at division. In the circumstances, we have no need to get unduly worried or agitated. On the 21st, we can see the answer the people will give Wigneswaran and the TNA. -

But it is despite the Constitution of Sri Lanka that Nimal Siripala de Silva speaks of, ‚ that there was‚  terrorism, and then TNA ‚ defying the Constitution, openly acting‚  in breach of it.‚  Even now what Vigneshawaran had brazenly spoken out‚  is enough to have him‚  arrested and Charged under the Anti Terrorist Legislation.

But the Government since it eliminated terrorism seems to think they remain invincible.‚  Nimal Siripala de Silva is the Chairman of the PSC appointed to propose removal of certain provisions of the 13A, but what has happened to those proposals against the 13A has become a top secret no body dare speak about.

In the mean time the government had been speaking‚  about reducing‚  the presence of the Army in the North .‚  But‚  is that a wise move when, the Commander of the Sri Lankan army in the Jaffna peninsula, Maj Gen Mahinda Hathurusinghe, said, with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) glorifying the slain Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in its campaign for the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) elections, there was a possibility of reactivating about 4,000 former Tiger combatants, who are still at large.

He had pointed out to the speech made by Vigneshwaran which could give courage to those terrorists sympathisers lying low to rise in support of TNA.‚

Vignaeshwaran had said, -When Prabhakaran was alive, the President came forward on his own to grant 13 Amendment plus (an improved devolution package). Now that Prabhakaran is no more, the President has begun to speak of 13 Amendment minus and even to the extent of saying there is no such thing as the 13th‚  Amendment. This is because President Rajapaksa accepted Prabhakaran as a hero. He came forward to yield concessions to the Tamils. But he is not prepared for it now. Prabhakaran is not a terrorist. He was a hero and a warrior who fought for the liberation of the Tamils.-

Quite unconcerned ‚ Sri Lanka is still trying to pacify India, like the man being beaten continuing to plead‚  sitting on his knees for clemency.

The Government of Sri Lanka did not remove the 13A when the time was right to do so, ‚ before declaring the PC elections for the North.‚  As a result today the government is forced to put up not only with an unwanted 13A, but may also with a PC in the North controlled by the TNA, preparing with forces we still do not know‚  to demand a separate Eelam State for the Tamil speaking people of the North and East.

Whatever is afoot between the Sri Lanka political hierarchy and that of India the Sri Lankan people are unaware. The President Mahinda Rajapakse answering to a question asked by the Hindustan Times: – Relations between New Delhi and Colombo are no longer as close as before, largely due to the demands of politicians in Tamil Nadu ? - , the President said: – ‚ I cannot comment on South India’s politics. But politicians understand politicians so I give New Delhi a wide margin.‚  And our relationship with India is still very good . -

In the North of Sri Lanka‚  there were no terrorists.‚  But the Indian RAW recruited from among the Tamil youth in the North,‚  a group‚  to be trained as terrorists.‚  After being trained ‚ they were released in the North around 1983, which is no secret any more.‚  Therefore there is no guarantee that the same thing may happen again, as the Tamil Diaspora is prepared to do any thing to start another bout of terrorism with the support of the International Community and Navy Pillay .

In the recent Defence Seminar 2013‚  held on 3rd September at the Galadhari Hotel the presence of a LTTE sympathiser among the selected participants had been detected.‚  It was reported that investigations are being‚  made to find out how he had gained admission.‚  This is a serious security lapse and it clearly shows with all security on place the Tamil Diaspora has means to enter any where in Sri Lanka.

In that situation,‚  the Army cannot be confined to the barracks during the PC elections in the North, but they should be there in greater numbers and vigilant.‚  The soldiers should however be cautioned to be careful not to open fire without assuring where , how and against whom they open fire.

Still more worrying is what K.T.Rajasingham of the Asian Tribune was doing‚  with the TNA Leaders:

http://www.asiantribune.com/node/64661

‚ These are exclusive photographs taken by the Asian Tribune photographers at the recently held -ËœNallur Ther festival (2013) where TNA leaders -“Sampanthan, V.K.Vigneswaran, E. Saravanapavan, D.Siththarthan are seen. Also in some pictures can see K.T.Rajasingham , Chief Editor of the Asian Tribune with the TNA leaders

K.T.Rajasingham is said to be a good friend of the President. Even R.Premadasa had a good friend who was a Tamil Man.

November 21, 2013 will be a DAY OF INFAMY, comparable to that infamous day of March 14, 1815, when a junta of treacherous gullible chiefs of Sri Lanka handed over Sri Lanka’s hallowed Crown to the Perfidious Albion!

