{"id":138094,"date":"2023-11-06T18:01:23","date_gmt":"2023-11-07T01:01:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=138094"},"modified":"2023-11-06T18:01:23","modified_gmt":"2023-11-07T01:01:23","slug":"sri-lankas-angelo-mathews-becomes-first-player-to-be-timed-out-in-international-cricket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2023\/11\/06\/sri-lankas-angelo-mathews-becomes-first-player-to-be-timed-out-in-international-cricket\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka&#8217;s Angelo Mathews becomes first player to be &#8216;timed out&#8217; in international cricket"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy Sky News<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The seldom-used law means cricketers coming to the crease to bat must be ready to face their first ball within a set time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Sri Lankan batter has become the first player in international cricket to be &#8216;timed out&#8217; in a controversial moment in the World Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angelo Mathews was given out by the on-field umpires during his side&#8217;s clash with rivals&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/bangladesh-6241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Bangladesh&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a>in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/delhi-7263\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Delhi<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;after he was not ready to face his first delivery within the required two minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 35-year-old all-rounder was standing at the crease, but to the side of his wicket, and appeared unhappy with the strap on his helmet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for his wicket, and Mathews was subsequently given his marching orders in a remarkable moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Shakib choosing not to withdraw his appeal, a fuming Mathews was dismissed, chucking his helmet to the floor in rage after leaving the pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mathews appeared to tell Shakib that the delay only happened because of his helmet breaking, but the Bangladesh skipper would not change his mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident has sparked a debate about the seldom-used law &#8211; which has never previously been enforced in international cricket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has only been used seven times in first-class cricket &#8211; including in 2002 when a batter was &#8216;timed out&#8217; because he was still on a flight from the West Indies when he was due out to the crease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/23\/11\/768x432\/skynews-angelo-mathews-sri-lankan_6350584.jpg?20231106132441\" alt=\"Cricket - ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 - Bangladesh v Sri Lanka - Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, India - November 6, 2023 Sri Lanka&#39;s Angelo Mathews walks after losing his wicket due to time out REUTERS\/Anushree Fadnavis\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image:Sri Lanka&#8217;s Angelo Mathews walks after losing his wicket<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/sri-lanka-6664\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sri Lanka&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Charith Asalanka said after his side&#8217;s innings that he felt Mathews&#8217;s dismissal was &#8220;not good for the spirit of cricket&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>World Cup commentator and former Pakistan captain, Waqar, Younis, said: &#8220;I didn&#8217;t enjoy what I saw &#8211; I always believe in the spirit of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Yes, within the laws of the game, he may be out, but I didn&#8217;t like it in terms of the spirit of the game. The appeal and whole drama, I thought it was a bit too much for my liking.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramiz Raja, another World Cup commentator and former Pakistan captain, said: &#8220;To a certain degree, it is an onus on cricketers to learn the rules and understand the spirit of the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Most of us don&#8217;t, but the umpires were on top of the situation. It was a tough call to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;ve got back the law here and be more understanding of what you&#8217;re trying to do and what the law is.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Laws of Cricket &#8211; the rules of cricket worldwide &#8211; are maintained by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in London &#8211; the one-time governing body for the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the laws, there are 11 ways to get out in cricket, the most common of which are: caught, bowled, given leg before wicket (lbw), run out or stumped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are six other &#8211; much more uncommon &#8211; ways for batters to be dismissed, including being &#8220;timed out&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The others are:<br>\u2022 Obstructing the field<br>\u2022 Hit own wicket<br>\u2022 Handling the ball<br>\u2022 Retired out<br>\u2022 Hitting the ball twice<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MCC Laws say a batter must be ready to face the first delivery within three minutes &#8211; though the playing conditions for this year&#8217;s Cricket World Cup stipulate that it is two minutes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy Sky News The seldom-used law means cricketers coming to the crease to bat must be ready to face their first ball within a set time.
