LTTE\ndeclared him anti-Tamil and anti-Hindu\u2026. Sri Lankan\u2019s question him on his bias\nand lack of integrity. What can we comprehend of his actions? Let\u2019s go back a\nbit to understand. Amnesty International on 12 April 2006 issued a release regarding\nRatnajeevan Hoole. It was issued immediately after his appointment as Vice\nChancellor of Jaffna University and following repeated death threats by LTTE\nclaiming to return his body \u2018headless in a box\u2019 if he takes up position as Vice\nChancellor. The Jaffna Students Union put posters calling him \u2018anti-Tami,\nanti-Hindu and not \u2018loyal to the Tamil people\u2019. In fact, LTTE websites ran\narticles on Hoole titled \u2018Who is this Fool\u2019. This speaks volumes about his\nactions thereafter! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us first\nlook at what the Amnesty document is trying to convey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amnesty\ndeclares they \u2018fear for safety\u2019<\/strong> of\nHoole & his family not by Sinhalese but by the LTTE after his appointment\nas Vice Chancellor, Jaffna University. Who was threatening Hoole? A front\norganization of the LTTE called People\u2019s Uprising Force (Makkal Eluchip Padai)\npresumably had telephoned Hoole on 11 March 2006 warning him not to enter\nJaffna university or return \u2018headless in a box\u2019. On 12 March 2006 he is\nthreated with assault by the Jaffna University Students Union head if he steps\ninto the University. A month earlier the President of the University Council received\na letter from the Students Union that the VC has to be someone loyal to the\nTamil people. Obviously Hoole was not wanted by the LTTE and Tamils supporting\nLTTE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So this\nTamil Professor, living in Peradeniya, functioning as the VC of Jaffna\nUniversity receives 2 threats \u2013 one from an LTTE front and another from the\nTamil student union leader and a certificate that he is not wanted as VC Jaffna\nUniversity as \u2018he is not loyal to the\nTamil people\u2019.<\/strong> So the Tamils too regard Hoole as someone \u2018against the Tamil\nrace\u2019. Hoole finds his photo pasted across campus walls too. So Hoole was alleged to be \u2018anti-Tamil,\nanti-Tamil race and anti-Hindu\u2019.<\/strong> Hoole was a Christian. All this is not\ndeclared by Sinhalese but by Tamils themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amnesty\ndocument adds that a website operated by the LTTE \u2013 nitharsanam.com on 12 March\n2006 posted a photo of Hoole titled \u2018Who is this Fool\u2019 claiming \u2018Army spy\nappointed VC\u2019 and now Hoole says he\u2019s afraid of Sri Lanka\u2019s Army Commander.\nUnbelievable!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The LTTE\nwebsite according to Amnesty International links Hoole to the 1990 publication\nof The Broken Palmyra which criticized LTTE. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The website on\n18 March 2006 published another article \u2018Who is this Fool \u2013 Part 2\u201d again accusing\nhim of being connected to the University Teachers for Human Rights run by Hoole\u2019s\nbrother Rajan Hoole which had documented abuses by LTTE but tends to twist and\nturn stories to its advantage. UTHR also lied about the supposed death of K.\nThyabaran who was found very much alive by the Dhanushkodi Police, India. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\nAmnesty on 22 March 2006 Hoole\u2019s daughter Anbini receives an anonymous call\nthreatening to \u2018kill her younger brother and chop him into pieces\u2019 if father\nHoole takes post as VC Jaffna University. More calls were received from the PUF.\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoole ran to\nreport the threats to Norwegian embassy in Colombo & the Sri Lanka\nMonitoring Mission (SLMM) who was monitoring the 2002 cease fire agreement.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is really interesting about this Amnesty international document is\nthat Hoole also received calls from the\nTNA on behalf of LTTE asking Hoole to resign.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also poignant is Amnesty\nreport stating \u2018LTTE-affiliated Tamil National Alliance\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 that rests\nour case about LTTE and TNA link! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is strange about this Amnesty international communique is that it\nis recommending 3 appeals<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. To express grave concern about the death\nthreats issued to Hoole and family<\/li>
  2. Asking LTTE to guarantee that Hoole would\nnot be attacked<\/li>
  3. Asking LTTE to publicly state it will\nadhere to international humanitarian law which prohibits targeting of\ncivilians. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Its communique lists addresses to where appeals are to be sent<\/p>\n\n\n\n