On November 21, 2013, the very UPFA GOSL, that WAGED and WON a WAR of National Liberation and Reunification of Sri Lanka will ABJECTLY CAPITULATE and hand over in PEACE control of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province to the political PROXY of the defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. This capitulation to the LTTE, militarily crushed in battle at great cost in blood and treasure, to comply with a Constitutional Amendment RAMMED DOWN Sri Lanka’s protesting throat by India … the very power responsible for inciting and fostering Tamil terrorism in Sri Lanka, boggles my mind.

On November 21, 2013 the Tiger Nominated Agents of the TNA will take control of the Northern Province and begin its incremental campaign to create the Separatist State of Eelam, that will inexorably seek UNION with Tamil Nadu in India.

This unbelievable TURN OF EVENTS, breathed new life on this Day of Infamy, November 21, 2013, will spawn the Eelam War V, for the PATRIOTS of Sri Lanka will NEVER ACCEPT the Division of Sri Lanka into a patchwork quilt of Communal States.

Those leaders of Sri Lanka who stood by and allowed this tragedy to occur will be Swept Away and Consumed in the ensuing maelstrom, for they who seed the wind shall reap the whirlwind!

It is NOT the SURVIVAL of LEADERS that is at stake here, but the SURVIVAL of the NATION & ALL of its PEOPLE.

  4. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

The word to address this man is “confidence”. If The TNA Chief Ministerial Candidate Vigneswaran is calling for the Tamils to rearm he is doing it in an atmosphere that is completely different from the days of the civil war.

Highways linking every part of Sri Lanka has been built. Considering the main purpose of highways was originally to deploy a nation’s military force to any corner of the nation it would be hard for the Tamils to regroup and retrench in the presence of a seasoned military and an infrastructure meant for military deployment. That was the reasoning for the massive highway system built during the 1950’s in the US and the German Autobahn system that took steam under Hitler.

Sri Lanka now has an intelligence service and a strategic partnership with China who for her own interests would not want to see Sri Lanka enter into another civil war. Unlike India, China and Pakistan do not have a “Tamil problem” and both nations will support Sri Lanka for the sole purpose of denying India to advance her full access to the Indian ocean. Pakistan suffered division under Indira Gandhi’s hands and China is under a “containment program” initiated by the US and with the support of India. Under Indira Gandhi Pakistan’s power was cut in half and by annexing Sikkim India gained a strategic advantage over Nepal and Bhutan both of whom are now surrounded on three sides of their borders by India

However India failed to do the same with Sri Lanka using the LITE which had it won would have given New Delhi that access to the Indian Ocean and control of the Trincomalee harbor. Once lost that can never be repeated. President Rajapakse has made sure of it. Finally if the Tamils start arming I doubt if the innocent Tamils not involved would fare any better than those who have taken this radical step. I doubt very much if the majority Sinhalese will tolerate such a slap in the face …. again without massive retaliation Human rights or not.

Since Colombo has the full support of both Russia and China the Tamils cannot use the UN to create a separate nation for that will demand the approval of the Security Council which has to have a unanimous vote which they will never get as long as China and Russia double veto the issue. It is times like this that one should thank China for blocking India’s path to being another member of the Security Council. Finally such a militant action would be replied with allowing the Chines navy to dock in all harbors that are in the provinces that would go to form Eelam.

This time a joint force of Sri Lankan and Chinese troops both there for their own interests would be a formidable force against the minority Tamils and could extend into Tamil Nadu itself.

K T Rajasingham or KTR is one of the best known writers, moderates and fair and balanced reporters of our time. I am an ardent reader and follower of KTR’s contribution to not only to the field of balanced and unbiased journalism but his contribution to literature, agriculture, religion and you name it – anything Sri Lankan or asian.

It is a sin to castigate this man who has done so much for Sri Lanka whether you are a Sinhalese, a Tamil, a Moor or a Burgher. I am disgusted for the way the writer has drawn attention to KTR’s presence insinuating that the man is a traitor. I respected Charles S. Perera and his past contributions to this esteemed internet paper run by one of my old schoolmates as well as a classmate. But his insinuations and directing suspicion to KTR is derogatory.

Charles you must be getting old.

One should not compare Ranasinghe Premadasa with MR. The two are world’s apart. Premadasa trusted many bad tamils including Prabhakaran. He had no proper education, trusted anyone including Prabhakaran which caused his untimely death. He came from Kehelwatta. His only education in politics was the street and the thugs. His only qualifications to accession to power was that he was a henchman to DS, Dudley and JR. I should also be fair to the man in that he tried to do something for the poor. For that he was in the wrong party. Power made him ruthless and almost insane as demonstrated by him during his second term.

MR is on the other hand is an educated, well balanced politician whose family back ground in the field of politics goes beyond 1944. He is articulate, with great sense to understand the simple, common average Sri Lankan. His dealings with the world in general and the West in particular says a lot. His unwavering determination to eliminate LTTE terrorism resulted in all of us enjoying proper peace since 1948. We do not have to be second class citizens to the so called Colombo Elite or to any preferred citizenry. I come from humble beginnings and feel that for once we have a leader who think like one of us for the country and about the country. If we are to have a General Election today MR will do even better that he did in 2010.

