{"id":134645,"date":"2023-05-28T16:08:49","date_gmt":"2023-05-28T23:08:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=134645"},"modified":"2023-05-28T16:08:49","modified_gmt":"2023-05-28T23:08:49","slug":"president-says-sri-lanka-will-apply-for-rcep-membership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2023\/05\/28\/president-says-sri-lanka-will-apply-for-rcep-membership\/","title":{"rendered":"President says Sri Lanka will apply for RCEP membership"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy The Daily Mirror<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p><strong>Says with RCEP Sri Lanka aims to achieve higher level of economic liberalisation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bmkltsly13vb.compat.objectstorage.ap-singapore-1.oraclecloud.com\/cdn.sg.dailymirror.lk\/assets\/uploads\/image_c106afb55a.jpg\"><strong>Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing the Nikkei Forum<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In an effort to become more integrated in global trade, Sri Lanka will apply for membership to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By entering into a free trade agreement with the Asia Pacific nations, the island nation aims to achieve a higher level of economic liberalisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wickremesinghe made the announcement in Tokyo, Japan this week while addressing the \u2018Nikkei Forum: Future of Asia\u2019 where he shared the island nation\u2019s approach to the Indian Ocean and Asia-Pacific regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the RCEP, Sri Lanka will be able to reap the benefits of entering into an agreement with 10 ASEAN countries and six other countries in the Asia Pacific region.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RCEP member countries are Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri Lanka will be able to boost trade and investment in the region as the RCEP is the world\u2019s largest FTA in terms of GDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Sri Lanka is committed to multi layered connectivity in the Indo-Pacific. Furthermore, we also support Prime Minister Kishida\u2019s Principles for Peace and Rules for Prosperity,\u201d he told the forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Wickremesinghe went on to point out that Sri Lanka welcomes the G7s announcement that they are prepared to build a stable and constructive relationship with China for which Japan pledged its commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;We appreciate this cooperative approach of Japan and give it our full support. It is crucial for the emergence of a peaceful and prosperous Asian region.
