{"id":137856,"date":"2023-10-23T16:00:11","date_gmt":"2023-10-23T23:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=137856"},"modified":"2023-10-23T16:00:11","modified_gmt":"2023-10-23T23:00:11","slug":"sri-lanka-inflation-rate-eases-to-0-8-in-sept-vs-2-1-in-aug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2023\/10\/23\/sri-lanka-inflation-rate-eases-to-0-8-in-sept-vs-2-1-in-aug\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka inflation rate eases to 0.8% in Sept vs 2.1% in Aug"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Reuters<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>COLOMBO, Oct 23 (Reuters) &#8211; Sri Lanka&#8217;s consumer price inflation rate eased to 0.8% year-on-year in September from 2.1% in August, the statistics department said on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Consumer Price Index&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/quote\/LKNCPI=ECI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(LKNCPI=ECI)<\/a>&nbsp;captures broader retail price inflation and is released with a lag of 21 days every month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food prices fell 5.2% in September after declining 5.4% in August, from a year earlier, the Department of Census and Statistics said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prices for non-food items, however, climbed 5.9% in September after rising 9% year-on-year in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri Lanka experienced record high inflation after its economy was pummelled by the worst financial crisis in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But since June, its inflation has come down sharply, partly due to the statistical base effect, but also helped by a stronger rupee currency, and improved harvests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri Lanka raised power prices for households by 18% last week but the increase is unlikely to significantly push up inflation, analysts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advertisement \u00b7 Scroll to continue<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We expect inflation to end the year at about 5%.
