{"id":113420,"date":"2021-04-11T14:55:25","date_gmt":"2021-04-11T21:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=113420"},"modified":"2021-04-11T14:56:12","modified_gmt":"2021-04-11T21:56:12","slug":"a-general-view-of-the-chinese-funded-project-for-the-port-city-is-pictured-in-colombo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2021\/04\/11\/a-general-view-of-the-chinese-funded-project-for-the-port-city-is-pictured-in-colombo\/","title":{"rendered":"Mrs World 2020 to return her crown after she snatched one off 2021 Mrs Sri Lanka winner"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy The Straits Times<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>COLOMBO (NYTIMES) &#8211; Last year&#8217;s winner of Mrs World, a beauty pageant for married women, said she would return her crown after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/south-asia\/sri-lanka-arrests-mrs-world-over-assault\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she snatched one off the head of the 2021 winner of Mrs Sri Lanka World<\/a>, claiming that she was divorced &#8211; a violation of pageant rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.straitstimes.com.sg\/s3fs-public\/styles\/article_pictrure_780x520_\/public\/articles\/2021\/04\/11\/af_mrsworld_1104.jpg?itok=1J01mbkz&amp;timestamp=1618126945\" alt=\"2020 Mrs World winner Caroline Jurie (left) forcibly removes Mrs Sri Lanka Pushpika De Silva's crown during the Mrs Sri Lanka pageant in Colombo on April 4, 2021.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Pushpika de Silva had just been crowned Mrs Sri Lanka World at a pageant in Colombo&nbsp;last weekend when Caroline Jurie, the 2020 Mrs World winner, took the stage and announced that &#8220;there is a rule that you have to be married and not divorced&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So,&#8221; she said, &#8220;I&#8217;m taking my first step saying that the crown goes to the first runner-up.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jurie, 28, then yanked the crown off Ms de Silva&#8217;s head, pulling her hair in the process, before placing it on the runner-up, who was holding back tears and later gave an acceptance speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms de Silva left the stage as Jurie, the two runners-up and Chula Padmendra, a Sri Lankan model who was also on stage, hugged. Padmendra applauded and raised her fist in the air victoriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mrs World pageant describes itself on Facebook as &#8220;the first beauty pageant in the world for married women, created in 1984&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jurie was crowned Mrs World at the 2020 pageant in Las Vegas, according to the organisation&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms de Silva said in a Facebook post after the episode that she was separated and not divorced. She said she had sustained &#8220;injuries to my skull&#8221; and was pursuing legal action against Jurie &#8220;for the injustice and insult that has taken place&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The police arrested Jurie and Padmendra &#8220;on charges of simple hurt and criminal cause&#8221;, BBC News reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A representative for the Mrs World organisation, which is based in California, according to its Facebook page, referred a request for comment to &#8220;where the incident occurred, in Sri Lanka&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the pageant&#8217;s organisers, Mr Chandimal Jayasinghe, told BBC News: &#8220;We are disappointed.
