PRESS RELEASE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Peradeniya University Agriculture Teachers\u2019\nAssociation (PUATA) hereby express our grave concern and displeasure on the\nbaseless allegations made by Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya as a participant in the\nUrumaya\u201d programme televised live on 14th June 2021 by the Independent\nTelevision Network (ITN). Dr. Padeniya\u2019s comments, as a member representing the\nmedical profession in Sri Lanka and a trade union, was targeted at the\nacademics of the Faculty of Agriculture (FOA), University of Peradeniya (UOP),\nand we, the members of PUATA, consider it as an effort to tarnish the good name\nof the Faculty, which has been the pioneer in University Education in\nAgriculture for over seven decades.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PUATA also considers\nDr. Padeniya\u2019s statements made at the said TV programme, linking the higher\ndegree obtained by the academia of the FOA at UoP and inferring the links to\nMonsanto\u00ae, as a deliberate attempt made to gain cheap popularity on a currently\ndebated policy directive of the Government of Sri Lanka. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are surprised to see\nand listen to the presenter of the said programme stimulating Dr. Padeniya\nfurther on to his whims and fancies. Moreover, Dr. Padeniya made false\nrepresentation regarding the agriculture sector in Sri Lanka in the same\nprogramme misleading the viewers. We are puzzled and saddened to learn that\npeople like Dr. Padeniya, with extremely poor or no knowledge at all of\nscientific agriculture, are at the decision making or advisory positions in the\nGovernment of Sri Lanka in the field of agriculture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We, the membership of\nPUATA, representing the academia of the FOA at UOP, strongly object to the\nstatements made by Dr. Padeniya at the above programme referring to the\nacademia of the FOA at UOP. We will not tolerate such wilful efforts made by\nDr. Padeniya or any other individual or institutions\/organization to bring this\npremier higher educational institute to disrepute by making baseless\nallegations at any cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We, with this, also\nstrongly urge the responsible media entities of the caliber of ITN not to\ntelevise such programmes highlighting individuals with a significant lack of\nintelligence and relevant scientific knowledge of the subject area under\ndiscussion and common sense, providing false information to the policymakers\nand the general public. Furthermore, we wish to reiterate that such undue\npublicity extended to boost individuals’ image and spread unscientific views\nmay lead to policy actions resulting in irreversible negative impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
