According to media reports, while addressing at the\nSLPPs 5th<\/sup> National Convention, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said the\nSLPP was duty bound to preserve the unity among its coalition allies who had\nfought for the same cause. Recalling the sacrifices made by those who\ncontributed towards the SLPP\u2019s historic victory, the PM said, \u2018\u2019the size of a\npolitical party did not matter, and what really mattered was the goal. These\nparties have been with us through thick and thin. They are neither crutches nor\na cat\u2019s paw of the SLPP. Therefore, all parties must unite, and making that\nhappen is our responsibility.\u201d  While\nadmitting the apparent frustration among the youth and those who voted for the\nSLPP during the last Presidential and Parliamentary elections, PM has stressed\nthe need to be involved in politics among the people similar to how they manage\ngovernment institutions after securing power after the elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the last Presidential election, Presidential candidate Gitabhaya\nRajapaksa received a 6.9 million mandate and, no doubt, majority of those who\nvoted for him must have thought that Gotabhaya is the only answer to their\nmajority of the problems. When we think about how Gotabhaya performed as the\nSecretary of the Ministry of and Urban Development, their expectations are\nreasonable to some extent.  Although\nGotabhaya\u2019s performance in managing government institutions is well aware, his\nstate administration is yet to be seen since no state administration is\ndetached from politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ruling coalition,\nsimilar to all other coalition government we had since independence, consists\nof parliamentarians with different interests. Although Mahinda Rajapaksa has\ndone a wonderful thing during his tenure of office as the President of the\ncountry up to 2015, by keeping all these elements together, probably with the\nintention of achieving political stability as a short term measure, while\ndefeating terrorism, upgrading economy and country\u2019s infra structure, we have witnessed\nsome of its negative effects at the end. Corruptions charges were leveled\nagainst some of his close associates and similar to what we hear even today. We\nremember how one of them departed to USA soon after the 2015 election results\nwere announced, accepting the responsibility for the defeat. There may be leading\nelements in the government who are working with similar sinister agendas even\ntoday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SLPP rebels vow to\nscuttle New Fortress deal were talking about an American Agent and elements abusing\nthe mandate people had given to Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. When talking about how the\nproject has been awarded to a non-tendered company while the tenders submitted\nfor a project are being evaluated, Leader of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, Minister\nof Energy Udaya Gammanpila stated that the present government is engaged in\nmore serious corruption far worse than those of JR, Premadsa , Chandrika and\nRanil which were branded as extremely corrupt eras. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although\nthe above speech of the PM is commendable, it would have been much better, as\nthe leader of the SLPP, if he has taken action to find out who are the main\nculprits, within the party, responsible for making the public unhappy and for\ntreating minor allies of the coalition as crutches or cat\u2019s paws. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were under foreign\npowers for centuries due to the acts of saboteurs and traitors. We have\nwitnessed, during our life time, how powerful are enemies within, when\ndestabilising regimes. If the incumbent government is not taking any action,\nthe public must be aware of these enemies, as a priority, should rally against\nsuch elements in order to protect our nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
