The TNA\nsaid, this is not the end of Tamil Separatist Movement, thought it may be the\nend of LTTE. The Tamil Separatist Movement started long before the LTTE.<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahinda Rajapaksa was the first president to speak in Tamil, which\nno other president had tried to do.<a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a>\nHe spoke in Tamil in Jaffna, the heart of the Tamil Separatist Movement. In\ndoing so, Mahinda Rajapaksa was recognizing Eelam. By their policy of\nappeasement they have strengthened the resolve of Tamil nationalists and they\nhave legitimized the Tamil nationalist agenda, said Chandraprema. <a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a>\nMahinda Rajapaksa\u2019s government was bending over backwards to appease Tamils.<a href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a>\nIn time to come, the heads of state will come to realize that they have made a\nserious mistake in trying to appease the Tamil nationalists, said Arun\nTambimuttu interviewed in 2017. <a href=\"#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tamil Separatist\nMovement bounced back from Eelam war IV as if it was on a trampoline. It became\nmore belligerent than ever soon after the Eelam war ended. <a href=\"#_ftn6\">[6]<\/a>&nbsp; It had much to say about the war and the\ndefeat. The peace won by the war is negative, <a href=\"#_ftn7\">[7]<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp; the cause for which the Tamils fought still\nremains, it said.<a href=\"#_ftn8\">[8]<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tamil\nSeparatist Movement unleashed a variety of accusations against the government\nSri Lanka .They produced a sob story. They spoke of the Jaffna population as \u2018victims\u2019\nwho had suffered in a war. They were not victims at all. They had fully supported\nthe LTTE and were therefore complicit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &nbsp;Tamil Separatist\nMovement &nbsp;spoke of the&nbsp; brutality of the war between LTTE and the\nstate, but did not say that the wars were initiated by&nbsp; the LTTE .The peace won by the war is\nnegative, it said. <a href=\"#_ftn9\">[9]<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp; The Tamils want to know what really happened\nat the end of the Eelam war IV, they wish to know the truth the Tamil\nSeparatist Movement went on. &nbsp;They want\nan independent international inquiry.<a href=\"#_ftn10\">[10]<\/a> They do not trust\nthe local system. <a href=\"#_ftn11\">[11]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;After the war, an international Tamil\nSeparatist&nbsp;&nbsp; organization was created,\nthe Global Tamil Forum with branches all over the word and headquarters in\nLondon. The Global Tami Forum had representatives from different countries\ncoming together to express their support of Eelam.<a href=\"#_ftn12\">[12]<\/a>\nGTF operated at a very high level. It had discussions with USA regarding the\nUNHRC resolution against Sri Lanka.&nbsp; It\nissued formal statements on every possible occasion to keep its profile high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three months\nafter the LTTE was defeated, in 2009, the Sri Lanka campaign for Peace and Justice\nwas created. Its head was Charulata Hogg. It targeted the government&nbsp;&nbsp; on humanitarian and HR fronts. It declared\nits affiliation with Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, International\nCrisis Group, and Reporters sans frontiers. <a href=\"#_ftn13\">[13]<\/a>This\nCampaign wanted the UN to&nbsp;&nbsp; hold Sri\nLanka accountable for war crimes.<a href=\"#_ftn14\">[14]<\/a>\nTamil Youth Organisation (TYO) was continuing to operate from Australia,\nCanada, Switzerland, France and the UK. <a href=\"#_ftn15\">[15]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within Sri\nLanka TNA became the dominant Tamil separatist party.<a href=\"#_ftn16\">[16]<\/a>&nbsp; TNA started to openly drum up support from\nforeign countries for its Eelam. The TNA approached visiting delegations from\nUK, USA, India,&nbsp;&nbsp; Australia, European\nParliament, Norway, Netherlands and Japan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TNA\u2019s&nbsp; discussion with these foreigners covered the\nfull spectrum of Tamil Separatist Movement concerns, such as the national\nquestion,<a href=\"#_ftn17\">[17]<\/a> power sharing<a href=\"#_ftn18\">[18]<\/a> merger of\nNorth and East provinces,<a href=\"#_ftn19\">[19]<\/a> \u2018state\nsponsored colonization\u2019<a href=\"#_ftn20\">[20]<\/a> also &nbsp;the fiction that the&nbsp; Tamils have been living in the north and east\nfrom ancient times, this is their homeland.