A case report detailing the freak accident was published in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2210261222005776#!\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Journal of Surgery Case Reports.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 60-year-old unnamed patient had reported to the coastal District General Hospital of Sri Lanka, after experiencing three days of abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation and a distended belly, per the report.<\/p>\n<p>Suspecting he was going into septic shock, medics rushed the man to intensive care, where scans revealed that his abdomen was filling with fluid. This symptom suggested that his kidneys had stopped working \u2014 a possible sign of sepsis, where the body\u2019s immune system attacks its own organs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-slideshow\" discovered was caused by an 0.8-inch-long fishbone. However, the farmer didn\u2019t recall ingesting the 2-centimeter shard,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-11230255\/Farmer-61-dies-accidentally-swallowing-2cm-long-fish-bone.html?ns_mchannel=rss&amp;ns_campaign=1490&amp;ito=1490\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Daily Mail reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the seemingly innocuous bone fragment had reportedly perforated his bowel, causing fecal matter to seep out and infect his abdominal wall. As a result, the intestine ballooned in size while yellow pus accumulated around the hole.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--related-post\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"story story--i-flex story--i-flex-none-lg\">\n<div class=\"story__text\">\n<h3 class=\"postid-21600089 story__headline headline headline--xs inline-module--related-post__headline\"><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>In an attempt to save the patient, doctors sliced a 3.9-inch (10 cm) segment of the intestine and drained the perforation with the aim of reattaching the healthy bowel after the infection was eradicated. Despite their efforts, the patient passed away following cardiac arrest\u201d just eight hours after his admission to the emergency room, per the report.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, fish bones are the leading cause of gastrointestinal perforations,\u201d the study authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In regions where fish is a staple food, fish bones are not uncommon culprits of FBs [ingested foreign bodies],\u201d the case report states.