The President liking and respecting KTR tells us a lot. Please lay off KTR. KTR is respected by most tamils. He had a business to be where he was with the Asian Tribune photographers at the recently held ‘Nallur Ther festival (2013) where TNA leaders –Sampanthan, V.K.Vigneswaran, E. Saravanapavan, D.Siththarthan are seen. I critisezed KTR way back when and I realized I was strong. Jeyaraj Fernandopulle when I met him personally had a lot do with it.

Minister accuses Sri Lanka Tamil party of attempting to mobilize youth against the country

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 16, Colombo: A Sri Lankan government Minister today accused the major Tamil party Tamil National Alliance (TNA) of misleading the youth in the North and attempting to mobilize the youth for their separatist demand.

Spiking at a media briefing today leader of the coalition party National Freedom Front and Minister of Housing and Construction Wimal Weerawansa said the TNA is expressing views to the Sinhala community that are contradictory to the views of the Tamil Community in the North.

He said the old Tamil politicians of the party are determined to mobilize the youth in the North through another Prabhakaran.

Minister’s statement comes following a speech made by the TNA’s chief ministerial candidate for Northern Province C. V. Vigneswaran at Valvettithurai glorifying the slain terrorist leader Prabhakaran as a hero.

“Prabhakaran is indeed a hero. President Mahinda Rajapaksa knows that the LTTE leader Prabhakaran was a warrior. Prabhakaran is not a terrorist. He was a hero and a warrior who fought for the liberation of the Tamils,” Wigneswaran has been quoted in the media as saying.

Minister Weerawansa said the old politicians of TNA have an undying desire to put the cyanide capsule around the Tamil youth’s neck and guide them to their graves to fulfill their separatist dreams.

He said that the TNA politicians have no qualms about mobilizing the poor and underprivileged youth in the North through another Prabhakaran since their children never joined the terrorists but grew up and were educated while living in Colombo

The Minister said that Vigneswaran had studied, worked and lived in Colombo and would have no qualms about Tamil youth in the North adorning the cyanide capsule again.

He said the TNA politicians are trying to convert the Northern Provincial Council election to a public referendum for self-rule. He requested the northern public to defeat the separatist politics of the TNA.

If any Tamil chooses to follow Vigneswaram or their TNA stooges they too will get the same treatment from our heros who saved our land four years ago. No one should take lightly of our Govt and the Armed Forces and take a risk to start another blood bath. We will teach these terrorists a lesson where they will never forget this time. We peace loving citizaens prefer Ballot than the Bullet but if it comes to the Bullet this time we will never give them a chance. We Sinhalese,Tamils,Muslims who love their country must get united and be vigilant all the time to avoid slightest terrorist act in our soil again.
Our Govt has done so much to the North and East and if these Tamils wont appreciate what they have done then pointless doing more and more unless they want to have a prosperous Sri Lanka through the country as one nation. Any blind guy (except Ranil & his cronies) can see the progress we have achieved during this four years of freedom. This is not for the Rajapksa family but for the whole country as some thinks. Do not listen to the lies of the opposition bankrupt politicians and ruin this country again by violance. We need peace for the sake of our children not wars. Help each other and be united to face all the odds without fear.

But, none of the ‘ruling people’ (he presumably means GoSL) have “ranted, raved, tormented, nagged or harassed” Tamils classified as ‘low caste’ in the Northern PC elections by the ‘high caste’ Tamils. It is only the so called ‘high caste’ Tamils who ‘rant, rave, torment, nag or harass’ the so called ‘low caste’ Tamils.

TNA is true to form – turning Tamil ‘low caste’ anger/frustrations against the Southern government, same as earlier.

Southern expressway and all other developments beyond are monumental blunders. Who pay for them? Our people including those not yet born. What about Norochchalai and electricity hikes.
What progress have we made in the field of education. I know Hon. SB has been able to achieve something, at least there no frequent demos by uni students. But at school level what have they done?. Do they know that at A’ level exams our students still use log tables the same way we did over fifty years ago and now the 16 year olds in countries like UK develop software using their iPhones and some of them earn millions of dollars. Can our children ever hope to come to that level unless they go abroad. The civil servants under HE the president have become more politicians than the real politicians, even if you write ten letters nobody is there to give a reply or even an acknowledgement. As someone who knows the set up told there are many presidents in president office, confusing every thing. Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court issues notice to Tamil party over election manifesto

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 18, Colombo: The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka today issued notice on the leaders of the major Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to appear before the court on 2nd October to show cause regarding the constitutionality of the TNA election manifesto.

