{"id":106545,"date":"2020-09-12T14:18:45","date_gmt":"2020-09-12T21:18:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=106545"},"modified":"2020-09-12T14:18:45","modified_gmt":"2020-09-12T21:18:45","slug":"sri-lanka-navy-plugs-leak-on-fire-hit-supertanker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2020\/09\/12\/sri-lanka-navy-plugs-leak-on-fire-hit-supertanker\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka navy plugs leak on fire-hit supertanker"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy Reuters<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>COLOMBO (Reuters) &#8211; The Sri Lankan navy said on Saturday it had sealed an inlet on the fire-stricken New Diamond oil supertanker that was leaking fuel oil and sparking fears of an environmental disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team of divers that inspected the rear of the tanker, which caught fire last week, found a sea water inlet leaking a mix of fuel oil and sea water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They took immediate action to completely seal the inlet,\u201d the navy said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tanker, which is carrying about 2 million barrels of oil, is currently 45 nautical miles (83 km) off Sri Lanka\u2019s east coast, the navy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fire onboard the 20-year old Panama-flagged very large crude carrier that broke out on Sept. 3 has since been extinguished, and the cargo of crude oil remains intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the New Diamond left two long trails of fuel oil after the Navy towed it out to sea this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri Lanka\u2019s Marine Protection Authority has said it plans to take action against the ship\u2019s owner under the country\u2019s laws to protect the marine ecosystem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy Reuters COLOMBO (Reuters) &#8211; The Sri Lankan navy said on Saturday it had sealed an inlet on the fire-stricken New Diamond oil supertanker that was leaking fuel oil and sparking fears of an environmental disaster.