<a href=\"#_ftn21\">[21]<\/a>&nbsp; TNA said the\nTamil community has the right to live with dignity peacefully without\ndiscrimination and pursue their interests<a href=\"#_ftn22\">[22]<\/a>&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the\nyears 2009-12, have dramatically changed&nbsp;\nthe modus operandi of the&nbsp;\ninternational anti-Sri Lanka campaigns, it is now a professional\noperation conducted by fee based lobby companies in the US with highly\nexperienced lobbyists and strategists, said\nShanaka Jayasekera.<a href=\"#_ftn23\">[23]<\/a> There is a very\nprofessional approach to targeting image of Sri Lanka by professional lobby\ncompanies.<a href=\"#_ftn24\">[24]<\/a>&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dayan\nJayatilleka said in 2009 that the LTTE and Tamil separatist movement will\neasily obtain support internationally. \u2018We are relatively weak and our enemies\nare strong\u2019. Also Eelam movement is more globalised than ever. The struggle between\nSri Lanka and the Tamil separatist movement will continue in the global area,\non an international scale and the country\u2019s future will be greatly influenced,\nif not decisively determined in the international theatre, he said. <a href=\"#_ftn25\">[25]<\/a>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nLTTE network is still active and intact abroad, said analysts. <a href=\"#_ftn26\">[26]<\/a> They will continue their\nproject aimed at dividing Sri Lanka into two like Sudan. The project it will\ncontinue from foreign lands and they will try to create instability and anarchy\nwithin the country, concluded analysts.&nbsp; <a href=\"#_ftn27\">[27]<\/a>It is quite clear that there\nis a concerted intentional conspiracy to destabilize Sri Lanka, &nbsp;which\nis just picking up after the conclusion of the war, said Rohana Wasala. <a href=\"#_ftn28\">[28]<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the agenda before 2009 was Eelam through war, the agenda after\n2009 became Eelam through politics. What the LTTE couldn\u2019t achieve, through\nterrorism and military means, its rump and followers might be able to secure\nwith foreign intervention. That is a reality, a possibility Sri Lanka cannot\nignore, said analysts.<a href=\"#_ftn29\">[29]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rohan\nGunaratne said in 2010 that though the war on the ground in Sri Lanka was won,\nit is going to be a losing battle unless there is a firm effort to counter the\npropaganda war of the LTTE front.<a href=\"#_ftn30\">[30]<\/a> If the government\nfails to counter unsubstantiated war crimes allegations, propagated by interested\nparties, Sri Lanka will continue to be mauled at local political platforms and\nabroad. <a href=\"#_ftn31\">[31]<\/a> In\nfact, Sri Lanka government did not counter the LTTE propaganda abroad\neffectively. <a href=\"#_ftn32\">[32]<\/a> It was not\ndone in a professional manner. <a href=\"#_ftn33\">[33]<\/a>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tamil\nSeparatist Movement continued to go strongly after 2009. In 2015 The Northern\nProvincial Council adopted a resolution calling for an international\ninvestigation.&nbsp; <a href=\"#_ftn34\">[34]<\/a>\nIn 2016 NPC passed a resolution asking for a merger of the North and east.\nThere was a petition in Supreme Court against it.<a href=\"#_ftn35\">[35]<\/a>\nIn 2020 there were plans to facilitate a high profile visit of Rosemary A.\nDiCarlo, UN\u2019s Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs. <a href=\"#_ftn36\">[36]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This separatist\nmomentum is continuing today. In &nbsp;January\n2021 the TNA, TNPF and TMTK wrote to the UN Human Rights Council. (TMTK is C.V.\nWigneswaran\u2019s Thamil Makkal Thesiya Kuttani and TNPF is Gajendrakumar\nPonnambalam\u2019s Tamil National People\u2019s Front\u2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;We, the elected representatives of the Tamil\npeople in Sri Lanka, leaders of Tamil national political parties, members of\nthe Tamil victim communities and Tamil civil society organizations write this\nletter in the lead up to the 46th Session of the United Nations Human Rights\nCouncil (UNHRC) when the situation in Sri Lanka is to be evaluated, the\nstatement said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"#_ftn37\">[37]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri Lanka cannot\nproduce a&nbsp; domestic process that can\ngenuinely deal with accountability in Sri Lanka. <a href=\"#_ftn38\">[38]<\/a>Nor can it be\nachieved by hybrid mechanisms.