Sri\nLanka\u2019s Minority Population makes up 36% of Sri Lanka\u2019 total population.\nMuslims account for 9.3% around 1.9million of Sri Lanka\u2019s 21million population.\nThe present proportional representation system has enabled minority leaders to\nact as king-pins plugging themselves into Parliament to prop up a government\nand demanding plum portfolios or threatening to join the opposition. This has\nbeen the modus operandi of all Muslim parties that successive governments have\nhad to align with. We look at the political opportunism in SLMC & its\nleader. What has the party done for Muslims by doing kangaroo jumps every\nparliamentary election?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hakeem\njoined SLMC (Sri Lanka Muslim Congress) in 1988 & became SLMC General\nSecretary from 1992-2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His\nParliamentary career began as a National List MP having aligned to the PA\ngovernment of Chandrika Bandaranaike in 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\nbecame SLMC leader in 2000 after the untimely death of A H M Ashroff but\ncontested under the National Unity Alliance but aligned with PA<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\ncrossed over from PA to UNP in 2001 after getting dismissed by President\nChandrika<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\ncontested from SLMC aligned to UNP in 2004 but crossed over to UPFA in Jan 2007\nthen left UPFA in Dec 2007 but re-entered Parliament joining UNP as a National\nList MP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\ncontinued with UNP in 2010 but crossed to UPFA in November and was made Justice\nMinister. He leaves UPFA in 2014 December crossing over to join the Joint\nOpposition that canvassed for Maithripala Sirisena in January 2015 Presidential\nElections. He contested under SLMC & UNFGG and entered Parliament. Not\ncrossed over as yet!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
