The Rights of Human Beings\n(Human Rights) and the Rights of Sentient Beings (Siyalu Sathwayo) are two\ndifferent concepts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Abrahamic religions place\na heavy emphasis on Human Rights to the almost total exclusion of any moral\nattention being given to the rights and interests of other sentient beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buddhism, in contrast,\ntogether with other Dharmic religions such as Jainism, adopt a more inclusive\napproach. Buddhism accepts the claims of non – human beings for just and fair\ntreatment, call on all adherents to extend compassion and loving – kindness to\nanimals, and where ever a Buddhist Social Order prevails, living beings become\nthe subjects of the State with acceptance of a concomitant State Responsibility\nfor the welfare of Animals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A striking example of the\ndifference in approaches is the recent cull of 17 million Mink animals in\nDenmark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a Holocaust in every\nsense of the word, except that the species are different. No moral voices have\nbeen raised so far to spare  the lives of these innocent animals, who are\nkept in small cages from birth till they are slain for the fur industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nfur industry is cruel. <\/strong>More than\n50 million animals are raised and brutally killed for<\/strong> use in fashion every year. Methods\nemployed to kill animals for<\/strong> their fur<\/strong> include gassing, electrocution, and\nneck breaking, and many are skinned alive. Buying even the tiniest amount\nof fur<\/strong> trim supports\nthe cruel fur industry<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mink\nanimals spend their entire lives in filthy cramped cages, deprived of the\nability to engage in natural behaviors. Furthermore, the highly congested,<\/strong> squalid conditions are fertile ground for\nepidemics such as the bird flu. The COVID\n– 19 spread to the humans through the wet markets in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The failure of the\nworld leaders and mainstream media to raise their moral voices with the Danish\nauthorities to spare the lives of these innocent animals, is a clear example of\nthe wide gulf that exists today between opinion makers and the Buddhist\nteachings that unequivocally extend protection to all living beings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
