Japan launched the Imphal and Kohima\noperation together with the support of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and the\nIndian National Army in March 1944 to demonstrate to Indian people that it was\nprepared to sacrifice the precious lives of the Japanese soldiers to achieve\nfreedom for India.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the military operation was unsuccessful the\nramifications of the Imphal Operation were not. It set in motion a process\nwithin India after the end of the war in 1945, where the people of India\nrallied around the banner of the INA and it&#8217;s departed leader Netaji Subash\nChandra Bose, through large scale public demonstrations, and mutinies by the\nBritish Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, that forced the British Govt. under\nLabour Prime Minister Clement Atlee to grant Independence to India on August\n15, 1947, Burma on January 04, 1948 and Ceylon on February 04, 1948.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grant of independence to Ceylon was directly linked to\nthe grant of independence to India, which in turn can be traced to Japan&#8217;s\nattack on Pearl Harbour on December 07, 1941.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People of India have not forgotten the role of Japan and the\nblood sacrifices of&nbsp; Japanese soldiers to bring about India&#8217;s\nfreedom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India refused to attend the San Francisco Peace Treaty\nConference in 1951 to discuss and determine the reparations from Japan for war\ndamage caused.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Indian Judge Radhabinod Pal who sat on the International\nMilitary Tribunal at Tokyo gave a dissenting opinion declaring that all the\nJapanese accused were not guilty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-wordpress wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-the-new-york-times\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/08\/31\/world\/asia\/31memo.html\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri Lanka too have a duty to\nhistory to acknowledge the role that people of other Asian countries led by\nJapan played in WW2 and aftermath in ending foreign occupation of Asia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/105069\/Did-Japan-contribute-to-Sri-Lanka-and-India-to-gain-independence-\">https:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/105069\/Did-Japan-contribute-to-Sri-Lanka-and-India-to-gain-independence-<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-wordpress wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-lankaweb-com\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"hSNcMjssOg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2019\/06\/29\/did-japan-contribute-to-sri-lankas-independence\/\">Did Japan contribute to Sri Lanka&#8217;s independence?<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Did Japan contribute to Sri Lanka&#8217;s independence?&#8221; &#8212; LankaWeb.com\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2019\/06\/29\/did-japan-contribute-to-sri-lankas-independence\/embed\/#?secret=PYNWmYUWbc#?secret=hSNcMjssOg\" data-secret=\"hSNcMjssOg\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There was no freedom struggle in\nBritish occupied Ceylon on the scale of the freedom fight in other Asian\ncountries, after the Matale Rebellion in 1848.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Except for Anagarika Dharmapala,\nno one from Sri Lanka is recognized at a global level for defiance against\nWestern Imperialism in the pre &#8211; independence period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Sri Lanka wishes to be\nidentified with Asia in this Asian Century then our narrative on how we won our\nfreedom from British occupation, must be in step with the story of how Asia\nliberated itself with Japan&#8217;s military assistance during WW2, and the National Liberation\nMovements thereafter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It must be integrated into the\nlarger story. It is regretted that it has so far not taken place.
