New Delhi: <\/strong>Indian rupee is edging closer to becoming an international currency with more and more countries working to de-dollarise global trade. Several nations have expressed interest in facilitating international trade in INR and to make the process smooth, India\u2019s central bank \u2013 RBI- has given approval for opening 60 special rupee vostro accounts in 18 countries including Russia and Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat Karad informed parliament that as per records, India\u2019s central bank \u2013 Reserve Bank of India (RBI) \u2013 had granted approval to domestic and foreign AD (Authorised Dealer) banks in 60 cases for opening SRVAs of banks from 18 nations\u201d for settling payments in Indian rupees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister further said, out of the 18 countries, Russia has been vocal in facilitating trade in local currency for the overall process of de-dollarisation\u201d. He went on to say that India, however, has been supporting the idea of trade in local currency majorly to boost exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4  \u2013 Botswana<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5  \u2013 Fiji<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6  \u2013 Germany<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7  \u2013 Guyana<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8  \u2013 Israel<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9  \u2013 Kenya<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 \u2013 Malaysia<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 \u2013 Mauritius<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12 \u2013 Myanmar<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13 \u2013 New Zealand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14 \u2013 Oman<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15 \u2013 Seychelles<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The numbers clearly indicate a significant progress in the development of mechanism to settle international trade in Indian rupees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Special Rupee Vostro Account or SRVA?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process of SRVAs started last year in the month of July when the RBI issued detailed guidelines on cross-border trade transactions in the Indian rupees (INR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been decided to put in place an additional arrangement for invoicing, payment, and settlement of exports\/imports in INR,\u201d the India\u2019s central bank said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To settle trade as per the new mechanism, authorised banks in India need to open and maintain SRVAs of the partner trading country\u2019s banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These accounts keep the foreign entity\u2019s holding in the Indian bank in INR. When an Indian importer make a payment to a foreign trader in rupees, the amount gets credited to this vostro account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, when an Indian exporter has to be paid for goods and services in rupees, amount from this vostro account will be deducted and credited to the exporter\u2019s regular account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SRVAs holders are allowed to invest surplus balance in Indian government securities. This facility is being provided by the RBI to help popularise the new arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian importers undertaking imports through this mechanism shall make payment in INR (Indian Rupee), which shall be credited into the special vostro account of the correspondent bank of the partner country, against the invoices for the supply of goods or services from the overseas seller\/supplier,\u201d the Indian central bank had said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India has been trying to promote the use of INR for trade settlement with other countries after the West and European nations imposed sanctions following the launch special military operation\u201d by Russian President Vladimir Putin against Ukraine on 24 February, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
