There is a conspiracy by certain groups with vested interests to create religious disharmony among Sri Lankans. Therefore, the public should act with utmost patience to strengthen the hard won peace and harmony that exists in the country, say a group of multi-religious leaders.

The religious leaders state: “Peace and religious harmony is the strength of a country. Internal and external perpetrators along with the diaspora are trying to bring instability to the country by taking it back to the dark days. We urge the public to act wisely in order to avoid falling into such traps”.

“Under these circumstances it is the responsibility of the media to act accordingly and with responsibility,” state senior working committee member of Asgiri Chapter Ven. Medagama Dhammananda Thera, Kurunegala Bishop Rev. Shantha Francis, Kandy Chief Moulavi Hasrool Rahman in their message.

The events in Aluthgama and surrounds have seriously dented the government’s appeal to the Muslim voter. Since 2005, Muslims have been gradually leaving the UPFA. At the recent Western Provincial Council election, no Muslim was elected from the UPFA. I don’t expect anything more than 15% (excluding Digamadulla District) of Muslims to vote for UPFA at elections scheduled next year.

Tamils have also remained hostile towards the UPFA. In fact left the UPFA since 2010. This trend continues.
The only hope UPFA has in order to win next year’s elections is the Sinhala voter. Unless a percentage over 60% of Sinhalese vote for UPFA, it cannot win next year’s elections. Losing the election is not an option for the ruling clan whose fate rests with holding on to power. Otherwise the West and their local collaborators will punish the ruling clan for war crimes. This gives the Sinhala community the right to bargain and make their demands heard. The opportunity must not be missed.

If the ruling coalition continues to disregard Sinhala sentiments its days are numbered.

Government should take particular care not to let anyone arouse anti-Muslim sentiments anymore, and, contain the violent sections of the Muslim community. Next year (2015) marks 100 years of the shameful 1915 riot. Interested parties will try to exploit it to arouse hatred. It is a vote winner for race-based political parties too (SLMC and TNA). SLMC being part of the government gets all the benefits but always joins UNP in presidential elections. Its electoral worth or otherwise must be assessed soon.

  5. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

“Disharmony’ is a tricky word. When does harmony become “disharmony”? The steady expansion of Islam and Christianity in the oldest unbroken Buddhist world is forced upon the populace as a “harmonious” act, while it rips the Buddhist culture to shreds in the process. That is the Colombo definition of “harmony”.

“Disharmony” defined by Colombo is when the (still) majority Buddhists fight back due to a complete lack of inertia from Colombo. I must interject this issue at this moment. In every Muslim nation their capitals go out of the way to ensure that Islam prevails as the dominant religion of those nations. Even so attacks on any minorities still continue as in the case in Egypt. The world takes little notice of it. The world (the UN) to date has not even addressed the blatant intolerance of these Muslim nation which number around 50.

Each time the Buddhist react to the expansion and arrogance of the Sri Lankan Muslim community “talks” similar to that of the Norwegian peace keeping force are brought up. By then the Muslims have already made significant advances into the culture. it is a losing game. Unless those in Colombo can address the Muslim nations as to why they will not permit Buddhist missionaries to enter their nations and convert Muslims to Buddhism then Colombo has no voice in protecting the selfish self serving interests of the Muslims or the Tamils in Sri Lanka. Quid Pro Quo.
