Speaker Park is the first South Korean speaker\nto visit Sri Lanka in 10 years,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Korean Speaker responded positively to\nthe request stating, I\u2019m pleased that young, talented Sri Lankan workers have\ncontributed to income growth of both our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Foreign Ministry, currently,\napproximately 22,000 Sri Lankan migrants are employed in South Korea. In 2019,\nthey collectively remitted approximately $520 million back to the country. The\ncontribution of remittances from the Sri Lankan migrant workers in South Korea\nwas 7.75% of the total foreign remittances, equivalent to 0.62% of Sri Lanka\u2019s\ntotal GDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In year 2019, South Korea allocated 3,600\nemployment opportunities to Sri Lankan migrants. That allocation decreased to\njust 500 in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, approximately 400\nSri Lankans have already secured employment in South Korea and are looking\nforward to traveling. After a lapse of 20 months, the first batch of 33 Sri Lankan\nmigrants arrived in South Korea last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaker Park thanked the Prime Minister for\nsupporting the vaccination of the South Korean community in Sri Lanka and for\nincluding the Korean language as a foreign language in the Advance Level\ncurriculum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sri Lankan delegation also requested\nSouth Korea for support with vocational training programs, noting Sri Lanka\u2019s\nhighly-skilled human resources and a workforce with good IT knowledge.\nResponding positively, Speaker Park said Sri Lanka\u2019s young workforce with good\nEnglish knowledge, together with South Korea\u2019s technological capabilities can\nopen up collaboration possibilities in the areas of education and vocational\ntraining. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other areas of discussion, Prime Minister\nRajapaksa requested South Korea to encourage more Korean investments in Sri\nLanka, pointing out that, at one time, South Korea was among the countries that\nhad the most investments in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaker Park also suggested that the two\ncountries explore cooperation in the areas of climate change and renewable\nenergy resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Sri Lanka and South Korea are\ncelebrating 45 years of establishing diplomatic relations.