The apex court issued the notice when a petition filed by President of the Patriotic National Movement Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera against the TNA election manifesto was taken up for hearing.

The Supreme Court granted leave to proceed with the petition but did not deliver an injunction order suspending the Northern Provincial Council election as demanded by the petitioner.

The tri-member bench hearing the petitions comprised Chief Justice Mohan Peiris, Justices K. Sripavan and Rohini Marasinghe.

Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera filed a petition in the Supreme Court on September 17 appealing to declare the election manifesto of the TNA is against the constitution.

The petitioner cited in his petition that the TNA election manifesto has been unscrupulously targeted to establish a separate state in the unitary Sri Lanka.

The petitioner further demanded to deliver an injunction suspending the Northern Provincial Council election until the examination of the petition is concluded.

The petition requested the Court to ascertain whether the TNA manifesto is in contravention to the Sri Lanka Constitution as it has suggested forming a separate state in Sri Lankan soil.

Petitioner has further cited in the petition that the manifesto is in line with the hidden agenda of the LTTE. In its election manifesto, the TNA, once considered as a proxy for the terrorist group LTTE during the war, has called for establishing power sharing arrangements in a unit of a merged Northern and Eastern Provinces based on a Federal structure. TNA secretary Mavai Senathirajah, leader R. Sampanthan and Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya have been mentioned as the respondents of the petition.

Four more petitions have been filed in the court by Sinhala organizations requesting the court to suspend the Northern Provincial Council elections over the charge that the TNA manifesto violated the Constitution.

The petitioners claim that the TNA manifesto violates the sixth amendment of the Sri Lankan Constitution which says that no political party or other association or organization shall have as one of its aims or objects the establishment of a separate State within the territory of Sri Lanka.

Under the Constitution, the Supreme Court has power to proscribe any political party or other association or organization found guilty of having the objective to establish a separate State within the territory of Sri Lanka.

TNA leaders have vehemently rejected the allegation that its election manifesto demanded a separate state of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka.

However, comments made by the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate for the Northern Province, former Supreme Court judge C. Vigneswaran glorifying the slain terrorist leader Velupillai Prabhakaran as a hero not a terrorist, has fueled fears in the southern polity that the party is attempting to revive the arms struggle to achieve the separate state goal.

If the following report is TRUE, then Sri Lanka still teeters on the cusp of famine without a sufficiently large BUFFER in the volume of FOOD PRODUCTION.

Let there be NO MISTAKE, as the world’s population continues to double, and double again, FOOD will become the most PRECIOUS of National Resources. Even NOW, even in the United States, the inflation adjusted price of food has increased several fold, and people are spending an increasing fraction of their incomes to feed themselves.

The MESSAGE is CLEAR: Increasing demand and decreasing supplies, affected by changing weather patterns, are threatening the wold’s food supply.

The GOSL should take HEED, and ALLOCATE sufficient funds to ENSURE that Sri Lanka becomes not only SELF-SUFFICIENT in food, but also a LARGE SCALE EXPORTER of High Quality Food to the world, including sea food grown in intelligently managed, and actively protected, marine resources surrounding our Island homeland, that may become Sri Lanka’s largest foreign exchange earner in the not too distant future.

Concerns growing over worsening food security in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Long-term interventions are essential to stem deteriorating food security among victims of frequent extreme weather events in Sri Lanka, experts warn.

In the last 20 months, parts of Sri Lanka have been hit by a severe drought and two bouts of floods that experts at the World Food Programme (WFP) and the government say have worsened the food security of victims.

In the last five years, according to UN estimates, between 3.5 million and 4 million people out of a population of little over 20 million have been affected by natural disasters in Sri Lanka.

Ismail Omer, the WFP country head for Sri Lanka, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation that his organisation fears that in some parts of the country, food security has fallen to the levels seen in 2011, when the country had just begun to recover from a decades-long civil conflict that ended only in May 2009.

Overall the WFP estimates that at least 1.2 million people in the country are in need of food aid.

In 2011, WFP and other agencies estimated that at least 60 percent of the population in the country’s north and east were food insecure and in need of food assistance. This was the region where the conflict was most intense.

By the middle of last year, according to WFP estimates, just 40 percent of people in that region still needed help. But subsequent drought and the floods have destroyed harvests in Sri Lanka’s northern, eastern, north western, north central and southern regions.

“Just within the last twelve months, approximately half a million people were first affected by drought resulting in reduced harvest yields in September-October 2012, then a cyclone before Christmas 2012 followed by severe flooding in the beginning of 2013 affecting harvest yields,” Omer said.

In some parts of the island’s eastern and northwestern regions – both vital areas for production of rice, the national staple – harvest losses were estimated to be around 30 percent.

This year, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organsiation, the paddy rice harvest is expected to recover and yield more than 4.1 million metric tonnes for the first time in about five years.

