Sri Lanka has now become the killing fields of\nrare and exotic animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is\u00a0heartrending to see the pride of Sri Lanka\u2019s fauna, namely, wild elephants and leopards<\/strong><\/em> being trapped and killed.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last\nyear (2019) alone 384 elephants died mostly at the hands of humans and\nsometimes under cruel circumstances by use of ‘Hakka\nPatas<\/strong>‘.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is an improvised small explosive device which contains black gun powder, lead and iron made to a ball of a firecracker shape and used illegally to keep wild elephants away.\u00a0Hakka Patas\u201d are strategically inserted into a cucumber, pumpkin, or melon, which are delicacies for wild animals, and explode in their mouths once\u00a0they are swallowed. Elephant\u00a0calves, in particular, are tricked to consume the explosives and suffer without food before succumbing to a painful death.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now,\nLeopards are being trapped by hunters’ snares to satisfy a growing demand\nfor their body parts in illegal wild trade carried out both within and outside\nSri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Law\nenforcement bodies like the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), Police\nand the Attorney \u2013 General\u2019s Dept., have failed to take effective and drastic\naction against the poachers to contain the destruction of our wild life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ndeath of the Black Leopard on May 29, 2020 which was an avoidable death, if not\nfor the negligence of the country\u2019s law enforcement authorities, has caused\nimmense sadness in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ncase concerning the death of this Black Leopard will be resumed at the Hatton\nCourt on Wednesday, July 29, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justice\nfor Animals and Nature (JAN) under the leadership of Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha\nThero intends to intervene in this case to ensure that the voices of both the\ndead animal and animal lovers are heard and that the people responsible for the\ndeath of the Black Leopard are brought to Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
