Tamil Genocide \/ Mullivaikal\u00a0 Massacre Remembrance Day In Auckland \u2013\u00a0 Stirring Up Communal Strife In New Zealand\u00a0 Based On A Disproven Allegation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Sri\nLanka Association (USLA) of Wellington and it\u2019s members are both frustrated and\ndistraught at learning of a planned  \nTamil Genocide Remembrance Day\u201d meeting on 18th<\/sup> of May at 6.30pm at\n202 Hillsborough Road, Hillsborough , Auckland. This allegation of Tamil\nGenocide\u201d , during the final weeks of liberation of Sri Lanka from three\ndecades of Tamil Tiger Terror, on the 19th<\/sup> of May 2009 at\nMulivaikal, was  first levelled by the\ninternational funders of the Tigers, within days of their defeat at the hands\nof the Sri Lankan security forces , to discredit the latter.  The allegation was that in these last few\nweeks the civilian casualty rate was of the order of 40 to 120 thousand , disproportionately\n high suggesting directed shooting at\ncivilians by the SL forces and hence justifying the charge of Genocide,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this\nclaim has now been shown  to be clearly\nfalse through a impressive volume of evidence . Most notable among them were\nthe war time dispatches in May 2019,from UK Defense Attache Lt Colonel Anton\nGash from Colombo,  first tabled by Lord\nNaseby in the UK House of Lords in September 2017 and many times thereafter, having\nobtained them with great difficulty using the official information act. The\nheavily redacted 39 dispatches  Lord\nNaseby tabled ,   showed clearly that the civilian casualties\nwere of the order of seven thousand , quite proportional to the scale of the\nfighting. This number was also similar to the estimates of US Defense  attache \nLt Col. Lawrense Smith, estimates of Sir John Holmes the UN resident\nrepresentative in Colombo in May 2019 \nand the findings of the SL Tamil University Teachers census   carried out a few months later.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sir Desmond de\nSilva QC of UK, a former United Nations Chief War Crimes Prosecutor in Sierra\nLeon, providing a legal opinion to respond to these Tiger allegation, following\nexamination of extensive information provided on the conflict  concluded that the great mass of civilian\ndeaths which occurred in the final stages of the war were regrettable but\npermissible collateral damage.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally , it\nis recognised that in war the number of injured would be two to three times of\nthe fatalities. Ten years after the end of the war  those found injured were not anything  like the 120 to 300 thousand that should have\nbeen found. Nor have any sites of burial for the 40 to 120 thousand  allegedly killed , even ten years after the\nevent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The claimed\nsupport for this Tiger  allegation from\nthe UN , their  only significant support,\nwas in fact  not from the UN and the\nbasis of their support was of questionable credibility. It came  from a panel of three experts, all with\nrecent adverse interactions with SL ,appointed by the UNSG against the wishes\nof the UNSC , to advice  UNSG on\naccountability provisions in SL. Going beyond their brief, they indicated  the presence of credible allegations\u201d of\ndisproportionate civilian loss of life, but refused to reveal their sources for\nthirty years, so bringing in to question the credibility of this observation.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite this\nvolume of evidence against Tamil Genocide\u201d ,importing this claim from Toronto\nCanada where this claim is rife will inevitably import also the consequent inter\ncommunal discord and even violence within the Sri Lankan community, that is\ncommonplace there , to hitherto peaceful New Zealand.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This prospect is\nhorrifying to contemplate for  Sri Lankan\nNew Zealanders , especially to those of us who came to New Zealand fleeing\nTiger Terror and have enjoyed decades of peace. This is a flagrant misuse of\nthe democratic freedoms of New Zealand to spread  what are now clearly falsehoods,  with no regard to the discord it would lead\nto. It\u2019s  aim is to avenge the defeat of\nthe Tigers they sustained with funds and propaganda for decades  . <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is for these\nreasons that USLA seek your help and urge \nyou to use the power and resources at your disposal to prevent this\nagenda of Tamil Genocide\u201d being pursued as planned, in NZ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand\nif it is to be a Remembrance of  Tamil\nVictims of the Three Decade Long Conflict\u201d \n, then  we would have no objection\nand would be happy to even support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