    SMALL-SCALE FARMERS STRUGGLING

However according to Liyanapathirana Rupasena, a director at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agararian Research Institute (HARTI), many small-scale farmers are yet to recover.

“These are farmers who hold one hectare or less. More often than not they fund each crop with loans. When harvests fail, one after the other, they find it hard to recover,” he said.

According to a study by the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, 70 percent of the estimated two million rice farmers in Sri Lanka own one hectare or less.

One is Wijerathane Thenakoon, a 47-year-old rice farmer from North Central Anuradhapura District, who has been planting a one-acre (0.4 hectare) plot of rice for the last 30 years. His farming income, which has been dwindling year by year, is the sold source of support for his family of five, including three school going children.

“Honestly, I don’t think I can recover from the losses of the last two years. If this harvest does not give me a good income, I will sell off the plot,” said Thenakoon, who owes debts of around Rs 200,000 ($1,400). His annual income from his paddy harvest is around Rs 175,000 ($1,200), he said.

He received emergency relief after the floods in December but nothing thereafter.

Experts like Rupasena warn that when incomes dwindle, farmers like Thenakoon will cut down on expenditure that they feel is non-essential. “Education and health expenses are right on top of this list. Many feel they can defer these,” said W.L. Sumathipala, the former head of the government’s Climate Change Unit.

A survey conducted by the WFP and HARTI in 10 of the worst-affected districts hit by floods in January this year found that 41 percent of those surveyed were eating less preferred foods, skipping meals and incurring debt.

Just as worrying, “a review of the reported natural disaster impacts during the past eight years indicates a trend of increasing frequency of events,” said a U.N. Humanitarian Bulletin on the first half of this year.

Sumathipala said one of the biggest obstacles to bringing change was lack of funding. Funding constraints have already hampered relief work targeting those affected by the latest disasters. Due to lack of funding, the WFP did not proceed with a $2.6 million programme to provide assistance to 60,000 of the half million people affected by floods in January this year, officials said.

Rupasena said that due to the growing frequency of weather disasters – currently there are fears that a moderate drought has again begun in Sri Lanka’s northwestern regions – plans should be put in place to maintain buffer stocks and emergency supplies or funding to assist in such emergencies.

More effort also should be put into trying to better predict future disasters, he said.

Constant monitoring of food security levels in disaster-affected communities and long-term investment in flood mitigation prgrammes, such as renovating irrigation canals and rehabilitating damaged water networks, also could help, WFP official said.

Floods are most common natural disaster in Sri Lanka, accounting for 41 percent of all people affected by disasters.

I know Wigneswaran is a big disappointment and became a Big Fart. He played the Tamil Card at the very end just a couple of days before the PC elections.

But when all of us are very disturbed with the turn of events, a little ray of sunshine for all of us from HE the President of Sri Lanka.

Please read “How President Rajapaksa Captivated the Hearts of Tamil Children at “Sencholai” Home run by “KP” at Kilinochchi – an article in DBS Jeyaraj website.

MR is a great man. He can be trusted to be a rare human being and someone we all can be truly proud of. I for one respect our dear president for being able to rise to the occasion when he is most needed may it concern men, women or children. It may sound trivial to some but his visiting the children in North and meeting them personally must be applauded by all of us.

Long live MR and may he continue to serve us as our president for many more years to come. No one can equal him.

    JP – USA

  20. Ananda-USA Says:

    Jayantha,

I don’t think any of us trivialize the achievements of the President, or fail to recognize rhe compassion that drives him. I, in particular, love and honor the President fr rescuing Sri Lanka’s fallen crown from the gutter when all other leaders advanced to the rear. However, great men are not infallible, and sometimes their achievements lead to vested interests and onwards to softness that clouds the thinking.

Recall that Republican Rome built upon the efforts of citizen-soldiers leaving their ploughs to take up the sword in defence of their country, soon led to great wealth and imperial political sophistry. That in turn led to an unwillingness of the wealthy citizens to fight and die for their country and as it turned out, for themselves. They began to rely on foreign mercenary armies to do their fighting for them, and inevitably their hired hands toook over the helm. When the Vandals sacked mighty Imperial Rome, there were no ctiizen-soldiers to turn back the tide, but hired mercenaries who joined the enemy to sack Rome. Why fight and dies when you can share in the plunder of the wealthiest city in the Roman Empire?

Many at LankaWeb believe correctly that the Eelamists are gaining through strategy in these PC Elections, what they failed to WIN through murderous terrorism, by using foreign powers to frighten and blackmail the leaders of the GOSL. How is it that the same leaders who confronted the entire world in vanquishing the Eelamists in battle in 2009 are running scared today … even as the TNA issues manisfetos, and their CM Candidate makes pronouncements that echo those of the late un;amented SunGod … Velupillai Prabhakaran?

