Firstly,\nwhy not issue a similar petition on behalf of the Catholics who also bury their\ndead? Isn\u2019t their mental state affected as well? If mental state is what the\npetitioners are highlighting how about the feelings of the families of the\nother victims who had to forsake their traditional customs as well. Did these\npetitioners comment one word on behalf of the other dead victims? Secondly, why\nnot speak on behalf of the Sinhalese &amp; Tamils who comprise almost 90% of\nthe population &amp; had their Avurudu (New Year) celebrations cancelled by the\nGovernment-aren\u2019t their sentiments hurt too? Doesn\u2019t this selective championing\nof \u2018justice\u2019 highlight very clearly the bias of these petitioners? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These\n163 \u2018civil society voices\u2019 were appealing to address the \u2018country\u2019s distressed\nMuslims\u2019 and \u2018put to rest their fears\u2019 that they are being \u2018punished\u2019, and that\nthe country has \u2018little respect for their concerns\u2019. They cite the cremation of\na Muslim on 30<sup>th<\/sup> March 2020. The activists claim that the Muslim\nfaith requires the dead to be buried and not cremated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Close\nto 70 signatories are Muslim, just over 40 signatories are Tamils, close to 40\nsignatories are Sinhalese: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prominent\nnames on the list include<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Academics:<\/strong> <strong>Dr.\nNimalka Fernando<\/strong>, Attorney-at-law, <strong>Dr. Paikiasothy\nSaravanamuttu<\/strong>, <strong>Dr.\nJehan Perera<\/strong>, National Peace Council Prof\nAmeer Ali, Dr. Farzana Haniffa, University Of Colombo, <strong>Prof. Arjuna Aluwihare<\/strong>, Dr. Kaushalya Fernando, <strong>Prof. Arjuna Parakrama<\/strong>, University Of\nPeradeniya, <strong>Prof. Gameela Samarasinghe<\/strong>,\nUniversity Of Colombo. &nbsp;Dr. Harini\nAmarasuriya, Open University Of Sri Lanka<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legal:<\/strong> <strong>Lal\nWijenayake<\/strong>, Attorney-at-law, Justice. Hoole<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these names of course are well\nknown for their open bias but it is strange to see the signatories of Church\nheads who ideally should have insisted on the petitioners mentioning the denial\nof Catholics to bury dead too. Why is the entire petition voicing only 1\ncommunity only? &nbsp;Then you get a member of\nthe Election Commission also signing and he does what he likes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-wordpress wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-colombo-telegraph\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"pOKImK3Btk\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/follow-who-guidance-respect-burial-rights-civil-society-urge-president\/\">Follow WHO Guidance &#8211; Respect Burial Rights: Civil Society Urge President<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Follow WHO Guidance &#8211; Respect Burial Rights: Civil Society Urge President&#8221; &#8212; Colombo Telegraph\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/follow-who-guidance-respect-burial-rights-civil-society-urge-president\/embed\/#?secret=pOKImK3Btk\" data-secret=\"pOKImK3Btk\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nday after the petition the Island newspaper carried a statement by the Sri\nLanka Human Rights Commissioner Deepika Udugama Cremation of Muslim covid-19\nvictims \u2013 Govt should have consulted the community\u2019 &nbsp;&#8211; leaders of the Muslim community, medical\nprofessionals of the Muslim community, scientists of the Muslim community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.island.lk\/index.php?page_cat=article-details&amp;page=article-details&amp;code_title=220968\">http:\/\/www.island.lk\/index.php?page_cat=article-details&amp;page=article-details&amp;code_title=220968<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If\nthe SLHR Head is highlight religious sensitivities why is she not asking if the\nGovt consulted the Buddhist leaders, the Hindu leaders and all others who were\ngoing to celebrate the Sinhala-Tamil Aluth Avuruda? Why is she not coming\nforward to speak on behalf of the Buddhist-Hindu sensitivities for having their\ncherished and ancient custom completely cancelled. Avurudu is a time where\nthere is much sharing and giving, families prepare all sorts of food items\nwhich are shared to family and friends, there are rituals like preparation of\nmeals, going to the temples, worshipping one\u2019s parents, visiting one\u2019s\nrelations, the exchange of money which even the banks and companies look forward\nto, there is exchange of clothes and gifts and there are plenty of games and\nfun that all communities take part in and look forward to. The government has\nnot only imposed curfew throughout this period but the police have declared\nthat even if anyone is going visiting family or friends with sweetmeats they\u2019ll\nend up eating them in prison. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How\nabout the sensitivities of the country\u2019s majority faith and populace who are\ntold they cannot celebrate Avurudu? Why is the SLHR not coming forward on\nbehalf of them and speaking for their sensitivities too? Why are the 163\npetitioners and other organizations also ignoring the mental condition and\nsensitivities of these people? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Covid-19 Dead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victim\n1 \u2013 Sinhala Buddhist<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victim\n2 &#8211; Muslim<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victim\n3 &#8211; Muslim<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victim\n4 \u2013 Sinhala Buddhist<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victim\n5 \u2013 Sinhala Catholic<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victim\n6 \u2013 Sinhala Catholic<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victim\n7 \u2013 Muslim <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though\nthe victims died on different days the same procedure was followed for all <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bodies were not washed, embalmed or touched <\/li><li>Bodies were placed inside a sealed bag and coffin was\nsealed<\/li><li>Bodies were taken to crematorium within 12hrs of\ntheir death<\/li><li>ONLY 2 of the closest relatives were allowed to\nwitness<\/li><li>GMO explained to relative the cause of death &amp; procedure\nbeing carried out<\/li><li>Bodies were placed in incinerator that generated heat\nof over 1200 centigrade <\/li><li>Protective garments of pallbearers were destroyed\nimmediately afterwards<\/li><li>All involved were sprayed with disinfectant <\/li><li>Crematorium was disinfected <\/li><li>Vehicle that transported coffin was also disinfected.<\/li><li>NONE of the victims had final rites as per their\nfaith<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nis completely wrong of the 163 petitioners to claim that Muslims are being \u2018punished\u2019\nand that the country has \u2018little respect for their concerns\u2019 and that the\nGovernment should \u2018put to rest their fears\u2019. The petitioners were voicing only\n9% of the people of Sri Lanka. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\nabout the 91% why are the petitioners ignoring their sensitivities? &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven\npersons died of covid-19 of this only 3 were Muslims. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2\nSinhala Buddhists and 2 Sinhala Catholics also died. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Final\nrites and customs were not performed on these 4 non-Muslims too. No victims\u2019\nfuneral took place following their cultural values or religious practices.