&nbsp; <a href=\"#_ftn39\">[39]<\/a> This matter\nmust be referred to the International Criminal Court&nbsp; by the UN Security Council and the UN General\nAssembly and UN Secretary General, to inquire into the crime of genocide, war\ncrimes and crimes against humanity, the statement continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of\nthe High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to continue to monitor Sri Lanka\nfor ongoing violations and have an OHCHR field presence in country. Establish\nan evidence gathering mechanism similar to the International Independent Investigatory\nMechanism (IIIM) in relation to Syria established as a subsidiary body of the\nUN General Assembly with a strict time frame of twelve months duration,\nconcluded the statement. <a href=\"#_ftn40\">[40]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2021,\nLTTE flags were displayed in London during a protest. Tamils who were British\ncitizens demonstrated at Parliament Square, demanding justice for those who\nperished during the last phase of the<em> Vanni <\/em>offensive. Some held\nplacards that read \u2018justice delayed is justice denied\u2019 and \u2018Tamil genocide is a\nfact\u2019 as some protesters sang to \u2018free Tamil Eelam.\u2019 <a href=\"#_ftn41\">[41]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tamil\nGuardian quoted a British Tamil demonstrator as saying&nbsp; It has been 12 years since the genocide\nhappened so we\u2019re here to remember those who died and those who gave their\nlives for us. We\u2019re still trying to get the UK government to hold Sri Lanka\naccountable for their war crimes. We\u2019ve been protesting this for years and\nwe\u2019re still here. We\u2019re going to continue doing so.\u201dLater in the day, groups of\nBritish Tamils gathered outside Downing Street where several Tamils were\nengaged in a hunger strike <a href=\"#_ftn42\">[42]<\/a>&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tamil\nSeparatist Movement&nbsp;&nbsp; started all sorts\nof patriotic rallies after the defeat. The first was Pongu Tamil. Pongu Tamil (Tamil\nUprising) is an event held in support of &#8220;Tamils Right to Self-Determination&#8221;\nand &#8220;Tamil Traditional homeland&#8221;. Pongu Tamil was first organized in\nJaffna in January 2001 by students of the Jaffna University.<a href=\"#_ftn43\">[43]<\/a>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around hundred and fifty thousand people crammed the Jaffna Medical\nCollege grounds and its environs for the Pongu Thamil rally in 2003. The Pongu\nThamil flame was lit by the Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University. Buddhist\nnuns, monks and two officials from the Sri Lankan Prime Minister\u2019s office were\namong the special guests. Mr. Saman Athauda, media coordinating secretary to Sri Lanka\u2019s P.\nM was also present among the guests<a href=\"#_ftn44\">[44]<\/a>The\nhead of the LTTE\u2019s women\u2019s wing hoisted the national flag. .<a href=\"#_ftn45\">[45]<\/a>Angry\ncrowds smashed a model of a Sri Lankan armed forces high security zone that was\nput up on the grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the\nlargest gathering of people that Jaffna has seen in more than fifteen years.\nMore than 600 vehicles of all types are still plying the roads bringing in more\npeople said one observer. Massive processions of people from Vadamaradchi,\nThenmaradchi, Jaffna town and suburbs and the islands marched from four points\naround the Jaffna University, converging on the grounds around 3.45 p.m. <a href=\"#_ftn46\">[46]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2003, the\nevent attracted over 150,000 people and has become an annual event in the LTTE\nheld areas of Sri Lanka. In the recent years some members of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sri_Lankan_Tamil_diaspora\">Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora<\/a> have also\npicked up on the notion and it has become an annual event in the countries they\nreside. In 2008, the event was held in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Zealand\">New Zealand<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norway\">Norway<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denmark\">Denmark<\/a>, Italy,\nSouth Africa, France, Australia, England and Canada. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/TamilNet\">Tamilnet<\/a>, , the event\nattracted thousands of people in these countries including over 7,000 in\nFrance, 30,000 in England&nbsp; and over\n75,000 in Canada.
