{"id":138335,"date":"2023-11-17T16:11:50","date_gmt":"2023-11-17T23:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=138335"},"modified":"2023-11-17T16:11:50","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T23:11:50","slug":"cope-meetings-suspended-until-further-notice-speaker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2023\/11\/17\/cope-meetings-suspended-until-further-notice-speaker\/","title":{"rendered":"COPE meetings suspended until further notice: Speaker"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong data-rich-text-format-boundary=\"true\">By Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera <\/strong><\/em><em>Courtesy The Daily Mirror<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bmkltsly13vb.compat.objectstorage.ap-singapore-1.oraclecloud.com\/cdn.sg.dailymirror.lk\/assets\/uploads\/image_3d715e396e.jpg\">PARLIAMENT (Daily Mirror) &#8211; The Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) will not be convened until issues pertaining to its chairman is resolved, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Speaker&#8217;s announcement came after opposition MPs requested him to remove COPE Chairman Prof. Ranjith Bandara from his post.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;COPE members should resolve the issue pertaining to Professor Bandara as per the Standing Orders,&#8221; the Speaker said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The COPE meeting scheduled for 1 p.m. today was also cancelled, the speaker announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said a report submitted by the Sri Lanka Audit Services Association revealed that the COPE chairman had failed in his duty by refraining from issuing recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has also been found that the Colombo Business School, headed by Professor Bandara, has reached a business deal with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), Premadasa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National Peoples Power (NPP) MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake also requested the Speaker to remove Professor Bandara from his post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Professor Bandara should be kept away from at least the probe into Sri Lankan cricket,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/rtb2UtJSohw\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera Courtesy The Daily Mirror PARLIAMENT (Daily Mirror) &#8211; The Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) will not be convened until issues pertaining to its chairman is resolved, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced today.