Kissing babies in the Eelamist dominated North is not going to change that reality. If it did, then all the heartfelt assistance and compassion showered upon the people of the North and East since the end of the war, would have changed their minds and created majority support for the GOSL and against the Separatists. Instead, what we see is majority support for the Separatist cause in all classes of Tamil people in these areas. It seems, as Lozenro frequently warns us, Eelamist Tamils are ungrateful and equate kindness with weakness.

Let us there fore HEED the stark lesson to be derived from human history from times immemorial: Perceived weakness begets greater aggression

Indeed we must love and assist the people of the North and East, as our fellow citizens irrespective of their brainwashed mindset, to achieve parity with the citizens living in the rest of the country as a matter of dharmishta governance, and Buddhist ethics and morals.

Any compassion we show must be BECAUSE we are better human beings, and NOT BECAUSE they deserve it. Accordingly, we must offer bread and bind their wounds with one hand, while holding the sword in the other; not COMPROMISING ONE IOTA on the BASIC PRINCIPLES required to achieve a secure and prosperous Sri Lanka.

The compassion and active help to overcome the ravages of 30 years of war that they largely inflicted upon themselves by supporting the Eelamist cause, must not be confused with the duty to all citizens of Sri Lanka to preserve the cohesion and territorial integrity of the country, because that will ultimately determine their safety and the realization of their expectations for a better life in the future. Nothing can be done to develop the nation and improve their lives unless the writ of a single government prevails over the entire country.

Our disappointment, as PATRIOTS, with the FAILURE of the GOSL to repeal the 13th Amendment, and HALT the Devolution of Power to unrepentant Separatist PROXIES of defeated terrorist organizations, is indeed PALPABLE. The reason for thhis failure is CLEAR: the GOSL is unwilling to confront the foreign enemies of a resurgent Sri Lanka. Our purpose in CONSTRUCTIVELY CRITICIZING the failure to dismantle the communal parties and system of power devolution on communal basis embedded in our Constitution, is to get our beloved Government to take those steps to PROTECT THE NATION before it is TOO LATE to do so.

It is not that we LOVE President Mahinda Rajapaksa LESS, but that we LOVE our Motherland of Sri Lanka MORE!

When President Rajapaksa, and all of us, are LONG GONE and can no longer DEFEND and PROTECT the Motherlandd … a system of governance must be in place to ensure Sri Lanka continues to flourish as ONE INDIVISIBLE NATION, of ONE INSEPARABLE PEOPLE, sharing ONE GLITTERING DESTINY forever!

We all write from our hearts something for everybody to read and I am very happy to read about the love everyone has for their homeland. If every individual has this attitude I am sure our country can survive from the evil minds.

My country is a paradise for me whether any politician or political party governs it. If our politicians are genuine and honest our country will be a heaven for all peace loving people to live. I hope this man Rajapaksa, before he leaves office he will do a miracle to bring back the glorious days of Motherlanka. He deserves the support of all peace loving people of Sri Lanka as he is the only leader who can deliver the goods to our nation of hope. Liers & Gossip mongers must end their evil conspiracies towards our nation and support this man to built the devastated country for the sake of our next generation. After all we are all human beings who loves peace and prosparity not WAR. May God Bless our Motherland.

  22. Fran Diaz Says:

    Agree with Ananda – USA.

The Law of the Land must ensure that there is one indivisible country for future generations.

Right now, the Law of the Land has already been broken by the ILLEGAL TNA Manifesto. Why the TNA is allowed to contest Elections with this ILLEGAL Manifesto is mind boggling. We can only surmise that ex-Empires are running the show in Sri Lanka together with/through India.

  23. Lorenzo Says:

“It is not that we LOVE President Mahinda Rajapaksa LESS, but that we LOVE our Motherland of Sri Lanka MORE!”

The other options are FAR WORSE.

But MR has fallen into their level now.

We need a powerful NON STATE ACTOR to carry out terrorist attacks against THREATS to SL’s interests.

State actors are too chicken to do it.

JR is a case in point.

JR released JVP leader who had a grudge against Sirima and SLFP for killing them in 1971. So JVP went killing SLFP politicians. JR supported anti-LTTE Tamil terrorist groups. Brought down Mosssad to kill both enemies of SL. Had he put the 13 amendment to a vote, he would not have done any significant bad thing for the country. Tamils were told where they belong.

NO TAMILIAN could dictate terms to JR.

  24. Lorenzo Says:

How JR manipulated 13 amendment was fantastic. He knew he had to choose between 2 lumps of crap – LTTE or EPRLF.

The lesser bad of the two is EPRLF. JR allowed them. Soon LTTE and EPRLF were killing Tamils!!

But MR has allowed LTTE (TNA) to take over.

