(Mrs.) Samantha K.\nJayasuriya, Ambassador and the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the\nUNESCAP, told the UN CSD that the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic proved the need for\nsocial protection than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The focused theme of the\nCommittee was on social protection, and further addressing the forum,\nAmbassador Jayasuriya reminded that despite the fact that, governments from\nacross the region has taken concerted measures to address and cushion the\nsocio-economic fallout from the pandemic, as we continue to tread unknown and\nuncertain grounds in the context of COVID 19, the Committee on Social\nDevelopment can provide an opportunity to forge ways to strengthen social\nprotection as a key instrument for building resilience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Committee endorsed the\ntwo priority documents; namely; the \u2018Action Plan to strengthen the regional\ncooperation on social protection in Asia and the Pacific\u2019 and the \u2018Asia Pacific\nindicator framework for monitoring progress towards the implementation of the\nInternational Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), and the\ncommitments contained in the Asian and Pacific Ministerial Declaration on\nPopulation and Development\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making an intervention under\nagenda item 02, Ms. Saritha Ranatunga, Assistant Permanent Representative,\nhighlighted the significant progress achieved by Sri Lanka in guaranteeing\nsocial protection and welfare of the citizens by providing universal access to\nhealth care and education as well as social benefits for the elderly citizens,\ndifferently abled and other vulnerable groups. She also highlighted the\nsteadfast resilient actions taken by the Government of Sri Lanka for the\nwelfare of over six million vulnerable families during the COVID 19 pandemic,\nand other mitigation activities to control the spread of COVID 19, including the\nsetting up of the \u2018COVID \u2013 19 Healthcare and Social Security Fund\u2019. Sri Lanka\nemphasized on the importance of realization of the action plan on social\nprotection, and creating a dynamic regional platform for peer learning, and to\nshare experience, as useful tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. M. Ramamoorthy, Director\n(Planning) of the State Ministry of Samurdhi, House Hold Economy, Microfinance,\nSelf Employment and Business Development and Ms. Nadeeka Amarasinghe, Assistant\nDirector of the Sustainable Development Council, Sri Lanka joined the forum\nfrom Colombo via online.
