{"id":123478,"date":"2022-03-14T05:29:01","date_gmt":"2022-03-14T12:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=123478"},"modified":"2022-03-14T05:29:01","modified_gmt":"2022-03-14T12:29:01","slug":"moscow-and-kiev-may-soon-come-to-agreement-russian-negotiator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2022\/03\/14\/moscow-and-kiev-may-soon-come-to-agreement-russian-negotiator\/","title":{"rendered":"Moscow and Kiev may soon come to agreement \u2013 Russian negotiator"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy RT<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Ukraine said Russia was seeing the situation much more adequately\u201d than before<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2022.03\/xxs\/622e121985f540304964b089.jpg\" alt=\"Moscow and Kiev may soon come to agreement \u2013 Russian negotiator\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a9&nbsp;Getty Images \/&nbsp;EA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A member of the Russian negotiating team, Leonid Slutsky, has said he believes the <em>significant progress<\/em>\u201d he has observed in talks between Moscow and Kiev might soon lead the two sides in the conflict to sign an agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to RT Arabic on Sunday, Slutsky \u2013 who also chairs the State Duma\u2019s Committee on International Affairs \u2013 said, <em>If we compare the positions of both delegations at the talks, at the very beginning and today, we see significant progress.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I am happy to report that, according to my personal expectations, in the next few days, this progress may develop into a joint position of the delegations and into documents to sign.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slutsky stressed that signing such documents would be a matter of <em>paramount importance,<\/em>\u201d as it would provide a basis for de-escalation and for <em>saving many people who are dying today.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia has consistently accused Ukrainian <em>nationalists<\/em>\u201d of using civilians as cover and of preventing their evacuation through humanitarian corridors. Slutsky described these alleged actions as <em>monstrous<\/em>\u201d in their <em>cynicism<\/em>,\u201d but said the crisis would be addressed <em>in the very near future.<\/em>\u201d Kiev has consistently denied it has obstructed the evacuation, and blamed Russian shelling for preventing the safe passage of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ukraine has nonetheless apparently witnessed some progress in the negotiations, too. Presidential aide Mikhail Podolyak said in an interview with the Russian newspaper Kommersant that the two sides were approaching a compromise. He opined that the Russian side was <em>already seeing things much more adequately<\/em>,\u201d but noted that it would likely be some time before it <em>fully, 100%, understands the situation it has got into.<\/em>\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/russia\/551807-putin-zelensky-ukraine-turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<\/strong>Turkey reveals Putin\u2019s stance on meeting Zelensky<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Podolyak said he sees any agreement between Kiev and Moscow as being in the form of a <em>multi-component<\/em>\u201d document. It should include provisions on the termination of the war, the terms and time schedule of the withdrawal of the Russian forces, the guaranteed terms of the peace agreement, and a detailed description of compensation mechanisms, he stressed, as recovery efforts would likely amount to <em>billions of dollars.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moscow attacked its neighbor in late February, following a seven-year standoff over Ukraine\u2019s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, and Russia\u2019s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German- and French-brokered protocols had been designed to regularize the status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc.
