Prime Minister\u2019s Media Unit<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n

Following a\nspecial request by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on behalf of Sri Lankan\nmedical students awaiting to return to China to complete their studies, State\nCouncillor and Foreign Minister WANG Yi immediately instructed the Ambassador\nof China in Sri Lanka to work closely with the Foreign Ministry to facilitate\nthe return of Sri Lankan medical students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The matter was\ndiscussed during the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Rajapaksa and the\nvisiting Foreign Minister at Temple Trees this morning. Currently,\napproximately 1,200 medical students, including 400 final-year students, who\nwere studying at Chinese medical institutions, are waiting to return to China\nto complete their studies. They have been unable to return due to restrictions\nimposed as a result of the pandemic. In response to the Prime Minister\u2019s\nspecial request, Foreign Minister Yi assured that Sri Lankan students will be\ngiven highest priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the\nbilateral discussions between the two delegations, a host of other matters were\nalso discussed, including further support for the vaccine program, attracting\ninvestments to the Port City and the Hambantota Industrial Zone, increasing\ntourism from China to Sri Lanka, increasing Sri Lankan exports to China and\nenhancing cultural cooperation, especially in the area of Buddhist ties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the\ndiscussions, the delegations signed the following agreements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Agreement on Economic and Technical\nCooperation<\/li>
  • Letter of Exchange on the Project of\nSubsidized Housing for Low Income Category in Colombo<\/li>
  • Handover Certificate of the Technical\nCooperation Project for BMICH<\/li>
  • Handover Certificate of the Technical\nCooperation Project for the Kidney Disease Mobile Screening Ambulance Vehicles<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Foreign Minister\nYi is on a one-day visit to Sri Lanka to launch the celebrations marking the\n65th anniversary of Sri Lanka\u2014China bilateral relations. Last year the Central\nBank of Sri Lanka issued a commemorative coin to mark the 65th anniversary as\nwell as the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China.\nA set of the coins were gifted to the visiting Foreign Minister by the Prime\nMinister. Conveying best wishes from the President and Premier of China to\nPrime Minister Rajapaksa, Foreign Minister Yi said, China will continue to do its\nbest to provide all the necessary help and support [to Sri Lanka].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Good morning, Your\nExcellency and welcome once again to Sri Lanka. Your last visit to Sri Lanka\nwas exactly two years ago, and I\u2019m\nhappy to see you return. I believe these regular high-level visits help\nreaffirm our strong and friendly relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This year is an\nimportant year for our two countries. It marks the 65th anniversary of\nestablishing diplomatic relations and 70 years of signing the Rubber-Rice Pact.\nAllow me to also congratulate the Communist Party of China on its 100th\nanniversary. As you know, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued a commemorative\ncoin to mark these important milestones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Excellency, I want\nto thank the Government and the friendly people of China for the generous\nsupport towards fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The consistent supply of the\nSinopharm vaccines made a significant contribution to our successful vaccine\nprogram. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As you know,\nsimilar to many other countries, Sri Lanka\u2019s economy was also\ngreatly impacted by the pandemic. We appreciate China\u2019s assistance towards our\neconomic revival and financial stability. There is still a long way to go in\nestablishing normalcy, but we\u2019re\nconfident that with support from friendly countries like China, we will be able\nto overcome these challenges soon.
