{"id":116359,"date":"2021-07-22T13:42:08","date_gmt":"2021-07-22T20:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=116359"},"modified":"2021-07-22T13:42:08","modified_gmt":"2021-07-22T20:42:08","slug":"dawn-butler-thrown-out-of-commons-for-pm-lie-accusation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2021\/07\/22\/dawn-butler-thrown-out-of-commons-for-pm-lie-accusation\/","title":{"rendered":"Dawn Butler thrown out of Commons for PM lie accusation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy BBC News<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p><strong>Labour MP Dawn Butler has been ordered to leave the Commons chamber after she refused to withdraw accusations that Boris Johnson is a liar.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Butler said the prime minister had &#8220;lied to the House and the country over and over again&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under parliamentary rules, MPs are not allowed to accuse each other of lying in the House of Commons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The acting Deputy Speaker asked the MP to withdraw her remarks but Ms Butler refused and was ordered to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-56888298\">Parties demand Commons debate on PM&#8217;s &#8216;inaccuracies&#8217;<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-politics-19636286\">MP thrown out for lie accusation<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-politics-18438723\">Has Bercow &#8216;lies&#8217; ruling overturned tradition?<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident took place during the final debate in the House of Commons before MPs leave Westminster for the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Butler used her speech to attack the prime minister for &#8220;misleading this House&#8221; during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Brent Central MP cited past statements on economic growth, nurses&#8217; bursaries and investment in the NHS as proof of the prime minister&#8217;s dishonesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rules governing behaviour in the Commons state that MPs are not allowed to use abusive language or accuse another MP of either being drunk or a liar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acting Deputy Speaker Judith Cummins interrupted Ms Butler and asked her to &#8220;reflect on her words and perhaps correct the record&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Butler replied: &#8220;At the end of the day, the prime minister has lied to this House time and time again and it&#8217;s funny that we get in trouble in this place for calling out the lie, rather than the person lying.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Cummins again urged the MP to take back her comments but Ms Butler said, &#8220;I have reflected on my words and somebody needs to tell the truth in this House that the prime minister has lied.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Deputy Speaker then ordered Ms Butler to withdraw from the Commons for the rest of the day&#8217;s sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Downing Street has been contacted for a comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy BBC News Labour MP Dawn Butler has been ordered to leave the Commons chamber after she refused to withdraw accusations that Boris Johnson is a liar.
