{"id":130854,"date":"2022-12-23T16:59:18","date_gmt":"2022-12-23T23:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=130854"},"modified":"2022-12-23T16:59:18","modified_gmt":"2022-12-23T23:59:18","slug":"sri-lankan-partners-open-world-first-green-town-development-creates-new-opportunities-for-plymouth-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2022\/12\/23\/sri-lankan-partners-open-world-first-green-town-development-creates-new-opportunities-for-plymouth-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lankan partners open world-first green town-Development creates new opportunities for Plymouth students"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Mr Andrew Merrington Senior Media &amp; Communications Officer University of Plymouth<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>One of the University\u2019s closest academic partners, the National School of Business Management (NSBM) in Sri Lanka, has opened a new \u2018green university town\u2019 that will accommodate hugely increased numbers of students \u2013 including those from Plymouth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state-of-the-art development in Pitipana, Homagama, covers 26 acres, and will house 30,000 undergraduates across business, computing and engineering degrees \u2013 a near sixfold increase from current levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Built to the highest levels of sustainability, the Rs 10.2 billion (approx. \u00a356 million) town includes cutting edge academic facilities, one of the biggest libraries in the country, leisure and sporting centres and retail outlets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Plymouth is one of the main academic partners for NSBM, and oversees the delivery of a number of degrees covering business, computing, finance, accounting, marketing, tourism and hospitality, shipping and business communications. It is a collaboration that involves a \u2018flying faculty\u2019 of academics travelling out to Asia to deliver teaching to the final year cohort, who make up a proportion of the 1,500 Plymouth students currently registered there. Students from Plymouth and Sri Lanka also take advantage of reciprocal international study opportunities at the respective institutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the University&#8217;s leadership team, including Professor Simon Payne, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Academic Partnerships, were invited to the launch alongside Sri Lankan President, His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, and the country\u2019s Prime Minister, Hon Ranil Wickramasinghe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Judith Petts, CBE, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Plymouth, said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Our partnership with the National School of Business Management is flourishing and we\u2019re proud to be actively delivering teaching and learning to students in Sri Lanka and creating new pathways into higher education.
