{"id":116711,"date":"2021-08-02T17:06:33","date_gmt":"2021-08-03T00:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=116711"},"modified":"2021-08-02T17:06:33","modified_gmt":"2021-08-03T00:06:33","slug":"quality-engineering-education-for-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2021\/08\/02\/quality-engineering-education-for-all\/","title":{"rendered":"Quality Engineering Education for ALL"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong data-rich-text-format-boundary=\"true\">Media Statement The Association of Engineering Teachers of the University of Moratuwa <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The Association of Engineering Teachers of\nthe University of Moratuwa (AETUM), possesses a responsibility to address\nissues in the education system and produce skilled engineers with the capacity\nto cater both national and global demand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broadening the access to higher education\nin Engineering is a need for a country like Sri Lanka while assuring equal\naccess to high-quality education and equal opportunities for all.&nbsp; The\naffordability should not be a deciding factor in accessing education\nopportunities.&nbsp; Private Engineering Education would lead to inequality in\neducation as financially abled could only afford to get an engineering degrees\nwhilst students with capacity and passion for engineering having no\nopportunities. Therefore, we strongly believe that in order to maintain the\nsustainability of the Engineering profession and the engineering education upto\nthe required quality and credibility, equal opportunities should be made\navailable for all the students in the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context we, as the Engineering\nTeachers, feel that there is a requirement of a national policy for engineering\neducation to achieve the aspirations, expectations, and requirements of our\nnation.&nbsp; The expansion of the engineering education should be done as a\npart of national policy formulated by all relevant stakeholders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We urge the government to refrain from\nchanging the current education system by amending the Universities Act\nforcefully. Concomitantly, we urge the Government to restructure the existing\nKotelawela Defense University to serve its original and intended special\npurpose without letting the education system towards a militarized environment.\nEngineering graduates who can think and act freely to solve engineering\nproblems following ethical and moral principles are the type of graduates we\nneed who are being produced by the current system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, we urge the Government to take\nsteps to draft an engineering education policy that includes the minimum\nstandards for new Engineering Faculties\/Universities\/Institutions, required\nphysical and human resources, and minimum entry qualifications for Engineering\nEducation as stipulated by the Instituition of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. KTMU Hemapala<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President -AETUM&nbsp; &nbsp;\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Media Statement The Association of Engineering Teachers of the University of Moratuwa The Association of Engineering Teachers of the University of Moratuwa (AETUM), possesses a responsibility to address issues in the education system and produce skilled engineers with the capacity to cater both national and global demand.