  25. Ananda-USA Says:

I spoke of “Foreign Enemies” of Sri Lanka … well here is a manifestation of that enmity driven by the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora and by the global agendas of the Foreign Powers themselves.

The TOTAL DEFEAT of the LTTE on the battlefield would not have possible if the GOSL had followed the advice of these Foreign Powers reeking with double-standards in their solving theier own problems in their own interest.

LIKEWISE, SECURING TOTAL PEACE & PROSPERITY for Sri Lanka and its People in the LONG TERM will not be possible by empowering Separatists to create Communal Fiefdoms in Sri Lanka just to placate these Foreign Powers.

As in the conduct of Eelam War IV, the GOSL must use the CLEAR EVIDENCE of TREASON & SEPARATIST INTENTIONS now available in the RUNUP to the PC Elections, and REVOKE the 13th Amendment, DISMANTLE the Provincial Council System, and BAN all Communal Parties … before Sri Lanka unravels again.

Following the advice of Foreign Powers piously pontificating on negotiations, and asking for their help to combat terrorism which never came, over 30 long years, left Sri Lanka in ruins, our citizens destitute and victimized by terror. Instead, we must CONTINUE to use OUR OWN WIT to SOLVE OUR OWN PROBLEMS and REJECT THE ADVICE of Foreign Powers seeking to placate their local political constituencies and plying their own global agendas.

These Comments are being made now because they fear that the GOSL might respond to the recent Separatist Actions of the TNA by REVOKING the 13th Amendment.

PUT THESE JAUNDICED FOREIGNERS OUT OF THEIR MISERY by REVOKING the 13th Amendment, DISMANTLING the Provincial Council System, and BANNING all COMMUNAL PARTIES!

If BANNING the Nazi Party serves the Western Powers well in preserving their future SECURITY, Sri Lanka well served by BANNING the TNA to PROTECT itself.

If DISMANTLING the Berlin Wall and the Post-WAr division of Germany into two nations serves Germany WELL then DISMANTLING the Provincial Council System imposed by India upon SRi Lanka by FORCE OF ARMS, would serve Sri Lanka JUST AS WELL.

Let us REJECT DOUBLE-STANDARDS: What is good for the fat Western GOOSE must be GOOD for the under-fed Sri Lankan GANDER as well!

Sri Lanka lashes out at Germany and U.S. for undermining Northern PC elections

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 19, Geneva: Sri Lanka today expressed dismay at the concerns expressed by the United States, Germany and Ireland at the General Debate of the 24th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva and asked the detractors at HRC not to discredit the Northern PC election process or prejudge its outcome.

In a Right of Reply with regard to references made to Sri Lanka by Germany, the U.S. and Ireland under the General Debate at the ongoing session, Sri Lanka’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva Manisha Gunasekera on Thursday said, it is ironic that Germany chose to discredit the election process for the Northern Provincial Council and prejudge its outcome and impact when Sri Lanka is holding the first ever election to the Council since the introduction of the Provincial Council system in 1987.

Delivering a statement at the General Debate on “Human rights situations that require the Council’s attention” on Tuesday, German Ambassador Hanns Schumacher said the upcoming elections in the Northern Province could help to reconcile and enfranchise the Tamil population, but only if they are free and fair and if the 13th amendment is not revoked.

Sri Lanka pointed out that commitment of the Sri Lankan government to ensure the transparent and free and fair conduct of the election not only to the Northern Provincial Council, but also to the Central and North Western Provincial Councils which go to polls this Saturday is clearly demonstrated by the presence of 24 election observers from the South Asian region as well as from Commonwealth countries, on the invitation of the Elections Commissioner.

Sri Lanka further noted that there has been no practice in the country for external monitors to observe provincial council elections but the Election Commissioner invited the foreign observers as confidence building measure and to assure transparency.

Sri Lankan delegation lashed out at Germany for lack of objectivity displayed by ignoring the steps taken by the government to achieve comprehensive reconciliation as recommended by the LLRC and to investigate alleged atrocities during the final phase of the war.

Sri Lanka said it is surprised that the U.S. should declare that ‘Sri Lanka should set visit dates and provide access for relevant special rapporteurs’ when the UNHRC has been updated twice in the current session of the government’s proactive engagement with special procedures mandate holders and the invitations it has extended in this regard.

The U.S. said at the General Debate that Sri Lanka should set dates for Special Rapporteurs to visit and provide relevant access.

The Sri Lankan government will decide the schedule for such visits according to the requirement of the country and appropriate timing, the delegation said.

Responding to the concerns expressed by Ireland on the treatment of the prisoners incarcerated in connection with the conflict, enforced disappearances, torture and human rights violations, Sri Lanka denied that there were human rights violations against the prisoners detained in connection with terrorist activities.

