Sri Lanka wasn\u2019t able to settle the debt through other means as US sanctions prohibit dealings with Iranian banks, but the country said the new arrangement will not violate US or UN sanctions,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tea has been categorized as a food item under humanitarian grounds while none of the black-listed Iranian Banks will be involved in the equation,\u201d said Pathirana, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/economynext.com\/sri-lanka-inks-us251mn-tea-for-oil-debt-deal-with-iran-88995\/\">news site EconomyNext.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The barter agreement also comes as Sri Lanka is undergoing severe financial stress. It\u2019s facing a fall in foreign-exchange reserves against high external debt payments and limited financing inflows,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitchratings.com\/research\/sovereigns\/fitch-downgrades-sri-lanka-long-term-foreign-currency-idr-to-cc-17-12-2021\">Fitch Ratings said last week in downgrading<\/a>&nbsp;Sri Lanka\u2019s sovereign rating to CC from CCC. The downgrade reflects Fitch\u2019s view that Sri Lanka, which is among the world\u2019s top tea producers, has an increased probability of a default event in the coming months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country\u2019s foreign exchange reserves have dropped by roughly $2 billion since August, to $1.6 billion at end of November, or the equivalent to less than one month of current external payments, said Fitch.
