This was the main\nfocus of the discussion when Ambassador of Afghanistan to Sri Lanka Ashraf\nHaidari called on Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning at Temple\nTrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two governments are currently working\non the possibility of establishing a direct air link between Sri Lanka and\nAfghanistan, which will enable the two countries to explore trade and\ncooperation in a number of areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambassador Haidari also congratulated\nPrime Minister Rajapaksa on a very successful&nbsp;\nelection and a notable, historic victory.\u201d Calling it a big win for\ndemocracy,\u201d Ambassador Haidari further said, We are inspired by the success of\ndemocracy in Sri Lanka. We continue to look forward to your strong support for\nthe democratic process in Afghanistan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also conveyed best wishes from\nPresident Ashraf Ghani and former President Hamid Karzai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other sectors targeted for further\ncooperation include working together to combat regional drug trafficking, and\nexploring opportunities in the gem industry, education sector and medical tourism.\nNoting that Afghans are heavy drinkers of tea, most of which is currently\nsupplied by Vietnam, Ambassador Haidari said there is also vast potential for\nSri Lankan tea producers to tap into the Afghan market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister\u2019s Media Office Better connectivity that results in better trade relations could mutually benefit Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
