{"id":135739,"date":"2023-07-19T16:48:57","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T23:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=135739"},"modified":"2023-07-19T16:48:57","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T23:48:57","slug":"unsolicited-short-messages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2023\/07\/19\/unsolicited-short-messages\/","title":{"rendered":"Unsolicited Short Messages"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>Sasanka De Silva Pannipitiya<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>I believe I&#8217;m alone in receiving unsolicited electronic mail and text communications often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite internet service providers&#8217; best efforts to keep spammers out of their customers&#8217; accounts, some unscrupulous people manage to slip through the cracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this basis, internet service providers&#8217; efforts should be lauded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the same point, despite the users&#8217; protests and dismay, mobile telephone service providers use the facility to increase income in their coffers while being a pain to the customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the authorities&#8217; failure to take steps to prevent subscribers from receiving unsolicited short messages is perplexing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m sure many people, like me, keep their phones on 24 hours a day, seven days a week for numerous reasons, but not necessarily to get unsolicited texts at an obscene hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, I believe that the government must investigate this matter thoroughly to find a solution to the problem of mobile phone service companies spamming their clients without their consent while profiting from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One reasonable solution to this problem would be to require mobile phone service providers to share their profits with their consumers, as many social media companies do these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each time an If an unwanted short message is received, his or her account will be credited with a particular amount of credit, either based on the number of characters in the message or a flat but reasonable credit amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many other parts of the world already have such regulatory structures in place, so why not Sri Lanka, too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sasanka De Silva<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pannipitiya.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sasanka De Silva Pannipitiya I believe I&#8217;m alone in receiving unsolicited electronic mail and text communications often.
