{"id":140166,"date":"2024-02-02T16:41:51","date_gmt":"2024-02-02T23:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=140166"},"modified":"2024-02-02T16:42:22","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T23:42:22","slug":"fta-with-thailand-to-bring-range-of-goods-to-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2024\/02\/02\/fta-with-thailand-to-bring-range-of-goods-to-sri-lanka\/","title":{"rendered":"FTA with Thailand to bring a range of goods to Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy The Daily Mirror<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Thailand, Feb. 02 (Bangkok Post) The Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is expected to be signed between Thailand and Sri Lanka this week, will benefit Thailand&#8217;s exports of automotive parts, textiles, electrical appliances, machinery, steel products, paper, processed food and animal feed, Thai media reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thailand and Sri Lanka will sign a free trade agreement (FTA) this week during Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin&#8217;s trip to tSri Lanka, said spokesman Chai Watcharonke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Srettha has been invited by Sri Lankan Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe as a guest of honour for Sri Lanka&#8217;s Independence Day celebrations from tomorrow until Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The upcoming FTA will be Thailand&#8217;s 15th contract of its kind and the first since Mr Srettha took the premiership last year,&nbsp;the Bangkok Post reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contract aims to bring Thai goods to new markets in South Asia by accelerating the opening of gateways for trade and investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expanding Thai trade to newer territories while sustaining existing markets is part of the government&#8217;s proactive diplomatic policy, said Mr Chai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Sri Lanka is a small country of just 22 million people, it is an interesting market due to its geographical location in the Indian Ocean, which is a strategic point for shipping, according to the Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DTN revealed that the overall trade value between Thailand and Sri Lanka from January to October last year had jumped to US$320.37 million (11.3 billion baht).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new FTA is expected to benefit Thailand&#8217;s exports of automotive parts, textiles, electrical appliances, machinery, steel products, paper, processed food and animal feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thailand hopes to conclude an FTA with the European Union next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy The Daily Mirror Thailand, Feb. 02 (Bangkok Post) The Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is expected to be signed between Thailand and Sri Lanka this week, will benefit Thailand&#8217;s exports of automotive parts, textiles, electrical appliances, machinery, steel products, paper, processed food and animal feed, Thai media reported.