The legal legal representatives and family members, as well as the National Human Rights Commission and the ICRC have free access to all those in custody, the delegation told the Council.

The envoy told the Council that instances of reported cases of torture have diminished considerably throughout the last five years and the government has recently appointed a Commission to investigate allegations of disappearances, which will complement ongoing action.

The Sri Lankan delegation said it is disconcerting to keep noting the same allegations, particularly when the Council has been continuously sensitized to the action taken on the very same issues.

“We can only keep hoping for an objective and constructive approach from the HRC,” the envoy said.

TNA manifesto worse than Vaddukodai resolution – KP

Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP castigated the TNA saying that the election manifesto of the Tamil National Alliance was a more serious demand than the Vadukkoddai document which called for a separate state.
    K Pathmanathan

Addressing a media conference at the Sencholai Child Development Centre in Kilinochchi yesterday, Kumaran Pathmanathan, formerly with the LTTE, said that the TNA manifesto was more serious than Vadukkoddai agreement and the LTTE Oslo Pact. “Certain words have been included in the manifesto to cover up its seriousness.”

He said that holding of the Northern polls was democratically a significant opportunity gained by the Northerners, adding that people living in the North would gain many benefits through this provincial council. “I call upon the Tamils to rally round President Mahinda Rajapaksa, as there is no hope for them by voting for an unstable political party. It is high time that they make the best use of this golden opportunity and vote the UPFA into power and live in freedom, peace and harmony.”

He further told the media that it was only now that people who underwent hardships were gaining benefits. “In such a situation, TNA is trying to return to that era. Northern Tamils had to face enormous difficulties in the past. TNA is trying to unleash hardships on their people again.

KP said: “The TNA is misleading innocent and poor Tamils. It is a sin to hoodwink the public in this manner.

The TNA is misleading the public saying their needs would not be met through this PC. They claim there should be struggles to win their privileges.” KP emphasized that the TNA wanted to begin this struggle after winning the polls.

They also claim that youth in the province are geared for the struggle.

Making reference to Vartharaja Perumal, he claimed that Perumal misused powers of the first PC established in the North. ” TNA is now planning to do the same thing citing Eelam. Their aim is to achieve their objectives, but not serve the public by winning the poll.

They intend to secure positions and meet their ends,” Pathmanathan added.

He also blamed the TNA for not accepting that they were at fault. Instead of accepting their fault, they point their finger at others.

The TNA Chief Ministerial candidate Vigneshwaran, was very hard on the LTTE when he was sitting in judgment while a member of the judiciary and today he is praising the LTTE as heroes merely to win their votes.

He pointed out that there was no unity among the members of the TNA and they have hardly cared to get the organization registered as a recognized political party.

How can such a party run the province? “I call upon the Tamils to rally round President Mahinda Rajapaksa as there is no hope for them by voting to an unstable political party. It is high time that they make the best use of this golden opportunity by voting the UPFA into power and live in freedom, peace and harmony,” he said.

  27. Lorenzo Says:

If we shoot down the TNA manifesto but keep its CREATORS, we are falling into the SYMPTOMS-DISEASE trap.

Target the CREATORS of this manifesto first to stop it because the manifesto will not be the ONLY danger they create!

  28. Ananda-USA Says:

Lorenzo said on SYMPTOMS Vs DISEASE remedies:

  29. Ananda-USA Says:

Ho! Ho! Ho! Looks like the UNP does not like any criticism of the TNA or the LTTE!

SHAME! Oh, how LOW this Grand Old Party of PATRIOTS that led Sri Lanka to Independence has fallen! Now it has descended into the PIT of ANTI-NATIONAL VIPERS!

Isn’t there ANYBODY in this Grand Old Party that can RESCUE IT and LEAD IT in a PATRIOTIC DIRECTION?

Hellooo … Anyone LISTENING at Siri Kotha? ANYONE?

How about Rohan Senanayake … my dear old classmate? Can he EMULATE his PATRIOTIC ancestors?

Opposition demands Sri Lanka Election Commissioner to probe ex-LTTE leader’s media brief

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 19, Colombo: Tissa Attanayake, the General Secretary of Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) has demanded the Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to probe the media statement given by the former international wing leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP.

Addressing a press conference in Kilinochchi on Wednesday (18) former LTTE Chief Arms Procurer slammed the leadership of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which is campaigning for the Northern Provincial Council election.

Pathmanathan claimed that the TNA’s election manifesto for the Provincial Council elections is worse than the Vaddukoddai Resolution in 1976 and the Oslo Declaration of 2002, only with “code words to cheat the people.”

He urged the Tamil people not listen to “old TNA lies” and to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

UNP General Secretary in his letter to the Election Commissioner said KP’s press briefing violated the election laws.

The opposition further accused that public property was also used in this press briefing in which the parties contesting the election were heavily criticized.
